- Rollic, on 07/09/2009, -1/+334CNN has gone crazy in terms of their coverage. If E wants to cover it nonstop, fine. But you're supposed to be a NEWS station, CNN.
- Bukowsky, on 07/09/2009, -8/+292I understand that MJ is an icon to the music world, and proper respect should be paid to him... But when the media completely forgets about a revolution going on in Iran, the whole Gov. Sanford drama, Sarah Palin quitting.. and other REAL news, then yes, MJ's death was overplayed.
- MMusick, on 07/09/2009, -22/+284It was overplayed in the first hour after his death.
- drachemorder, on 07/09/2009, -4/+15964%? That's ALL?
- philliesphan026, on 07/09/2009, -6/+148Michael Jackson died?
- pathouston22, on 07/09/2009, -3/+109Hey, Michael Jackson is a hero. He single handedly ended the election crisis in Iran!
- DiggyWiggy, on 07/09/2009, -1/+90In other news, 97% of Americans are all like, "Cap'n Trade? I prefer Cap'n Crunch."
- MikeonTV, on 07/09/2009, -32/+119Michael Jackson was overplayed when he was alive
- compson13, on 07/09/2009, -3/+80how do we have figures like this, "64 percent deemed media attention to the 50-year-old pop superstar excessive, 29 percent thought it was appropriate and only 3 percent thought there was not enough coverage." regarding a pop star? yes, there's been too much media attention.
- noletrain, on 07/09/2009, -5/+75Anything to get us to forget about the economy. Grrrr.
- Turkman182, on 07/09/2009, -0/+65I'm going to answer yes to this headline. I'm sorry he died, but I've heard enough about him over the past two weeks.
- GreenMushroom16, on 07/09/2009, -5/+6099.7% of diggers believe that the words "Micheal Jackson", "King of Pop" and "Freaky white man" should be temporarily banned from this web-site.
- dbalaski, on 07/09/2009, -2/+56I'm surprised the number was that low
They need to read the comic "When a Famous Person Dies"
http://picturesforsadchildren.com/blog/famous.png
That comic pretty much summed up the first week. - mockupscaledown, on 07/09/2009, -5/+44It should have been:
"In other news, pop star Michael Jackson died today, he was 50. Now over to Rick in sports." - whatthefu, on 07/09/2009, -0/+38Cable news stations are forced to go for ratings. That is their flaw, and that is why they suck.
- jsffive, on 07/09/2009, -1/+28Michael Jackson died FOURTEEN DAYS AGO... and there are STILL news reports on CNN's web site.
But no, I don't think they've over played it...
/s - eastwood24, on 07/09/2009, -1/+26Yah, it was sad when the economy died too. RIP economy.
- CobraClutch, on 07/09/2009, -1/+26There was too much media coverage about MJ. Here, have more.
Sincerely,
adweek.com - dty2010, on 07/09/2009, -0/+24At least 3% were trolling.
- d3dm, on 07/09/2009, -0/+24I prefer Cap'n Morgan.
- Rudegar, on 07/09/2009, -0/+23many diggers fit the freaky white man bill too though
- hydroponik, on 07/09/2009, -3/+26The coverage was ridiculous, I bet half of the people prior to his death could give two ***** about him, then he dies and everybody gets all crazy.
- SigmaDraconis, on 07/09/2009, -1/+20CNN hasn't been a News station for more than a while now.
- kylere, on 07/09/2009, -2/+21One third of Americans are morons? Wow, we are better off than I thought!
- SaladCactusKing, on 07/09/2009, -6/+2236 percent of Americans should hang themselves.
- mparker21311, on 07/09/2009, -2/+18It's all tabloid news.
Internet news ftw. - fjs7, on 07/09/2009, -6/+22This confirms my theory that 32% of the US population are idiots.
- chadsmith729, on 07/09/2009, -2/+16TWEET: ZOMG! KING OF POP IS DEAD! TMZ SAID SO!
- cubee, on 07/10/2009, -2/+16I dont think i give a ***** about Sarah Palin quitting.
- EnnuiStudent, on 07/09/2009, -1/+15I agree...
Pay no attention to the 170 or so rioters that died in China. The king of pop is worth way more than that... - kjones555, on 07/10/2009, -1/+15No way...
EVERYBODY PANIC!!!! - kemp34, on 07/09/2009, -5/+18Win.
- dhoneywell, on 07/09/2009, -0/+13I bet that would only make the news for a day or two.
- petebot, on 07/09/2009, -0/+12I don't see the problem with that...it's got electrolytes.
- rock774, on 07/09/2009, -1/+13And invented Jesus Juice
- chadsmith729, on 07/09/2009, -0/+12Ah I came to post that exact comic.
"Next up, Alfred Wilson who thought he saw {famous person} riding on the bus in London when he was 12. Stay tuned!" - adc86, on 07/09/2009, -1/+12The problem with the statistic is that "thought it was excessive" and "ate it up" are two different issues.
- doshindude, on 07/10/2009, -0/+11I'm pissed at the lack of Billy Mays coverage.
- kemp34, on 07/09/2009, -1/+12Not to mention doing everything possible to ignore the righteous heat being placed on the Federal Reserve with HR1207...
- VigRoco, on 07/09/2009, -0/+11I am definitely a part of the 64%. Dugg.
......wait a minute....I see what you are trying to do here... - DVmaker, on 07/09/2009, -1/+11I'll file this under "Who cares." It's over now.
- spritom, on 07/09/2009, -0/+10Poor Kim Jong Il's over in the other corner of the world jumping up and down screaming "Hey! What about me?!"
- vrlillis, on 07/09/2009, -0/+9Yeah, all the sudden Iran isn't important anymore.
- tza999, on 07/09/2009, -1/+10Now are you talking about life-time as a whole, or in the past decade and a half when he as considered a freak, or the two decades before that where he was considered an icon?
- skinny01, on 07/09/2009, -5/+14You guys must be really young. You don't have the type of celebrities anymore where whole cities would pretty much get locked down when they did concerts like it was with MJ. He was pretty much THE most famous person in the world so I would imagine the networks would give a lot of coverage. He was more popular and known than most presidents. I knew when I was young that when MJ died it would be in the news on the level of a world leader being assassinated.
You guys don't have pop icons like that who HAD to become reclusive and move to an isolated property because they absolutely could not step foot outside without causing a riot, ever. Once news leaked out that MJ was going to come to town for a concert in his day people would start lining up. All of your icons today are just like some dudes you met at a bar somewhere. If you weren't of age during his prime, you don't know what star-power is. He used to get special meetings with world leaders to discuss politics, etc...and the politicians were the ones excited to be meeting him. Nobody's inviting Britney or the Dave Mathews dudes to speak in front of any world leaders for their thoughts on stuff.
The guy was huge beyond what you know is possible for a musician to be, multi-cultural, multi-continental, and multi-generational huge. A superstar to kids, parents and grandparents at once, and short of a religious leader, definitely the most popular person in the world. It's not a surprise to anyone my age that it's getting this much coverage. And I bet even more once they get the autopsy report out. - papashawn, on 07/09/2009, -0/+964% of the media stories were talking about how it's getting too much media coverage.
the irony... - RoflCoptah, on 07/09/2009, -4/+12the man was legendary, but this was way too overplayed. Media attention should have diverted towards the Iran conflict and the Honduras situtation
- spritom, on 07/09/2009, -0/+8And another 4% are imbeciles?
- NYankee2003, on 07/09/2009, -3/+11in other news, 36% of Americans are retarded.
