- jasonsalas, on 03/27/2008, -2/+43...and MySpace users need to work on their design skills.
- FredFredrickson, on 03/27/2008, -1/+16They need to have those skills before they can work on them. :P

- Duositex, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Office Space quote.
- bowe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1And what about their nunchuck skills, or computer hacking skills?
- ltchimpo, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Great story. No matter what happens to our economy, we will always be creatures of curiosity and create new technologies that will 100% of the time always see us out of a recession.... less we go extinct.
- Mootabolife, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2You're absolutely right. They've even found a way to sell battered women shelters online now. But that alone might make us go extinct.
- Ub3rL33ch, on 03/27/2008, -15/+8***** Myspace, I hope that piece of ***** and all it's clones die. Too bad that is just wishful thinking, too many tards out there love that kind of stupid *****.
- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -3/+7you obviously have no friends.
Facebook is great for keeping in touch with people i used to know and lost contact with. Uni friends, Old work chums etc...- LightSpeed4, on 03/27/2008, -5/+3facebook is, myspace isn't. myspace is just a big page of ads for news corp
- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1note he said 'and all it's clones die'
- fuze44, on 03/27/2008, -1/+0Facebook isn't a MySpace clone. I wish I could say it was the MySpace killer, though.
I hate MySpace.
- fuze44, on 03/27/2008, -1/+0Facebook isn't a MySpace clone. I wish I could say it was the MySpace killer, though.
- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1note he said 'and all it's clones die'
- Ub3rL33ch, on 03/27/2008, -2/+1You obviously only have internet friends.
I have enough friends outside in the real world ... ever heard of it?- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics. Even if you win you're still a retard.
- Ub3rL33ch, on 03/27/2008, -3/+1It's ok man, no need to call yourself a retard now, it's not THAT serious.
- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -3/+3Arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics. Even if you win you're still a retard.

- CAPITALLETTERS, on 03/27/2008, -1/+4Sorry Ub3rL33ch, Digg is now full of myspacetards.
- WhatInThe42o, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Strip the idiotic tone out of your comment, and I agree with you. MySpace is a great place to be aggravated by idiots, and hounded by people who, no matter how hard you try, just won't get the hint that you'd rather they ***** off.
- Ub3rL33ch, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1In other words ... idiots.
- TurboTuna, on 03/27/2008, -3/+7you obviously have no friends.
- DrZocktahedron, on 03/27/2008, -0/+26Imagine how many kids would be pissed if they cant display their mirror and top view shots on myspace.
- pikon, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0But we'd all benefit from not being surprised by the dreaded MySpace Angles.
- plizard, on 03/27/2008, -2/+22i need to make money fast... ***** myspace
- NathanielJ, on 03/27/2008, -0/+4"Lookery, an ad network specializing in social media, offers display ads on MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo for only 13 cents per thousand times the ad is served (CPM); Yahoo's average CPM is estimated at $13."
Uh, source? $13 CPM for display ads is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard. $13 CPM for VIDEO ads maybe, but not for banner ads like you see on social networking sites or for anything like Yahoo Ads.- hpymondays, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1it looks like it's a mistake. Nobody pays $13 CPM for text/image ads.
- pcpimpster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Your mistaken actually.

- DavidJAugustyn, on 03/27/2008, -2/+2Within the past six months, Facebook has acquired the right to access our profile information (Hobbies, Interests, Music) and give that information to 3rd parties such as Google to allow for targetted ads to each user.
This means more money for Facebook and 3rd-party advertisers, and less privacy for us =[- blah247, on 03/27/2008, -0/+11If you want privacy, don't put your personal information on the internet.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2Myspace isn't giving me privacy...... oh man, that's comical. Cheese cake doesn't help you lose weight either.... btw
- coronavip, on 03/27/2008, -9/+3What's the R-word?

- humboldt79, on 03/27/2008, -2/+8Do people actually still not use Ad Block and view advertisements?
- isntreal, on 03/27/2008, -2/+7Myspace users? yes.
- MattBD, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2People who use MySpace generally don't use Firefox. After all, you still can't customise your profile in anything but IE
- bowe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1Once everyone knows about AdBlock will the internet die?
- blah247, on 03/27/2008, -7/+0Recession
- diggtochina, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3The description did not fit the title at all
- eriksanerd, on 03/27/2008, -1/+3"Still, the idea that ads can be a social experience is the industry's best hope. Social Vibe encourages members to choose brands to endorse on their pages."
So now we not only have to view the ads, we have to BE the ads? ***** that *****.- InThePants, on 03/27/2008, -0/+3Is it any worse than having a giant Nike or Triple-5 or American Eagle logo on your chest? It's not like "being the ad" is a new concept.
- violentvinyl, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Did you rip all the logos off your clothes, shoes and cars too? How about the wrappers on your food? You're already a walking advertisement.
I'm not saying you have to like it, but advertising is what keeps things free. How many web services do you use on a daily basis that you don't pay for? I think we need MORE advertising.
I think as a global culture (represented by trends on the internet) we're moving toward a future that has two economic extremes, one will be that people give freely of their time and money to support things they feel passionate about (like the open source movement) and will pass on the knowledge to create, a DIY economy even. The other will be advertiser supported. The only function money will serve is when the two types of "currency" don't directly translate. We ALREADY do this, if you know where to look, you can get ANYTHING for free. Housing, clothes, food, health care and all the other fundamentals of life are available in abundance (in developed nations), not to mention transportation, entertainment, and education.
The point is, if you're not willing to view ads, and in some cases BE the ad, you're going to get left behind, because there are many of us who are willing to give a little to get a little. Advertisers have monetized this resource that we all have available to us in almost limitless amounts; it's called our attention, and that's a beautiful thing.
After all that, I do agree with you, I don't want to be a walking ad anymore than you do, but I say it's going to happen, but let's make sure it happens on our terms, not theirs, get involved. "Social Vibe encourages members to choose brands to endorse on their pages." sounds to me like a "choice" and I'd rather have my choice of ads then have to spend money or do without. - NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1You wouldn't care if I hadn't grabbed AstroGlide first.
- cledet, on 03/27/2008, -9/+2So all I need to do is post an article from Wired onto Digg in order for my posts to make the front page? Got it!
- StultusJuventus, on 03/27/2008, -9/+2Republican
- akkibaba, on 03/27/2008, -0/+9Strange, I always thought that the true monetary value of these social networking sites lies in the gold mine of information they have about 14-30 year olds. Marketers would kill for that kind of detailed information on millions of young people.
- pcpimpster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1The problem is: seeing which idiot their being friends with or which “holy *****” gossip site their visiting that week doesn’t really tell them much about what they will be buying (real money, not just traffic) in the clicked future… Simplistic view - I know.
- bowe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1yep, you really need to somehow inject surveys into the network to make big money. Otherwise the data is just general demographic interests. Like favorite movies, used to be heavily Anchor Man, then more Wedding Crashers. I guess if you are a music label, book publisher, or movie studio this sort of info is valuable.
- pcpimpster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I've never used facebook --- maybe that’s what the applets are for...?
>>Suggesting movies has already been done better via netflix.
- pcpimpster, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1I've never used facebook --- maybe that’s what the applets are for...?

- iancorey, on 03/27/2008, -1/+2The title is a little misleading. The illustration, however, was awesome.
- infomail, on 03/27/2008, -4/+1Social networking has been built on a free service and people desire not to be bothered by ads. I have a dot com marketing business and have spent hours of reading blogs and making comments. And even when I comment on the blog then sign off with http://hotcookies.net I am bashed as a spammer. Now that the social sites have made a free service and have rules about advertising. How are we supposed to feel sorry for them for generating a billion plus dollars each year?
- Millsee, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2I saw an advert on facebook today where in the title they used you're instead of your.
It said a lot to me about the quality of advertising on these sites....- oshu, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1That's a high quality ad. They are speaking to their audience in a language they understand! ;)
- cgbspender, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Why didnt you just tell them they made a mistake in there ad? ;)
- BurnTees, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2on facebook you create your own ad, so if something is misspelled, it's your own fault.
- darkkmind, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1What are they talking about. MySpace makes a huge amount of money in ads.
- bowe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1not as much as they could apparently.
- somespecial, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1They should have a 'pick your sponsor' section on your page, so you can say 'Hi, Im so-and-so" and above it says "This person is sponsored by Coors Light" or whatever.
- ThaDRD, on 03/27/2008, -0/+6MySpace was kinda cool in 2006; then you soon realized on that everybody on the site is a narcissistic, drama loving, Napkin-Nights pic having, attention whore who feels that you should have your ears blasted off as some hip indie band auto-plays while their cluster ***** of a page loads.
- Loma182, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1lol
- bowe, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1do I want to know what a napkin-night pic is?
- ThaDRD, on 03/28/2008, -0/+1They are those pics that are taken inside clubs.
- Loma182, on 03/27/2008, -2/+0evry1 plz go to this link --->http://jonathan-k.myminicity.com/
- GregofJersey, on 03/27/2008, -0/+2It would be great if MySpace and Facebook fell flat on their asses. They both suck and are a wart on the ass of the internet.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Finding people I grew up with before my family moved was pretty bad ass, I don't see how I would have ever got that opportunity otherwise.
- GregofJersey, on 03/28/2008, -0/+0Touche! But in terms of content and how poorly both sites were developed makes MySpace and Facebook a pit of hell. Especially all those applications now on Facebook...)But props to you for finding old friends man!
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Finding people I grew up with before my family moved was pretty bad ass, I don't see how I would have ever got that opportunity otherwise.
- EdwrdDiggrhands, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0Advertising revenue models are having trouble all over the place, not just in social networking. Zillow is a great example too- ad-supported real estate site, prominent player in its space, generating lots of hits.... and making no money. When your customer base is entirely people who aren't willing to pay anything for your product, it should be obvious that you're going to have trouble capitalizing on them.
- EdwrdDiggrhands, on 03/27/2008, -0/+0To clarify: that doesn't mean that these companies are necessarily at risk of going under. The title of this thread is wrong, in that regard. It just limits their revenue potential, which limits their valuations and makes the VCs who bought in at inflated rates look pretty dumb.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1When I'm on those sites, I'm kind of zoned out and not thinking about ads.... on the other hand
How do you tell what an ad is on those sites these days? People install so many aps and clutter pages up so horrificly that everything on the screen looks like ads. - Radigg, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I though they were doing pretty well with the advertising!
