- canewediggit, on 08/19/2008, -3/+91***** yeah. i'm going clubbing in zimbabwe where i can finally afford to make it rain.
- edstate, on 08/19/2008, -9/+87At least the dollar's strong somewhere :P
- DeskFlyer, on 08/19/2008, -4/+71That's over NINE THOUSAAAAAND
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -3/+68Wasn't Zimbabwe the prosperous economic bread basket of Africa before the "Peoples Revolution"?
- acmaurer, on 08/19/2008, -1/+44geez - they're calling it an "economic meltdown." well, at least they're not sugar-coating it.
- ryan83189, on 08/20/2008, -1/+38You have to cash your paycheck and run to the store. If you take too much time you won't have enough to buy all the groceries you need.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -5/+41Do a little research on Robert Mugabe and you'll find him to the prototypical paranoid African dictator. The comparisons to Hitler aren't far off, but he's purging the country of whites.
- relic180, on 08/19/2008, -1/+32They eat their money. Because it has more nutritional value than whatever they can buy with it.
- Spade914, on 08/20/2008, -3/+30THATS OVER 11 MILLION!!!!!!!
...nope....not as catchy - heymike, on 08/20/2008, -0/+23+ 1 on that question.
I would venture a guess a large portion of the public must have reverted back to bartering or precious metals or something by now. Seems more efficient than trying to account for inflation. - relic180, on 08/19/2008, -1/+24Sometimes I wounder that too.
- MikeSetera, on 08/20/2008, -0/+22Cut 10 0's off and TRY AGAIN.
- karabunga, on 08/19/2008, -0/+21Indeed it was...
- ihateaubergine, on 08/20/2008, -0/+21Give up on money... go back to the barter system.
- tama00, on 08/20/2008, -2/+22If you dropped a handful of zimbabwe million dollar notes, you would earn more money in the time it took you to pick it up.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 08/20/2008, -1/+19When your ham sandwich costs $12 Million at noon, and $16 Million at dinner -- doesn't it seem like you would find barter easier to deal with than a currency?
The poor don't fear a financial collapse as much as creditors -- maybe they should just declare bankruptcy and start over. Call it a Jubilee every 20 years. - NathanJr, on 08/20/2008, -2/+17If I had $400,000 for every time I heard a story like this, I'd be a trillionaire!
- Fmunkey, on 08/20/2008, -2/+16THTHTHTHTHAT'S OVER OVER OVER THTHTHTHAT'S OVER 11 11 MMMMMMMMILLION!

maybe?
nah, i dont like it so much. - ComeOutSwingin, on 08/20/2008, -0/+14Just keep repeating it and it will become catchy.
THAT'S OVER 11 MILLION!!!!! - elithebest, on 08/20/2008, -8/+20If you mean before black people took over then yes.
- relic180, on 08/19/2008, -6/+18You're a partisan moron.
"McCain is nothing like him, stupid." correct.
"Obama, yea he's pretty close." Did you see all that credibility you almost had except it went flying out the window? Yea, that was pretty nuts. - sroop, on 08/20/2008, -1/+13Add some random techno...
THAT'S OVER 11 MILLION!!!!! - TVarmy, on 08/20/2008, -2/+13What? 9000? That can't be right!
- XX55XX, on 08/20/2008, -1/+12Mugabe needs to take a high school economics class, for *****'s sake.
It's lovely how how Mugabe thinks like a child economically - print more money and make everyone rich, that will solve the problem!
Mugabe = Fail - bakersfield90, on 08/20/2008, -3/+14I read the title and thought I saw something about Zombies.
That's the third time I have been disappointed today. - worldchanger, on 08/20/2008, -0/+10not quite. the "black people" didn't take it over. Robert Mugabe took over and kicked out all the white farmers, using the propoganda and fear to gain the support of the blacks. problem is, those white farmers were the ones who knew how to run a farm. now that they're gone, Zimbabwe is no longer producing any food, and thousands are starving as a result. meanwhile, Mugabe and his friends print money to buy whatever they want, and devaluate their currency in the process.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -1/+11haha 100 billion dollar note. Can't wait for the Austin Powers references...
also love the cost of a loaf of bread. Yours for only 1.6 trillion - atdigg, on 08/19/2008, -1/+11Do they still use money?
- TrentSteel590, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10I'm sure Zimbabwe's lumber/paper mill and printing industries are doing just fine.
- pakakapa, on 08/20/2008, -1/+10THATS ALMOST ELEVENTY MILLION!!!!111
- karaokekidd, on 08/20/2008, -0/+9I think there is still a kill on site order for white people in Zimbabwe.
- ryan631, on 08/20/2008, -2/+10Did not see a Godwin happening in a zimbabwe currency thread. thank you internet.
- TVarmy, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8Their old $500 bills are now actually cheaper than a sheet of toilet paper. Wrap your mind around that.
- andergriff, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8It's gone up a few billion since you posted.
- mrjhmm, on 08/20/2008, -0/+8Mugabe stole 4,000 farms from white farmers that had lived there for over 100 years. He then gave them to his political supporters who sold all the farm equipment and anything of value. They even stripped away anything with metal and sold it as scrap.
Now these farms are not producing anything and the blacks that used to work on the farms are out of work. Thousands of people are starving. Zimbabwe used to be a net exporter of food, now it has to import food. - Jeffler, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Over 9 Million would've worked just fine...
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7Thanks for not sharing the first 2.
- trispear, on 08/20/2008, -1/+8Let's get real, stop overanalyzing this and pin the real blame on the cause: Zimbabwe has been in the economic crapper since they kicked the european farmers out and tried to do a land redistribution deal like communism.
It was racial hatred against a group, plain and simple. And with that, apparently a brain drain occured. - ryan631, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7I wanted to buy some zimbabwe currency, since it would be funny saying i'm a multibillionaire. The teller said it is a restricted currency. Wheres the fun in having hyperinflation if we can't all be billionaires?
- Paulish, on 08/20/2008, -0/+7I bet $1 (Zimbabwean currency) are worth a lot now. Because I doubt anyone in Zimbabwe has seen one for ages.
- DreadPirate, on 08/20/2008, -4/+10Oh sure, it's always Bush's fault. Never mind the many democrats and europeans that have been supporting Mugabe for years. Those *never* factor into the equation where you're concerned. You must always find a way to make it Bush's fault. Buried.
- intelliot, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Afro, ha. Actually, printing money causes inflation. The Zimbabwean government kept printing tons of money, thus decreasing the value of the Zimbabwe dollar. Additionally, President Mugabe instituted a land reform program that takes land away from white farmers and redistributes it to others. Out of ~4,000 white farmers, only a few hundred are left, and they are currently being evicted. Prior to the land reforms, Zimbabwe was a net exporter of food. Now, they're a net importer, and people are still starving. It's likely that the new farmers don't know the agricultural techniques required to make the most of the land. August 1, 2008, they cut 10 zeroes off the currency, so $10 billion Zimbabwe dollars became $1 -- and inflation is still getting worse.
- inactive, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6Zimbabwe was the breadbasket of Africa. Bring in a racist dictator who drives the farmers off their lands and hands the lands over to those who don't know how to farm it. Look what you get. Sad thing is the people have to suffer because of the idiocy of one man and his maniacal supporters.
Once they get rid of Mugabe, maybe there is a chance to resurrect their country. As long as he reigns, the country will remain in squalor. I guess it's true that some would rather reign in hell than serve in heaven. - gr00vy, on 08/20/2008, -0/+6The government is self knowingly trying a two pronged policy of price controls and printing excess money. They know this, and the result is exactly as expected, runaway inflation. They can't tie to another inflation, because they cannot afford to buy or build enough "wealth" to serve as market basket to support the economy in other currency.
Generally this is "fixed" by an overthrow of the government, which is no longer serving the people. This is apparently being put off because the Army is supporting the current government.
This of course cannot stand, it will result in the end of the country by coup, force, or starvation. - Tommyhawk, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Someone who advocates on behalf of the people could never be bad could they?
- curtisag, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5Given their economy, silver or copper might be better choices.
- simplyintricate, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5100 billion Zimbabwe currency = 1 USD.
1 oz spot gold on 8/19 = 813.70
1 oz spot gold = 81,300,000,000,000 Zimbabwe currency.
If I switch to Zimbabwe currency I can be richer than Bill gates in terms of numbers!!! - OC73, on 08/20/2008, -10/+15Somehow the leftists on Digg will figure out a way to blame Bush and the "neocons".
- stickyman, on 08/20/2008, -0/+5They already did that
