- homercles337, on 10/17/2009, -2/+20Are you ***** kidding me? What a stupid idea.
- BrandonJM, on 10/17/2009, -1/+16In NYC, the cabbis would tweet back, but since Digg is a family website, I can't reprint what they would say.
- ranon78, on 10/17/2009, -0/+9They are going to get buried in spam and false bookings.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -3/+10Life just got ten times gayer.
- borez, on 10/17/2009, -0/+6"Plus, its drivers are required to have the same level of licensing and vetting–needed to navigate the city’s complex roads–as those who pilot the city’s Black Cabs"
You mean they have ***** satnav.
And FTR: Anybody who does have "The knowledge" as it's called, drives a black cab privately and doesn't work for some daft minicab company. I mean why in gods name would they, they make too much money and have status as a black cab driver. - inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+5Id rather have a cabbie use a bluetooth headset and call you, then to take their focus off driving in order to respond to a tweet. Many states banned using the cell phone unless you have a headset.
Both hands on the wheel folks, its not just a suggestion. - mehan, on 10/17/2009, -1/+6or, you know, stop being a luddite and get a cell phone, it has many other uses beyond hailing cabs.
- Subduction, on 10/17/2009, -0/+4I hate you and everything you stand for.
- andrewtheart, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3You have to give a payment method in the booking tweet ... someone will sort through all of the tweets and see which ones have valid payments methods. For credit cards this seems like it would work wonderfully, but for cash ... that could be an epic fail business model.
- lolfantastic, on 10/17/2009, -1/+4I guess a black guy will finally be able to hail a cab.
- awhiteflame, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3Why? I wasn't complaining about my choice, just saying that I would use it.
I'm a student, and I don't -need- a phone. I see no reason to pay an exorbitant amount of money (Canada carriers suck) each month for a luxury. - LokitheComplex, on 10/17/2009, -0/+3Apparently you can even call for one on your mobile too.
- paydayadvances, on 10/20/2009, -0/+2It is realy incredable. I wander is there profile of driver?))
- nonny001, on 10/18/2009, -0/+2I don't know what anybody thinks of this. But for me, this is innovation at its finest. The fact remains that people are different. Sure, getting a taxi from twitter may be less convenient for some people (you wouldn't be needing a taxi from twitter if you live or work close to a taxi park, would you?). but for so many, it's like stopping a taxi right inside your room or office. really, this is nice. These all means that i can actually sit on my computer and ask a taxi to come pick me up in 10 or 15 minutes time. Wao! that's soooo cool and comfortable.
- inactive, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2A process that will DELAY the arrival of the cab.
Seriously, within 5 minutes of CALLING Yellow Cab, a cab will arrive. They ask me Cash or Credit, I'll say credit and immediately they'll send a cab.
If you submit through twitter, then you'll wait a bit for someone to verify the info before dispatch sends a cab because they are filtering out the obvious spam. Never underestimate the power of a spammer, because anyone can get a pre-paid CC and bypass the filtering process.
Sorry, but the current way of hailing a cab, be it by simply calling them from your apartment or raising your hand on a street corner, it is far more effective than twittering it. - Nicoon, on 10/17/2009, -2/+4HEIL TAXI FÜHRER
- boomqweeshaa, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1I just thought "wow, I can take out my phone, press a few buttons and a taxi would be on its way." Then I remembered the calling feature I have on my phone. Sometimes I hate what gadgets have done to me, :-(
- andrewtheart, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Give it a few weeks to be created and approved. Or maybe only a week.
- gailkim, on 10/17/2009, -2/+3Twitter will be like the chat rooms of the 90's. Does anyone really get on there and think "what a great idea this is!"
- Shenaniganer, on 10/22/2009, -0/+1I like this idea. Hey people, it's called INNOVATION. Call Twitter a "mini-blog" all you want, but you're only limiting yourself.
- BenRT, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Blogging...? Did you even read the article? It's a direct message. It's not much different to emailing them.
- fxu1989, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2Well, you already bought the phone, and are paying for the minutes/plan... might as well put them to use, right?
And if you tweet, you are paying for the internet connection. - awhiteflame, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2As much as it seems gimmicky, I would actually use this. I have an iPod touch and no cell phone, so if I'm on campus and I needed a taxi, it would be a lot easier for me to just use the campus wifi instead of finding a payphone.
Granted, I'd have to open a twitter account. - andrewtheart, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1I don't deny that traditional cab-calling services are better and faster -- Twitter just gives people another option. It's like Dominos offering an online-ordering option on top of the phone-ordering and pickup service. Not that technically hard for a company to implement (apparently) and gives people more ways to get access to the product. If this system gets greentomatocars 20 more customers a day, then perhaps the extra effort justifies the cost of setting up such a system.
Honestly I wouldn't see myself using this except for novelties sake or I am feeling particularly antisocial (and don't want to call a human being on the phone). I'd probably prefer to call the cab via phone, but I don't know how that works -- can you give your CC info over the phone?
I think this article overblows the significance of this new option. greentomatocars's big deal is being environmentally friendly -- this is just a minor (but sort of cool) side benefit. - chubbstar, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1family website? good one.
- BenRT, on 10/17/2009, -2/+2Why is it a stupid idea? Tweeting them is free, rather than calling them, which wouldn't be.
- homercles337, on 10/17/2009, -2/+2Blogging for a cab is ***** stupid. Blogging! For a cab? You know sticking your hand in the air and whistling is also free.
- lakerslive2004, on 10/18/2009, -1/+1Not if you're black.
- fandyboy, on 10/18/2009, -1/+1What a stupid ***** gimmick, who's going to bother logging onto twitter and writing a message when 10 minutes ago you could have spoken to a human being and the taxi is on its way.
- AdamStoner, on 10/17/2009, -4/+2Wow! Will try this out next time I need a cab... :)
- daveymcwavey, on 10/17/2009, -7/+3NYC can kiss London's arse mofo
- supersonicjim, on 10/17/2009, -8/+3There's nothing 'eco' about the Toyota Pious.
- GeordieRacer, on 10/17/2009, -6/+1There's an app for that!! :|
