1. Forbes.com - Dewhead, on 05/04/2009, -4/+29Go Texas. I checked out the Best Cities for jobs and the top 5 were all in Texas.
- pookydirt, on 05/04/2009, -1/+25"The economic well-being of many metropolitan areas in the Sunshine State has been sinking precipitously since 2006."... I think that's a bit gentle, actually... I thought it was pretty close to full under at this point... victims of their own state-wide mudslide. The economic slump affecting the full country just adds more water.
- drmangrum, on 05/04/2009, -1/+23Texas has always been a good place to work. Good wages, realistic cost of living, good weather, decent schools ( for the most part), extremely diversified industries, and they don't bleed you dry with taxes.
I've lived and worked in the South East most of my life, but I would love to go back to Texas. - inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+22Worst Big Cities For Jobs

- esser1999, on 05/04/2009, -1/+19Is California a microcosm of the USA?
"Much of the problem lies with the state's (California) notoriously inept government. The enormous budget deficit will almost certainly lead to tax increases, which will fall mostly on the state's vaunted high-income entrepreneurial residents. Stimulus funds won't do much good either, Adibi notes, since "the state is grabbing all of the federal stimulus money" to keep itself afloat.
A draconian regulatory environment also could dim California's prospects for growth. Despite double-digit unemployment, the state seems determined not only to raise taxes but also to tighten its regulatory stranglehold." - bloominoctober, on 05/04/2009, -1/+19After looking at those 3 lists of worst cities for jobs, all I can say is .... it sucks to be in Michigan right now.
- stutimandal, on 05/04/2009, -1/+19Where is the numbered list split across multiple pages? Damn you Forbes.
- frequentFlyer, on 05/04/2009, -1/+19Nah. Cold, hard numbers. TX has realistic housing prices and is very business friendly. I've seen LOTS of cali and FL plates here recently.
- drmangrum, on 05/04/2009, -3/+18@PeeEqualsNP
Yup, I've pointed those reasons out in some of the articles poking fun at Texas. Many people on Digg who claim to be educated simply don't understand what a power house state Texas is.
You can make fun of some of the religious nuts that live in Texas. You can make fun of how crazy most Texans are about their guns. But the fact of the matter is, if the country as a whole were run half as well as Texas, many of our problems never would have even happened. - PeeEqualsNP, on 05/04/2009, -1/+13The reasons you point out are the same reasons that if they did happen to secede... they probably wouldn't be too bad off.
- RHollister, on 05/04/2009, -1/+13Did anyone not know Detroit was going to be #1 before that slide came?
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -0/+11Hopefully she sees this comment and agrees to it.
- subUrbanLEGEND, on 05/04/2009, -1/+11Detroit: Most likely place to lose your job and get shot in the face on the same day.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -2/+12The car business has been 'too big to fail' for decades now. It is hardly an industry at all any more. It is more like a non-profit. What you say is pretty true in Michigan. It is telling that the majority owner of Chrysler and GM after bankruptcy will be the unions. Neither business will attract much capital because of this. Like a dying star these companies will continue to shed outer layers until only a cold dead (worthless) core is left. The funeral will be well attended by empathetic democrats.
- manx27, on 05/04/2009, -0/+9Also, Florida is the Sunshine State - California is the Golden State
- KennMac, on 05/04/2009, -1/+10I came to the comments looking exactly for this. Thank you for doing my dirty work.
- pathouston22, on 05/04/2009, -1/+9Or its a fact. Texas didn't start losing jobs until THIS YEAR (or Dec 2008). Despite a hurricane taking out southeast Texas and Houston for 1-2 weeks in the 3rd quarter last year.
- brstilson, on 05/04/2009, -0/+8That's what Hoover did to exasperate the depression. California lives in a dream world. They need to realize that something's gotta give.
- TheMachine1, on 05/04/2009, -1/+9There was no housing bubble in the state either.
- manzplan, on 05/04/2009, -2/+9not so bad in Alberta Canada, there are "Help Wanted" signs all over the place here...
- XxtraLarGe, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6Small Cities #1 was Jackson, MI, not MS
- seanjohntx, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7No state income tax in Florida and its run by the Republicans.
- endgame, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7I live in Southern California & I cant tell you how many of my friends & associates have packed up their families & moved away from this state. I'm very blessed & fortunate I have a good stable job but if I lost it I would leave this crap hole in a flash. I'm constantly telling folks stay away from California it's a horrible place to work & live unless your a multi-millionaire. The traffic here is horrendous, we are the highest TAXED in the NATION, everything is expensive, & every place is crowded. The weather is great & it's a great place to visit but thats about it.
- zomgflamer, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6California is nothing but an illusion. Its a state of high inflation and anal rape taxes, ur better off doing a construction job at butt ***** no where Colorado than any graduate degree required occupation in cali.
- falser, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7And you get to shoot anyone who steps on your lawn.
- Schober43, on 05/04/2009, -0/+6No seriously... Is it so hard to have them on one page? And without an automated slide show thing?
- maz2331, on 05/04/2009, -12/+18No, because they have a mental disorder that prevents seeing obvious correlations if they conflict with emotion and dogma.
- edwartica, on 05/04/2009, -1/+7That's because no one in there right mind wants to live in Texas.
- saikyan, on 05/04/2009, -11/+16By addressing everyone as "you liberals" you totally put us all in our place. Good job, conservative internet crusader. You made a difference!
- Kumah, on 05/04/2009, -1/+6That's because you don't have to be smart to work in Texas.
- inactive, on 05/04/2009, -20/+25Do you liberals see the correlation between profligate state spending, high taxes, corrupt unions and a state's place on this list? Probably not.
- reiggin, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5Relax guys. I think he's happy with Cupertino.
- mouthbreether, on 05/04/2009, -1/+6It would suck more if you showed up. Please stay away.
- pookydirt, on 05/04/2009, -3/+8I noticed that too...
Hmmm... submitter bias, maybe?
; ) - zosoIV, on 05/04/2009, -0/+5Makes me sad to live in Michigan. :(
- redrabbit, on 05/04/2009, -1/+6A lot people like to overlook the fact that for all the jobs that have been lost in Detroit in the last 15 or so years from American automakers losing business, *more* jobs have been gained in the South's auto factories, where Japanese car companies have factories. We can't have our cake and eat it too, America.
- Cannonballkid, on 05/04/2009, -1/+5You mean you want your city to show up as a place where jobs cant be found?
- Kangalanatolian, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4Why do you make us wait to load each city? Unneeded suspense, and 5 minutes of my life I won't get back.
- denisrs, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4For Europe... surely Rome, south Italy, Lisbon... well... all europe!
- Firehunter, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4To be honest, it's because Richmond isn't really the best place to find a job right now, nor is it the worst. We're just doing what Richmond does best. . . get drunk and weather the storm.
- swizzcheez, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4Don't know why Ohio as a whole is cited in the title -- Cleveland and especially Toledo have long been the employment "armpits" of the state, though Dayton seems hell bent on becoming a crater too.
- firewall1, on 05/04/2009, -0/+4***** FORBES and that 'click for the next page, to read one sentence' bs.
PUT THE ***** ON ONE PAGE! - KennMac, on 05/04/2009, -1/+5So we should be able to take a list of Democratically governed states and assume they should all conveniently fall into your crafted assumption, right? Just like Florida is an "exception" to your rule, there's a whole lot that your blanket statement doesn't cover.
- bwhite, on 05/04/2009, -4/+7Cleveland. The city that thinks they matter.
- Shawn4168, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3I'm pretty sure that Michigan is not a city in Michigan. It's just a typo.
- splorpdotorg, on 05/04/2009, -0/+3I always forget, which one is the Delusional State?
