- Spero, on 02/06/2008, -5/+33This is what happens when Cthulhu finds his photo posted on Egyptian blogs.
- Herrold, on 02/06/2008, -1/+28Wow what a great idea offshore outsourcing is! Its cheaper and the internet will connect the "back office" and "call centers" using VoIP phones.
I think we have just spotted a small flaw in that plan. - KraftDinner101, on 02/06/2008, -0/+26We don't know why the cables are damaged, it's still being investigated. All we know is that more and more are being reported damaged as time passes. Whats most odd is the distance between the damaged cables is pretty far, leading most to believe that it's sabotage and not simply a ship cutting it with an anchor.

- digggggggggg, on 02/06/2008, -2/+22Undersea cables are designed to be durable, and they usually have a very long useful lifespan. A majority of the RF cables from back in the 80's and 90's are still usable today, albeit with lesser bandwidth capacity. Modern fiber optic cables are extremely durable with low maintenance, and they actually are buried, not just laying on the sea floor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_communicati ... .
There are not that many (around 100) undersea cables around the world, and they carry most of the world's communications. Five of them cut in the past week, not caused by boat anchors (Egypt verified this), and not caused by natural disasters, is an extremely suspicious occurrence. It is definitely not just a news bandwagon that all the news outlets decided to hop on this week. - DiggityDugged, on 02/06/2008, -5/+24One of the craziest string of news stories just got crazier. 5th cable cut:

Everyone knows they like to chew on cords. I bet there are millions of scuba diving squirrels snacking on the intertubes as we speak! - BrittonBK, on 02/06/2008, -1/+12So does this mean I can call customer service and talk to someone who speaks English?

- colorme, on 02/06/2008, -2/+12So, just to clarify, it's a well funded operation?
- MindTrigger, on 02/06/2008, -6/+16Has anyone seen photos of these cut cables? I have heard a report or two that they are cleanly cut as if a cutting torch was used. From what I understand of the structure of these cables, it would take a cutting torch to do it. This suggests to me that this is a well funded operation. I don't see how this could be anything less than a well funded and advanced operation.

- wimmers, on 02/06/2008, -4/+14Ahh finally - a REAL solution to ending Spam e-mail!
- MindTrigger, on 02/06/2008, -1/+11Undersea welding/cutting is a specialized profession dick wad. Are you suggesting that you could run down to Lowes, then head for the ocean, jump in and start cutting *****? Get an education.
This doesn't even take into account actually locating the cables with a boat/ship and getting in the water undetected. - krnldmp, on 02/06/2008, -2/+12The whole operation must be quite a bit more complicated than operating some common SCUBA gear and a lesser common underwater cutting torch. You'd have to know exactly where to go to target the cables and better, you'd have to have serious support to get you there (multiple points around the world) undetected. Its pretty damned unlikely to be a pack of bored vandals.

- MindTrigger, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9hahaha @noahhoward, yeah because the companies who spend millions, if not billions, of dollars laying submarine cables all around the ocean, are just throwing down the same ***** I can buy on a roll at Home Depot. That makes for a fantastic return on investment for their time, hard work and money. What the hell are you smoking? I want some.
- ampersand2001, on 02/06/2008, -10/+18ahh, this is great.
world economic downturn + war with iran (which also means war with russia) = bush canceling the election, instituting marshal law, and reinstating the draft.
enjoy! - steveiskfc, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9Why is CNN not covering this? This should be pretty damn big news!
- slantyeyed, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9nope, the big news today are the super tuesday results and the mid-south tornadoes . . . ask someone from Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee etc if they care if someone on the other side of the world can't access their myspace page.
- tightscrummy, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9The Koran doesn't mention undersea cables...therefore they don't exist.
- tightscrummy, on 02/06/2008, -1/+9Cables don't just cut themselves. There must have been explosives in addition to the jet fuel.
- 4degrees, on 02/06/2008, -0/+8the cable cut itself? wow. :-P

It may be worth noting that there are also overland cables so I find it hard to believe a nation can be cut off in this manner. - tommyredcoat, on 02/06/2008, -3/+10Release the carrier pigeons!
