- Hedison, on 07/01/2009, -1/+16Really sad. But is a house worth killing yourself over?
- ProjectGSX, on 07/01/2009, -1/+15Glad to see the new dupe checker is failing so miserably.
- OUberLord, on 07/01/2009, -2/+12What this story doesn't contain is the details on her twitter feed, in which she talks about what tattoo she should get next and about her husband playing video games.
1) Though you need some disposable income to keep sane, keeping a dog, getting tats, and video games aren't exactly all necessary to live.
2) There are far worse things in life that can happen to a person than getting evicted, and when they happen to others you rarely hear about them offing themselves. Some sort of mental illness seems to be at play here.
3) In her twitter feed she implies that it is the governments fault that she is in her position.
Sure, times are tough as ever, but not impossibly so. If you can't pay the rent suck it up and do without the tats and the dog until you can. - Moderatorated, on 07/01/2009, -6/+14Step 1: Enjoy Life at some point & have ideas and goals for the future
Step 2: Have no possible way to accomplish them
Step 3: Be in crazy debt with nothing to show for it and nothing left to do.
Step 4: Fight it. Save, starve, life problems, job problems, health problems, Starve more, more debt less money.
Step 5: Lose.
Option A: Throw everything you own away but a back packs worth, take your family onto the streets, continue working your job. For the next decade not be able to get an apartment or a bank acct because of credit problems. Not to mention you will never enjoy, accomplish or buy anything for yourself again. You owe the bank $XXX,000 +tax +interest+late fees+other + Life expenses, Food, rent, medical, legal, tax, schooling, essentials, transportation, etc. it basically = Slavery, w/o the perks of free "room & board".
Option B: Suicide. - thegman3, on 06/30/2009, -2/+9Damn what a sad story.
- wolfing, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6Most probably the dupe checker worked just fine, but the poster ignored it
- madk, on 07/01/2009, -5/+10Option C: Live within your means and still be happy.
- illDecree, on 07/01/2009, -0/+4It's all priorities man. i'm geting laid off on 7/17. i just found out today. when i get home after work today, i'm going to turn off my A/C, and manage to save as much money as possible. i'm not getting rid of my dog (unless absoltely unavoidable), but, i'm definitely not spending money frivolously on tats, and other crap. i may even turn off my internet for awhile. having a roof (to me) is more important. i'm not losing my home without a fight. is it the gov't's fault? no (even though i work for them).
At this point, i just have to suck it up, and take it as it comes. saving every dime i can now keeps me from living on the streets - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -5/+8Step 1: Enjoy life, and have goals for the future
Step 2: Take steps to accomplish those goals, all while exercising sound financial planning
Step 3: Retire in peace
Plenty of people do it. - ChrisEhl, on 07/01/2009, -0/+3According to this article she killed herself on the 29th and her last tweet was on the 24th. How is that tweeting “just before death”?
http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/juice/2009/06/he ... - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -4/+6Option D: Get a clue and realize many of these people aren't to blame
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2I agree its a viable option and all, but these bastards shouldn't be taking people's homes away because the economy changed.
I hope a law is passes on house prices that negate a negative value change of more than 10% for people that have been paying a mortgage for so many years, its sickening and there will be more suicides to come, even though there have probably been many more. - BMPOvojvoda, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Florida does suck hard for jobs now
- Xplorer, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2But it has a different url......
/s - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2So you walked away from everything you worked to achieve, financial stability in old age, a place to live that costs you nothing when paid off, and your happy with renting? good for you.
Some people are not happy with that, they worked and contributed to that mortgage and the bank basically said ***** you, you pay the rates no matter what the house is worth and if you end up paying more than what its worth, we don't care.
I hope these banks burn down, if the house drops in price what your paying should drop in price, people shouldn't suffer and lose there homes in a recession, they should be saved. - Wesside, on 07/01/2009, -4/+6and buried for ignoring the dupe checker
- HippyJM, on 07/01/2009, -1/+3Florida just sucks; period.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2We're saying the same thing.
*I* didn't walk away, simply saying doing so is a viable option.
The bank is saying that to me, "You should pay 8% on a loan even though the federal interest rate is much, much lower than that and your house is now only worth 40% of that loan."
And I'm saying, "Well, I just ran some numbers and I'd actually come out on top if I just walked away from this and rented a place of the same size for a few years. So do you wanna adjust my rate? I pay on time each month and I notice you're adjusting rates for people who aren't on time. No? Oh, well you might wanna think twice about that because the ball's actually in my court." - aspec, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2I don't think her suicide was supposed to be symbolic. I don't believe she thought it was going to prevent someone else's house from being taken.
- AtomicTheory, on 07/01/2009, -1/+3No, the times didn't force her to kill herself. She chose to do that on her own.
- camaroz06, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Nope
- OUberLord, on 07/01/2009, -0/+2Your assumptions would be incorrect. Not only that, but not once does any article on this story mention her employment status. The only thing I've seen is in the story that quoted her in her Twitter feed something along the lines of how she didn't want to work, she wanted to just win the lottery already.
Again, times are tough, but correlating the cause of this woman's suicide to the current economic situation is a tenuous connection at best. - MindStalker, on 07/01/2009, -2/+3Umm seriously, Foreclosure isn't the end of the world. The idea that you can't get into an apartment with bad credit is stupid. You might not be able to get into the nice apartment you really like, but there are TONS of apartments out there you can get into with just a months deposit.
Foreclosure debt won't ruin your life, you can file for bankruptcy, aside from that generally the bank has little recourse to force you to pay. If they find recourse no one can lean against your income more than 50%.
Its like killing yourself because you owe too much child support. Man up nancy and get on with your life. - gnixon70, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1I realize the time put in and investment factor on a house,
but is having to adjust to your situation and actually <gasp> renting so distasteful to some people that they feel that suicide is a better alternative? - damack, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Honestly when your in that situation it's probably quite hard to think about maintaining your life.
I mean where was this lady supposed to go she no longer has a home and it's unlikely she will find employment now.
A lot of people across America are victims of this situation and if Obama approves bulldozing cities across America unfortunately a lot more people will be homeless.
Best case scenario is they end up in a city apartment with a decent paying job. Worse case scenario is unthinkable but this isn't a strange scene by any respect to be honest you can go to Detroit and buy a city block for tens of thousands of dollars nowadays.
There should be more stories like this in the press it's time people woke up to reality rather than pretended it isnt happening. RIP lady. - Phyltre, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1Times aren't impossibly difficult for everyone, but it's very possible for an individual/family to get into an essentially impossible situation. I can't assert that this is the case in this particular story, but some people genuinely have no support or anyone to turn to in their lives through little or no fault of their own. If everyone was financially smart, the world would be a very different place.
- OUberLord, on 07/01/2009, -0/+1The fact that ***** happens is the reason you plan; you don't plan if you think you'll never need to act on what you are planning for. If you plan for unexpected events you are more prepared to deal with them, not immune to them entirely.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -2/+3abw you are an actual retard if you think it is that cut and dry, some people literally live paycheck to paycheck and cannot do ***** all about it as we are in a recession, and getting a better job is a pipe dream.
- inactive, on 09/13/2009, -2/+2Well mr Digg Troll, if you didn't have your head up your ass, you would know that the digg dupe checker update was a fail.
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -0/+0I agree!
- vapn420, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1you're right. in fact, I wish more people would do the courteous thing and kill themselves
- DankBuddz, on 07/01/2009, -1/+1FTA: "With unemployment rates at an all-time high nationwide"
Uh... correct me if I'm wrong, but the national unemployment rate during the great depression was around 25%. What are we at now, 9%? What the ***** is this guy talking about? - BMPOvojvoda, on 07/01/2009, -0/+0well I wouldn't say that... I'd live in Florida as opposed to ***** of other places especially in the north/northeast
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -3/+2Foreclosing isn't that bad in today's climate. Definitely not something to kill yourself over.
It's happening so much that it's pretty much a free pass minus the brief credit report hit. Especially if you foreclosed due to an ARM expiration.
Hell, even my house dropped 40% in value and the banks won't adjust my rate. When I compare the numbers of how much money is getting wasted in interest versus just walking away from it and renting out a cheaper place (same size) for a few years, foreclosing is a very very viable option. Difference is, I can afford my place just fine, I'm just not a fan of wasteful spending.
Guess it boils down to the bank's decision. Would they rather A: adjust my rate, or B: risk having me walk away which in the end costs them even more? - Solkre, on 07/01/2009, -2/+1I wonder if this woman had any support in family or friends that could have avoided this situation. I can't imagine the feeling of helplessness it would take to put a gun to your head.
- amishsamurai, on 07/01/2009, -1/+0Great, now the bank's going to have to pay for the clean-up as well.
- DranoK, on 07/01/2009, -1/+0You hope the banks burn down? Why? Because you're bad at math?
Let's say I take out $100k for a house. I agree to pay 7% interest. The bank pays the seller $100k, expecting me to pay it back.
-3 years pass-
Now my house is worth $50k. But the bank already paid $100k to the seller. You just expect the bank to say, "Oh, whatever, since it's only worth $50k now you just have to pay that off."
Doesn't work that way. If you took half a second to think about it you might understand.
The right thing to do is to let these people be foreclosed. You can't cry on government's shoulder and rely on it to fix all your problems like you could with daddy's. - eastwood24, on 07/01/2009, -3/+2Because of the times.
- vapn420, on 07/01/2009, -1/+0or how about just the fact that ***** happens? we all think that if we plan and save nothing bad will ever fall upon us, but thats not how it works in the real world. let's take for example the ***** show that known as 401 k.
- DrVic, on 07/01/2009, -7/+5Sad story, but suicide is never the solution.
- jrm125, on 07/01/2009, -10/+7Quitter.
- exomorph, on 07/01/2009, -6/+3The USA is the best place to live, unless you're poor, old, or sick.
RIP Heather. - vapn420, on 07/01/2009, -4/+1i'm assuming you either don't work or have never been laid off, because your comment has ignorant all over it
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -6/+2Sure it is.
It's their life, so if they wanna kill themselves who are we to say it's not the right solution? - ShingoEX, on 07/01/2009, -5/+0Sure is samestory around here...
- Moderatorated, on 07/01/2009, -11/+6She was one of us. http://bit.ly/feJ5L
- Pixelante, on 07/01/2009, -8/+0I prefer homicide myself.
- energyx, on 07/01/2009, -9/+1do these symbolic suicides change anything? yea, you can stop the vietnam war, but they'll still take your house
- supermandathoe, on 07/01/2009, -19/+3OH NO SOMEONE KILLED THEMSELVES OVER SOMETHING THEY COULDN'T AFFORD

What is Digg?
