- perceval33, on 02/09/2009, -2/+45sounds great and everything, but with being paid LESS and my bills getting HIGHER, how does that help anyone but the company that doesnt give a *****?
- viraj86, on 02/09/2009, -1/+20with less and less people having jobs, it is up to the exisitng to heighten their productivivty
- pazzlewazzle, on 02/10/2009, -1/+16Not when you need those hours to make a living wage
- uHaveASmallDigg, on 02/09/2009, -4/+18Sounds good to me ... I'll take any excuse to work fewer hours.
- hawksfan03, on 02/10/2009, -1/+14as a salaried employee i would like to say the only reason i am there for 40 hours a week is because i have to be. i can get all my work done in 20-30 hours but i'm required to be there 40. my productivity per hour would definitely rise if i could leave when i was done with my work
- Ceryn1126, on 02/10/2009, -0/+10Its simple if you have less time to get the stuff you need to get done finished you tend to stay off of digg and do your work.
- anthstaf56, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8Massive amounts of layoffs will scare even the most lazy employees I guess......
- FoxMcCloud1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7The sad thing is managers will use this data to say that making you do more work in less time increases productivity. Yay for the man, boo for the people.
Fair work = empoying someone full time, giving them benefits, and letting them do what they do best to help the company succeed. Not, outsource wherever you can and try to make people do more work in less time
facepalm - inactive, on 02/09/2009, -2/+8The point is less people working means longer hours for those that still have a job. Take nursing, most hospitals and clinics are laying off nurses but asking the nurses that are still there to put in hours off the clock. So when your sitting there in the clinic waiting for hours for your shot or whatever be happy it means productivity is up!
- inactive, on 02/09/2009, -1/+7However it doesn't sound good for those who were fired...
- Tyrghast, on 02/10/2009, -2/+8Why not having companies do the ethical thing: dealing with decreased profits but keeping your employees? Maybe cut back the the ridiculous salaries of the higher tier management?
- arbulus, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6I think this is an important point. You don't have to be at work 40 hours. You can be at work for 30 hours and do the same amount of work, because pretty much everyone spends the other ten hours goofing off. But if you have less time in which to accomplish your tasks, your temptation to slack is lessened.
I do believe that the 40 hour work week is an anachronism and harmful to society in general. But the crux here is to get paid the same amount of money for working 30 hours as you would for working 40.
However, if there were a better educational system that helped people better decide what they want to do with their lives when they finish school, then you have a workforce of people doing what they love instead of punching a clock and being a cog and spending their lives miserable. I really think this is the most important point we need to focus on. Help people find what they want to do and you have happy employees, you have productive and innovative entrepreneurs, and everyone benefits. - nukeleearr, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5There has always been a large disparity between average hours worked when comparing the US against other western countries. Annually Americans work much more compared to other western countries. Countries like France, Sweden, UK, and Canada have better quality of life from working less and other government funded programs / laws but we pay more taxes and our economic growth isn't nearly as high as the US.
- mparker21311, on 02/10/2009, -3/+8We don't eat for eight hours straight, we don't make love for eight hours straight... well some probably do. I mean, we sometimes sleep for eight hours... if we're lucky, but that's about it. My point is why should we work for the benefit of some rich douche bags who think scraping couch change for bread is an honest living for those of us working eight hours a day five days a week so we can live our broke lives without any money to enjoy ourselves on the weekends? And no Health care on top of it!
We cant even kill ourselves because our Government wants a productive body to steal from. - MWeather, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4I have a lot of MRE's and ammunition. I hope you're not counting on our fiat money being worth anything.
- boner79, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5I wonder how much of these statistics are due to companies cleaning house on the lower-performing employees and having their work picked up and done better by the remaining higher-performing employees.
- mparker21311, on 02/10/2009, -2/+6I hate your isolationist Darwinian viewpoint. Has it ever occurred to you that not everyone can be rich at the same time?
And weed is illegal. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4More disparaging of the American worker,The Corporate Captains of Nepotism,Cronyism and Corruption are passing their failures off on the powerless worker drones.
Passing their catastrophe onto the fearful populous so they can condition them to expect less and to give more.
Typical propaganda and it will work as the desperate bottom feeders will start turning on each other out of fear and not dare speak out against their paycheck masters . - kuzotz, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5hmmmmm you can be a business owner, but most don't really get rich. In fact its the most overrated profession in the world. Most businesses struggle even regional chains tend to struggle to balance their books on time. There are lots of things to consider, and most of the time the old guard will have a tendacy to block access into such markets. Soo its really tough, unless the situation is in the form of perfect competition where you aren't going to get rich, but more than likely you won't go bankrupt as long as you stay on the competitive edge. Its really the best bet. But I can say that maybe the way to do it is maybe think about investing now. Due to the crisis its a really good time if you are young, don't have any assets, and you are university educated. In short you don't have anything to lose, and have a lot to gain if you are willing to take the risk, but you don't do anything on your own. This isolationist darwinian viewpoint is a very poor one to have because if you do want to become a business owner it's always good to go into something you like with the intention on wanting to make enough to make it. Because I believe you lose out on a lot in life if you join in the rat race to get rich only to find out that the cheese at the end of the maze is a cardboard box.
- Jlaugh, on 02/10/2009, -0/+4So there punishing the higher performing employee's for being hard workers. You work hard you get to work more and pick up everyone else's slack. Reminds me of when I worked at a shipping company and all of the drivers worked sixty hours a week and the entire office was miserable. And since I worked hard and was a temp I found myself the target of hostility, and all I wanted to do was get on full time.
- MWeather, on 02/10/2009, -1/+5When your time comes, I'll be sure not to help. Lost jobs = less spending = lost jobs = less spending = you're fired.
- GoatMonkey2112, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3I prefer telecommuting from work.
- geoffg, on 02/10/2009, -3/+6Like in western Europe, look at their great productivity!
- BlackJackJester, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Get a job you bums. There are a lot more job openings when you realize any paycheck is better than no paycheck.
- Stephiems, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3I completely agree with this, one of the things that I find most helpful is having a month off. I'm in Australia and we get at least 4 weeks off a year. I now can't believe it when I think about in the USA 2 weeks is standard. I am really an advocate of less hours and more time off. People will work better for you if they are more rested and happy. You will get more work out of them in a shorter period. I definitely know that when I've had some time off, I come back and am probably twice as productive for awhile then right before I left.
I will have a hard time going back to the USA and having worse hours and almost zero time off a year. I know I will have to bargin and probably take less salary for at least 4 weeks off a year, because that time is necessary to keep sane. - WiretapStudios, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3At my job, they cut hours by 1/2 a day on Friday, and made us sign something saying we had to do not double, but quadruple the amount of work (dollar wise). That was three weeks ago. Everyone is now written up, because that number is literally impossible. We are obviously all getting laid off, they just want to make it look like we had a choice, and we decided not to perform. The biggest dick move of any company I have ever worked for.
- Feyr, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3how to make doodles while keeping your spit in?
- bobertoq, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4That's not surprising. I wouldn't mind if school or work was half as long.
- MWeather, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Obama has nothing to do with the vicious cycle that is causing the global economy to totally collapse. He had no part in causing it (wasn't even in Congress when Gramm-Leach-Bliley was enacted). At worst he'll be unable to stop it with spending like FDR did.
I'm glad to hear you have enough food to get you through if the cycle isn't broken, though. Don't forget the ammo, though, or you won't have food for long. - JYoungest1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3I'm going to assume this is because people don't want to lose their jobs, so they work their asses off to keep them.
- kuzotz, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4That's what corporations do in Japan, and this model actually works. Because it essentially allows for the economy to keep moving. And not come to a sudden halt as everyone company starts to layoff people. Point is. unemployed people hurt society because crime rates usually go up as unemployment rises.
- Capicuaman, on 02/10/2009, -0/+3Dugg for working less hours (more productively)
- d2002, on 02/10/2009, -1/+4Jan: How would a movie increase productivity Michael? How on earth would it do that?
Michael: People work faster after…
Jan: Magically
Michael: No. They have to…to make up for the time they’ve lost watching the movie. - ren1999, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3It is time for everyone to move to a 6 hour day, 5 days a week job.
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+3No they are being paid for less hours than they work. If you want to keep your job you get paid for 40 hours but work 60. This is done by increasing work loads and doing things like having dumb ass meetings at 6am.
- kuzotz, on 02/10/2009, -0/+22 weeks off? dude that's if you're lucky. Usually 3 days.
- Spuy767, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Wow, if there's one thing you CAN'T outsource, it's management. The problem is getting managers based on competence rather than browness of nose.
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -4/+6Nobody is forcing you to work for the benefit of some rich douche bags. You can start your own business and be the rich douche bag. However be prepared to work 16 hours at any given moments, including on weekends. Or you can choose the easy way with the trained monkey job eight hours a day and smoking weed on weekends, but don't complain about it.
- Jlaugh, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2I've started a few businesses now and I have found that almost all of the companies I have worked with don't pay their bills. They pay 2/3 of the payments and stiff you. Every small business I have worked for has had that problem wether is was mine or others. Business people are simply not trust worthy.
- Jlaugh, on 02/10/2009, -0/+21) I agree with you there the next business I start will be retail or wholesale and not service based. Unfortunately for me my skill set in designing and building e-commerce sites, and since I do not have a marketing background doing the retail side of things is probably not the best choice for me.
2) Yes your right, on that I just hate that sort of thing, I had to sick a lawyer on one of my clients it was not fun. It would have been much better for all concerned if the guy had just paid his bill.
3) I am beginning to think that a cash retail business like a coffee stand is the way to go as the average joe on the street is much more honest. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2Hey the last time a had a manger he kept telling he didn't need to know anything about my job to do his job. I always wonder what he did after a quit?
- Epitaph, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2SHHHH!!! (they'll hear you)
- bruce86, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2How does injecting capital in the economy "dampen" entrepreneurship and investment. I think the banks hoarding cash and not making loans is doing that for us already.
How is that belief that humans are rational actors in a market, working for you? - Jlaugh, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2@dupswapdrop
What an excellent idea, chinese management is probably harder working too. - smurfsahoy, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2First of all, when inflation is high / the economy is *****, you should be SPENDING money, not saving it. That's best for the economy, and best for you. How does it make sense that when people with a lot of money in the bank have been losing cash hand over fist, you want to put more in the bank? Spend it on assets that retain value or even produce or appreciate for you instead, regardless of the economy.
Secondly, the obvious implication of the article is that either people would have to work fewer hours for the same pay, or you'd work the same amount of time and get more done, etc. It would never make any sense to universally cut average labor pay. That would just come right back around as fewer sales and stagnate everything. Something that does not happen in a free market economy. Nobody has to worry about hours any more than they already are. - bri719, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2exactly. I'm on salary, and I'm here when my boss is here. total waste
if I come in early, or finish my work, I still don't get to go home early. so I won't get here before 8 unless there's a deadline. IOW, I can't even really shift my hours. lame - kuzotz, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2if pay becomes based on output then workers start to stress out, and office politics tend to get even worse than what they should. I remember working for a telecom company, and we had a quota to make in terms of donations. Meaning we had to call random numbers at inconvenience times in order to get them to donate to us! Point is we had a quota and it got really ***** stressful, and if you didn't meet it you didn't get any wages for the day. Its a horrible model for a company to run on because then we had people trading off donations, and tricking people into losing what they earned by taking their calls for them instead of allowing them to take their own calls. Also lots of back stabbing. I Didn't enjoy that particular corporate culture, and I Tend to prefer one where everyone works hard to make their living without causing any friction with each other. Though I can dream can I?
- RicardoWilliams, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2the title makes me lawl
- inactive, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2What is your job and How do I do it?
- MWeather, on 02/10/2009, -0/+2amightywynde
"The global economy will not collapse. It will correct."
It'll correct, alright, but not until after the collapse.
How do you see people getting laid off because of a drop in spending leading to anything but the laid off people spending less and causing more layoffs?
Do you now know what a vicious cycle is? Without outside influence, it'll run it's course all the way to the ground. -
