- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -10/+65God gave man the Sabbath, "Saturday". The church gave the first day "Sunday". After 6,000 years of building Pharaohs pyramids, "We the people" should demand a day of our own, let's call it FU day.
- bratpack8, on 10/10/2007, -6/+55And who would make this decision? The government? Why don't you let employers and employees make this decision as it all falls under their agreement of wages for productivity.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47Four day work week? Sounds great, but I need a job first.
- ZenMojo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+34I used to work a 9 hour day (8 plus lunch) as a temp and once lost a job because I completed an entire days' worth of work in 5 hours and had nothing else to do. Even after taking on other employees' workloads voluntarily, my boss felt my efficiency and coinciding periods of inactivity were disruptive to the work environment.
Face it, your bosses don't care how much work you get done, they just want to "feel" like they're getting their money's worth out of you. - davidlmulder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30Interesting to see theoretical numbers on this stuff.
I have always thought that I get as much done in six hours a day as I do in eight hours. My morale would increase tremendously if we dropped a day, or went from 40 to 30 hours a week. - titandegroot, on 10/10/2007, -6/+36I love 4 day work weeks, and the ability to work from home.
- rnwen2750, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29But, if we have more of them, they would become more like the traditional two day weekends and traffic would decrease.
- Subvexer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+27If you're going to submit this idea to the white house, you'd better call it "the war on mondays" or something.
- lOvOl, on 10/10/2007, -7/+32I think a bigger problem these days is not how many hours people work, but how much time do they invest in total in getting ready for work, and commuting to and from work, plus any time devoted to "home work". It adds up and a lot of people probably really spend about 80 hours a week actually doing work related activities.
If people did not have to drive to work and had reliable noise-free mass transit then they could get a lot of work done on the way to work, or at the very least just relax, rather than be stuck in traffic. What I mean by reliable, noise-free mass transit is more like your typical airline where if you are obnoxious and loud you get kicked off the plane, as opposed to the socialist nightmare of mediocrity of mass transit systems in big cities where people can pretty much be as uncivilized as possible and have no worries about being kicked off.
Oh yah and you would think that someone by now would have figured out how to make mass transit not feel like a screeching, bumpy, and crowded experience that hasn't changed one iota in almost a 100 years, but then again government managed transit systems are notorious for not caring about the people they are supposed to serve.
Nevertheless, because of the plague of socialism that rots our biggest cities from the inside out, as America becomes more crowded and more sprawled because nobody wants to live in the ghetto where the criminals have more rights and justice than the victims, the amount of time people spend in traffic is only going to get worse and worse to the point where people will spend almost as much time getting to and from work as they actually spend at work. - greenblob, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Wasn't the 8-hr work day/40-hr work week developed by labor unions and a product of pro-labor policies?
The main problem is that some people are working twice as much and still barely getting by. - vertigoblue, on 10/17/2007, -2/+19those people are stupid
- scooterbaga, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18I've been thinking about an 8 day work cycle. 5 on and 3 off. It would, of course, ***** up life as we know it. But it would be nice to have 3 day weekends, and not have to work 10 hour days.
- hinkleti, on 10/10/2007, -18/+32I would counter with three points:
1. A four-day work week would presumably result in a commensurate 20 percent reduction in pay and benefits for workers.
2. This would lead to a 20 percent reduction in output as measured by GDP, firms would have to downsize to cope with reduced production/lower wages/lower demand for goods and services. The government would probably have to levy higher taxes in order to offset declining tax revenue at federal, state and local levels. A 20 percent hit to GDP of the world's largest economy would have devastating effects on the global economy.
3. See France. - uptown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14My vote is for the 5 day weekend, and the 2 day week......
- TheOther1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14metric years...
- cosmicdreams, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14We'll see a 4 day work week around the same time as we see a flat tax.
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12"Do you believe the law of the jungle will guarantee a fair wage for labor?"
If by fair you mean the lowest amount of money someone is willing to do the job for, yes. - TheOther1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13How would 4 @ 10 be less pay than 5 @ 8?
- supermanred, on 10/10/2007, -3/+15Dugg for 4 day work week. Work a little harder during the 4 days and get a three day weekend. Excellent. I always find the 2nd day of a long weekend more relaxing, because I havent gone to work (stress) for a day and I dont have to go back to work the next day. It's this 2nd day that we all love and keeps us sane.
- barnoc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13let me guess, the server is on it's 3 day weekend!
- KingMoses, on 10/10/2007, -5/+16No, but it will guarantee freedom; people will do with it what they choose.
- BlacklabelSAR, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15The real issue here is the Illegal Unconstitutional Federal Income Tax. There's about 1/3 of most people's labor and also The Persuit of Happiness that's being stolen from us. My wife and I, and everyone we know, works so ***** hard that we don't even have the energy or time to maintain friendships outside the workplace. Life, Liberty, and the Persuit of Happiness? Nope. Slave to the grind? Yep.
- trentasaurus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Talk to your boss. Tell him you're taking back your friday. You deserve it.
- MtheoryX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+12Yeah, freedom. You're free to take the job, or not take the job. And in most arrangements, you're also free to keep the job or not keep the job. Freedom of choice.
- searob1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11Time to start enjoying life more. Work and commuting consumes most of our day. Here in the northern latitudes, you barely get to see sunlight in the winter because you leave for work before dawn and you leave work after sunset. It gets really depressing.
Have you ever been stuck in an office meeting near the end of the day to see the evening sunlight reflect off one of the buildings? The most depressing part is when you can actually see the light rays moving, and you realize how fast time is moving by, how much life is passing you by while you sit inside listening to people talk about wanting more meetings. - anothersaab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9it's not 5 days a week that bothers me... it's the lack of proper vacation time in the US. everyone deserves 2 weeks off straight, twice a year. then add-on the personal/sick times. we'd be less sick, i'm pretty sure about that.
- MrKas, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Well we currently manage to fit 52.177 weeks into a year with 7 day weeks... I can't see how it's any different
- butiamjessica, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9I've worked a 4 day week and had every Friday off. I was far more productive. Now I work 4 days in the office and 1 day @ home. I'm very productive and paid more. :)
- Matrixsta, on 10/10/2007, -32/+40"The 4 Day Work Week would mean less traffic congestion"
I call BS, people go places on 3 day weekends...look at Labor Day, memorial day, etc. - SillyRabbits, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I hate it when claim they work so hard but are "still barely getting by". You can have families all from the same city making $30k, $50k, and $70 and each claims they are just barely getting by. The problem isn't that they aren't making enough money, it's that they aren't living within their means. "Barely getting by" almost always means they simply don't handle personal finance properly. A lot of people simply buy the biggest house, nicest car, most exotic vacation they think they can afford.
- WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8No, what you're suggesting is let the GOVERNMENT control you! If there's one thing we should all know, it's that the government is never competent.
- kosmoX, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11Employers are people too.
- ZenFountain, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Some employers are already ahead of the curve on this one. Where I work anyone is free to work 4 10's. I know many white collar jobs are also being more flexible about letting people work at home some of the time as well if it's compatible with their line of work. All that really matters is getting your ***** done in the end, creative employers know this and will accommodate accordingly. No need for the government to step in and re-make the workweek.
- mbradbury, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11You Americans really do "work for the man" don't you. I prefer to live in a society rather than an economy.
- coldphoenix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7First off...its Pursuit....second off, it's the pursuit, meaning the government isn't guaranteeing you happiness, its only giving you the opportunity to pursue happiness, which I'm pretty sure is possible, as I know quite a few happy people.
- ChromaVita, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7OR GETTING PUNCHED IN THE KIDNEYS.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Good for you.
- datagod, on 10/10/2007, -0/+64 Days work week? No thanks. I like my three day work week just fine.
- misterjangles, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6with intermittent commercial breaks to spend hanging out on digg
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I think i would rather work at a workplace instead of at home. I get too distracted when im home trying to do something. Hey im hungry, oh yea i have a fridge. hey im bored, oh yeah i can surf on the web with out consequence. maybe i should watch tv too and listen to music. maybe download some albums, a movie, watch the movie while downloading a game. when the movie is done the game should be done. then play the game. o whoops its 11:00 pm time to go to sleep. see how it all works out.
- TheOther1, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8and direct deposit and no concrete goals and nobody to report to. Basically getting paid to eat cheetos and watch the discovery channel all day.
- WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8LOL that outta do it! He'll end up giving back your Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays too!
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I used to work at a place where we put 10/hr day for four day and get fri/sat/sun days off. it was the best!
- bobcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4well honestly when I'm traveling for work I normally work 50-60 hours a week (not including travel) and I get a lot done. But when at the office, and able to go home I tend to work about 6-7 hours a day in the office and maybe 1-2 at home or in between somewhere. If I work 8+ hours normally there is a period where you are just flat out burned. Doing things like going to lunch, leaving to go pickup a cup of coffee or something though I've found is the key. Also during the summer or when it's not raining taking a walk will do wonders, but you just need to keep things interesting.
Really just breaking up the work day and having my days of are what keeps me going at 90-100% all the time. Otherwise by day 4 I'm running at 70% and by day 5 I'm running at 50-60% if it's just the same old boring thing.
Of course not everyone has this option and I am fortunate, I don't think a 4 day work day would really make the big difference. I think making the work place somewhere you don't hate being at and giving employees some freedom and leniency to break up their day by leaving or taking solid breaks to do things. - mojaam, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5500 Server Error just as it hits home. Great. Mirror anyone?
- MeatRo20, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I work 10 hours a day, 4 days a week... I love it. 3 day weekend every weekend and Monday to get any personal stuff out of the way so there's no reason to be taking off from work (the reason my boss put it in, people kept leaving all day to get stuff done that shouldn't be done during work.)
- fyrewal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I work four 10-hour days, I love it, I get more done, and every week is a three-day weekend!!
- jessehadden, on 10/10/2007, -11/+15That's a great idea in theory, but you might want to research the history of labor before you tell your employer that you think this way. There's a reason why people fought, bled, and died just to achieve the laughable labor rights we have in America now. The free market is great, as long as you remember that it is guided by the law of the jungle. Do you believe the law of the jungle will guarantee a fair wage for labor?
- bugsy187, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I think people deserve to start enjoying the fruits of years of labor and development.
- WikiEasy, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Right... and I wanna eat as much junk food as possible without exercise, and be buff like Arnold.
