- Hillsfar, on 08/17/2008, -5/+40Education is NOT where jobs are growing. School districts everywhere are cutting teaching jobs because of a lack of funding and because fuel costs for school buses are causing them to make cuts elsewhere.
If probably wouldn't cost as much to give legal residents' and citizens' kids an education if illegal immigrants weren't swamping schools with their children and citizen anchor babies. - artofficial, on 08/16/2008, -5/+30Wow, thanks captain D-Bag.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -1/+24one area of the country does better as another shrinks. South continues growth and the Northeast hemorrhages jobs.
- ff2k, on 08/17/2008, -2/+22Dey took err jerbs!!!
- chuckDontSurf, on 08/17/2008, -2/+22But can you ride your bike with no handlebars?
- DerangedPenguin, on 08/16/2008, -11/+28OK I have multiple skills and interests. I can live happily in a city or out in the woods. I can skin a buck and run a trout line and yes I can make homemade wine and beer. But in this day and age where the ability to create an Excel spreadsheet and M.B.A.'s are valued more than common sense some people will no doubt find themselves hurting.
- Temo1, on 08/17/2008, -4/+17I don't understand what you're saying here. Should a company hire a person who has business knowledge or a guy they can go camping with for a week?
- lucy22, on 08/17/2008, -3/+16If you have a job then keep it!
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -4/+16Jobs in the USA that are experiencing growth under the Republicans:
napalm manufacturer,
body-bag manufacturer,
meth manufacturer,
interogator,
torturer,
body-outline chalk drawer
NSA wire-monkey.
Hamburger "manufacturer" - curseoflou, on 08/17/2008, -1/+12can you keep rhythm with no metronome?
- N01SE, on 08/17/2008, -0/+11This really has only a little to do with the recession, education has usually been the last place for local and state governments to spend money unfortunately, that's nothing new. I believe the article is referring to teaching jobs at the University level, not state/city managed institutions.
- w0lfh0und, on 08/16/2008, -12/+22We're on the bring of a worldwide recession, things are going to get tougher and tougher for a good while yet.
- jec68, on 08/17/2008, -6/+15Are we? Real GDP has yet to fall in any quarter in 2008 in the United States. Of course, some people who made bad bets in re: future housing prices are getting corrected into more appropriately sized homes. This is no reason to panic here - especially when panic itself can lead to incorrect decisions by actors (ex: an employer constantly bombarded by such falling sky rhetoric that we are seeing now in the media will become more risk-averse and lay people off).
Chances of a recession in the United States in 2008 can be viewed here:

http://www.chrismartenson.com/fuzzy_numbers - N01SE, on 08/17/2008, -0/+9Actually, as mentioned in the article, there are locations that have been pretty recession-proof, it is all relative to your location and occupation.
- talkingwires, on 08/17/2008, -0/+9I got this handbill that says there's lots of work out in California. They're lookin' for 8,000 workers, pickin' peaches for five cents a box! Why, with all of us helpin' out, we'd own a home in no time!
- Temo1, on 08/17/2008, -0/+9Try teaching in cities. Sure the job is hard as *****, but they need teachers more than anything there. And not even the rough inner-city places either (although they do need tons of those). Suburban teaching jobs are the cushiest and easiest, but those aren't as much in demand, as you say.
- koonchu, on 08/17/2008, -2/+10You lost me there, cowboy. Your bragging go in the way of your...uh...point.
- Nothlit, on 08/17/2008, -0/+8I'm not a Big Fan of the Random Capitalization in this Article's Description.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -0/+8Thanks Dad.
- VegaObscura3, on 08/17/2008, -2/+9Can you lead a nation with a microphone?
- N01SE, on 08/17/2008, -2/+9Do you smell your own farts too?
- booyahbitch, on 08/17/2008, -0/+7That would be "brink" not "bring"...if you are going to be chicken little, please at least spell your Doom correctly!!
- danmk, on 08/17/2008, -0/+7Good to know that I choose a recession proof occupation. Go elderly! As long as you live doctors will have patients!
- ravenpen, on 08/17/2008, -0/+6My mother, sister, brother-in-law and sister-in-law are all teachers and each of them works a good 60 to 80 hours a week when you add in all the work they have to do after they go home each night.
They are not paid overtime when they bypass the 40-hour mark.
The two-and-a-half months they get off during summer doesn't even come close to compensating for it. - DeskFlyer, on 08/17/2008, -0/+6He cans them and sells it as perfume.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -3/+9there are always jobs available, it's just many people think they're "too good" or "above" them. if you need money, you are NOT "above" a fast food job.
- redcolumbine, on 08/17/2008, -1/+7PUBLIC education is hurting (unless you're willing to work for peanuts teaching kids with multiple health problems 40 to a classroom, under a politically appointed supervisor - then they'll take you even if you have a record.) But PRIVATE education is always a sure bet, particularly now that the boomers have retired from their first careers and are looking for a second.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -0/+6I don't think Obama is magic, but you keep thinking that. Maybe McCain will save us from a recession with his magical Vietcong propaganda powers.
- satanatnmtedu, on 08/17/2008, -5/+11No. Common sense says that you should have skills that are easily marketable. You don't have those skills. So, you don't have much common sense.
- rizenality, on 08/17/2008, -2/+8China isn't headed for a recession, Neither is india. If by worldwide you mean The US. Then maybe you are correct.
I'm just glad I just moved to HOUSTON! - toxicityj, on 08/17/2008, -0/+6lies. They smell like roses.
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -0/+5sorry, no. if you need money bad to support a family or survive, you are not. you use it as a bridge back to what you are capable of doing, to get back on your feet so to speak
- Technoloki, on 08/17/2008, -0/+5Many employers are dismissive of applicants whose resumes scream "overqualified," because they expect those applicants will continue looking for work and will resign as soon as appropriate work is found. Which is very likely for obvious reasons.
So, back to fighting for the scarcity of jobs that match your qualifications. - inactive, on 08/17/2008, -5/+1099% of the people who use the word Recession, Have no idea its true meaning. They just repeat what they hear and follow along with the usual sheep.
- ajkxxx, on 08/17/2008, -0/+5don't forget white collar thief
- inactive, on 08/17/2008, -0/+5I wonder if the lack of unions in the South are any coincidence, since the employers aren't being strongarmed into paying outrageous salaries for factory jobs like the UAW is doing to GM.
- jbob2000, on 08/17/2008, -3/+8but can you run Crysis?
- YukosEyes, on 08/17/2008, -0/+4I couldn't figure out how your two sentences were related until I realized that you judged the article based SOLELY on its relevance to you -- an outlier. Interesting.
- lisaawesome, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3This is sometimes true but if they need someone badly enough they will hire you. Places like WalMart and McDonald's have such a high turnover rate they don't give a ***** if they think you are going to leave in a month. I was turned down for a managerial position because they thought I was overqualified and the next day WalMart offered me a job as a cashier. I laughed because I was overqualified to be a manager but not a cashier.
- venuspcs, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3I am an over-the-road truck driver and I haul heavy equipment. I for one can tell you for certain the economy is going to ***** and here is why I say so....in my line of work the worse the economy gets the more military loads I haul. I have seen a steady increase in Military loads over the last 6 months. Unfortunately, war is one of the best ways to stave off an economic collapse and generates lots of jobs, consumer spending (eventually) and I promise you our WAR MACHINE IS IN FULL SWING right now. Don't believe me then go to the nearest truck stop to your house and sit there for a few hours and watch the volume of military loads going through. I don't care where you live in the country military loads are getting moved EVERY WHERE on a DAILY BASIS. BAE Systems in Texas is in overdrive working round the clock building new military vehicles. Every national guard base in the country is steadily rebuilding there deteriorating equipment. Our military is aggressively recruiting as many people as they can and they are taking anyone who will sign up. They are also actively re-calling reservists to active duty. Regardless of who our next president is we are going to war again in the next year or so. The only real question is will it be with Iran and Israel (under McCain) or Russia and China (under Obama).
- Blandyman, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3You realized your attitude, because anyone with a bit of respect would've said "Thankfully, I'm not having too much trouble." or "I'm getting by alright." even if you are rolling in it.
And we all know your farts smell, and that you love it. We can tell by the same attitude that brought us that self-righteous comment. - Twee, on 08/17/2008, -2/+5I agree. My dad works at a Los Angeles inner city school and half of the students get free lunches, yet they all have iPhones and wear $100 shoes...
- Pinkertinkle, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3Wow not only do vets get the girls, but their jobs are stable. Sign me up for vet school, how long does that take?
- ExRe, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3Is it strange that I've never seen an illegal immigrant in a public school system?
It sounds rather strange that a quick citizenship check wouldn't be used when registering for school. I have a hard time believing that illegal immigrants would try to send their kids to a public school knowing that if they were found out (which would be very easy to do) they'd be deported. - inactive, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3Same here. I work in a retail pharmacy that supplies nursing homes.
As long as medicare and medicaid are around I got food on the table. - louiebaur, on 08/17/2008, -2/+5I no longer have a job and work at home. Good thing I have a few websites running:-)
- Spoomeister, on 08/17/2008, -0/+3You've shown the ability to survive when civilization collapses and we all revert to living off the land. Good for you.
If you've seriously lamenting that this doesn't give you job skills, perhaps you haven't tried hard enough to sell your homemade wine and beer. Or you need to translate your skinning skills into a rewarding career in taxidermy. - lisaawesome, on 08/17/2008, -0/+2My mom is at a Title 1 school so all lunches are free. These kids and their parents claim they cannot afford to purchase TI-83s for math class but the same kids come to school with nice phones and ipods and new air jordans. It confuses me. I couldn't afford nice phones or sneakers in high school but I sure found the money for the calculator we were required to buy. It is about priorities and these kids and their parents do not think an education is valuable while the district's median family income is 16,000 dollars a year. Maybe if they gave up those sneakers in favor of a calculator they would be above the poverty line.
