The NY Times puts together a well thought out argument how war funds could have been better spent and in typical rebuttal from the right form your only response is to label it "bush bashing". Why not at least come up with something to justify this war, to make it seem like all this money was well spent. But sadly no, instead of debating the other side you simply trivialize the main point as political propaganda. - merien, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44At least one of them is in the White House
- TheYellowMole, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45Damn Straight. I always wanted to do that, man. And I think if I were a trillionare I could hook that up, too; 'cause chicks dig dudes with money.
- SystmBetatester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+381.2 trillion can buy TPB a nice island....
- mofochief, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37$1.2 trillion = 1.2 trillion junior bacon cheese burgers + tax
- vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39Giving Food and Shelter to the poor is not a worthy cause. Give them a JOB; That's a worthy cause. If part of their pay is food and shelter then so be it. Just giving them stuff only perpetuates the problem, and doesn't give them a purpose by which they could build a positive self image and feeling of self respect. If they are unable to perform the jobs available, then it's your responsibility to take that big pile of money and figure out how to make those people work for a living.

You'd spend 1.2 trillion on ***** a man? - CraigB12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33"The final big chunk of the money could go to national security. The recommendations of the 9/11 Commission that have not been put in place"
I bought a copy of the 911 Commision Findings, and nothing they suggested has been put into place. What a waste to have a panel of EXPERTS perform tireless research on something that important and then have some asshat in the whitehouse ignor everything they suggest. As if anything anyone else says doesn't carry any merit. - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Bush just HAS to figure into any discussion. Cut the politics crap.
Anyway I think a better analogy would be to use GDPs. For 1.2 trillion dollars you could buy every goods and service produced in Russia AND India in a year = you can own all of Russia + India for a year with that kind of money. - shootdashit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27..and maybe one or two playstation 4's.
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34VERY misleading header for a political biased point.
I was looking for stuff such as:
You can buy 250,000 Yachts at ~4,000,000 apiece
Or 1,800 Bill Gates homes
Or 9,000 medium sized Caribbean islands
etc, etc - Chadster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Why invest money in worthy causes for the benefit of mankind when you can make your frat buddies rich?
- vmerc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Just to make sure everyone is C L E A R on the subject:
The deficit is NOT the national debt.
The deficit is how much more the govt. spends than it takes in during one budget cycle.
The debt is how much money the govt. owes in total. - trilks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23if you read the article, you'd know that a huge chunk of money was proposed to go towards fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan. You know, where the terrorists actually are.
- mikemac, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Not even close, man... not even close.
http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/ - thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18same thing hapenned with the Iraq Study group. what a shame that in the year 2007, all our leading experts are still ignored.
- Ndiggnation, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21I've always thought "Bush bashing" is an interesting descriptor of any constructive criticism. This article was not "Bush bashing", but who cares if it were? Who in their right mind, expecially this many years in with the Bush Administration, can champion it? What rational person can argue that this administration has more good than harm to the country and world?
In my short 28 years (I was born during the Carter years), I've never seen a President mired is so much negativity. History will not vindicate him, he will be "bashed" long after he is gone. He's not a poor, helpless vicitm of "bashing". He's only got his own actions to blame. - appetite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16"Bush bashing"
That's how they see any difference of opinion. For example:
"Lawrence Lindsey, a White House economic adviser, was a bit more realistic, predicting that the cost could go as high as $200 billion, but President Bush fired him in part for saying so."
They also fired Gen. Shinseki for differing in opinion on troops counts from the start. So maybe Bush bashing just means "being more correct than Bush". - GamerzCorner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14with 1.2 trillion you could give ever single person on this earth 180 dollars...just proves how much money it is
- aboron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Too bad the money was borrowed to begin with...
- DesiGUY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I would do what gates did, keep a billion to myself and donate the rest to charity...
- argonaut99, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Or, for those of you that don't like to type (and also use Firefox), install the bugmenot extension to login with a simple right-click of your mouse
http://roachfiend.com/archives/2005/02/07/bugmenot/ - djkickz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm a bush supporter and in favor of the war in Iraq, but 1.2 trillion is $24,000 (assuming about 50 million kids) for each kid in America's education. That's hard to swallow.
- espithaca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@TubaTechno
"Kind of like what happens during every president's regime.....kind of like how Clinton did special favors for Haliburton...oh wait....we're just look at the Bush regime and how evil it is....we're not looking at comparisons of other presidents...my bad...."
You're right, because two presidents did it makes it okay. I've heard countless conservatives use this argument. It's specious logic at best. Two wrongs don't make a right. No one's defending the faults of other presidents over the faults of the current administration. Bush gets the attention now because, despite all the lessons that he could have learned from his predecessors, he's STILL DOING IT! - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Am I the only person who was humming BNL's "If I Had A Million Dollars" and replacing "Million" with "Trillion" while reading the article? Does that make me weird?
- dBLiSS, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8If my countries Government was so reckless with public money, they wouldn't be in power very long. I imagine that a lot of democratic countries could say the same thing, except for this "greatest democracy in the world" I keep hearing about. Poor America.
- DreKor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I'm as liberal as the next guy, but I don't like it when people make up... err... project numbers. There is a glaring asterisk next to the cost of the Iraq war where they figured in all kinds of things, including projected health care costs for troops after the war, military strength rebuilding after the war, and even the increased cost of oil after the war. If any of these numbers are close to right, I want these guys to come play roulette with me. I don't doubt that there was some sound research done to pull these numbers out of their asses, but there comes a time when we need to start making real arguments about things that have actually happened instead of appealing to hypothetical future receipts.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And we established some sort of Federation and we could explore the universe! Humanity could go on some sort of star trek..
- MaximusIGN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can just see the smiles on the faces of the Military suppliers and Oil companies when they see that kind of money talked about and the rolling on the floor with laughter at the idea of it being spent on health care, poverty, etc..
Bush has taken the Industrial-Military complex to a whole new level. - trebe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Wow. That really puts it into perspective. Makes me really sad that with all that money we could have cured diseases and saved millions of people's lives, but instead we used it to kill thousands. What makes me sadder is that everyday I am contributing to this by living in America and buying gas. The world is *****.
- thewaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"At least one of them" understatement of the year!
- ophilye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5with 1.2 Trillion, you could give every person in America $ 4,020.85.
I think if you would have told Americans that.. (Yes, the amount includes infants.. it's accdg to July 2006)... they would have voted to keep the $4k.
I would have.
$4k to me, mom, dad, husband, child, siblings, etc ... that's definitely worth more to me than "freeing iraq from a horrible regime". - simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Anything that costs less than $1.2 Trillion... obviously.
a = 120000000000000
b = new item
if [ a < b.cost ] buy : 0 - Wireddd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5where are all of these idiots that can't make sense of large numbers?
- chubbymidget, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think I'm going to be sick....
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8why not just suck 'em off while you're at it.
- TheWorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4My very own middle eastern oil war!
- liah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Maybe, maybe not, but now I have to be angry with you for getting that song stuck in my head.
- Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6forget that, we could finally end the Console Wars by purchasing everyone in the US a Wii, 360 and a PS3... imagine such a world.
- aspirinetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@unixer
it's sick to see young people supporting bush, it just doesn't make sense - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Wow, that's deep. You just blew my mind. Who am I? I'm going to kill myself.
- diggdat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Additionally and perhaps sadly, if we had the $1.2 trillion the author suggests we will not have, as a result of the war, we still would not resolve the items on the list.
Ya just know it.... - PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Someone please post a link to the adult version of digg.
- lxdengar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah, and NOT throwing money at something sure has done a lot too. I got an idea: lets actually TRY throwing money at say, Cancer research. For once.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5considering what you could buy with 1.2 trillion.... it makes the lawsuit against allofmp3 look even more ridiculous...
- TrueBuckeye, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Is it? Many of those numbers are hard fact. Sure, it is political, but it may not necessarily be opinion.
- jabbar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5call me naive, but do we really have to explain the joke to some people??
