- JEWestbrookJR, on 10/17/2008, -0/+31I read "Topples" all wrong and was severely disappointed...
- devonkeale, on 10/17/2008, -2/+19FTA: "The merger has won federal regulatory approval and is expected to close this quarter. It would create the nation's fourth-largest bank,..."
I don't see how that makes it the number one bank. Buried for sounding like you're writing an advertisement (even though I personally like Wells Fargo and have been a customer for 10 years). - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/17/2008, -6/+20This is probably just a paid PR plant article designed to keep people from pulling their money out of Wells.
Dugg down as really obvious self-serving propaganda. - mkameli, on 10/17/2008, -0/+10Dang it, I thought the headline said "topless."
- dn11, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10the fact that Wells Fargo has been gunning to acquire Wachovia tells me they must be doing ok for themselves
- jmpeagle, on 10/17/2008, -0/+9huh? Number one at what? They will just have more branches. BoA and JP Morgan both have bigger market caps. Also, there are some bigger banks outside of the U.S. such as the Banking arm of the Japanese postal service which is more than twice as big as any american bank.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/17/2008, -1/+10Wells Fargo hasn't had any problems yet, and they're in the market to buy other banks, so something tells me that they're doing a little more right than you might think.
- inajeep, on 10/17/2008, -0/+9If you added one more 's' to the title you could triple the amount of diggs you receive.
- TheMidnight, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6A topless Bank of America? Somehow the idea of a bunch of hairy middle-aged overweight cigar-smoking wrinkled balding knobby-kneed executives topless isn't arousing.
- RJNavarrete, on 10/17/2008, -0/+6My brain felt like reading "Topless" for some reason this morning. :/ bleh.
- dmarquard, on 10/17/2008, -3/+9It's about time another bank took BofA's spot at number one.
- UselessTrivia, on 10/17/2008, -1/+7Happy to hear good news about a US bank. Even happier because it's MY bank. Always liked Wells Fargo.
- subtle, on 10/17/2008, -0/+5"Topples" is a really bad word to use when talking about banks right now.
- whorunbartertwn, on 10/17/2008, -2/+7Criminal for following procedures you agreed to when you signed on for account and withdrew more money than you had in it?
Take some personal responsibility pal. - TheUngod, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4Also FTA: "Wells Fargo, whose planned purchase of Wachovia Corp will create the largest U.S. retail branch banking network, said on Wednesday third-quarter profit fell 25 percent, hurt by higher credit losses and investment write-downs."
I guess the argument would be what the criteria for "number one bank" is. - dieboldcracy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4that's my bank yaaaaaaaaaaay
I guess all of those $33 overdraft fees they pile on before they tell you that you are in the red has, as pooball says, paid off - oldhick, on 10/17/2008, -0/+4The problem isn't with stocks or our personal investments. The problem was the banks investing in CDO's and other complicated securities, as well as issuing subprime loans and bundling them into securities themselves. These securities had high risk and the banks weren't doing due diligence.
Plus it sounds like you're confusing investment banks and consumer banks. - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3I just deposited $2.00 today, golden bank here we come. Show me the money
- jmkiii, on 10/17/2008, -1/+4You are DISAPPOINTED?!
- leadingzero, on 10/17/2008, -1/+4I thought Wells Fargo was just an armored truck company. I've never actually seen a Wells Fargo branch before.
- Dumbledorito, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3The article's content really doesn't reflect the sycophantic marketing department "PR" type description. It talks about losses that the bank will have, that it's profits will be down, etc.
I'm amazed the submitter's name isn't "IhavestockinWesternUnion" or "WesternUnionBFF." - Aaronthethird, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Buried as inaccurate. My father works for Wells and I was really surprised when I read the headline; I figured something big must have happened. I then opened it up and realized that the article in fact says it will be the 4th largest bank behind Citi, JP Chase, and Bank of America when it acquires Wachovia. The headline is ridiculously misleading.
- Pooball, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3Hey, looks like those ridiculous overdraft fees finally got them somewhere! Way to go Wells... you make me so proud.
- Egoist, on 10/17/2008, -0/+3It's based in San Francisco, so it stretches only through the west. The Wachovia purchase will effectively make them a nationwide bank.
- pradaaddict, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2I have a friend who worked for Wells. 4 months ago they fired him and every other salesperson in his division. They then hired a bunch of juniors to manage their territories for $30,000 less. They fired a guy who was there for 25 years, just like that. My friend turned his territory from a $6million business to a $19m business in 4 years. Now all the clients are pissed at Wells and wont deal with the jokers they hired in everyones place and my buddy sued for wrongful dismissal, he won $32,000.
Wells is not a sterling example of a bank, if you want to see one of those you need to come and look at a Canadian bank. - JEWestbrookJR, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2More curious than horny.
- Escapade, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2That description was WAY too excited.
- inactive, on 10/17/2008, -2/+4Thanks for the help BIG GOVERNMENT, we sure do loves us some social corporatism!
- hokie47, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2What I don't understand is overdraft fees with debt cards. Just deny the purchase simple as that.
- AnacondaHL, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2It's even better if you know who BoA is (hot Korean pop singer).
- inigomntoya, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Which is probably why they are number one - they aren't wasting money in markets in which they don't belong.
I've said it before, and I will say it again: Wells Fargo FTW! - inactive, on 10/17/2008, -0/+2Of course he did, but only to keep his hands clean. It's all about maintaining positive public relations, so people will continue to look positively upon Wells Fargo after the bailout.
Do you think the same positive perception will exist for JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs and others who publicly favored the bailout? To his credit, he did what he needed to do as a CEO. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1A friend of mine who is into these things has been talking up Wells Fargo for a while. I didn't believe him, but maybe there's something to what he's been saying.
- hokie47, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah our government looking out for us again. We need clean house but unfortunately there are too many sheep that just don't care. Sometimes it feels like that They Live movie.
- algaeturd, on 10/17/2008, -4/+5Reads like a ***** viral ad for Wells Fargo. ***** banks. The big ones just robbed you of your child's inheritance.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1I'm not saying they aren't doing well. That much is clear. But that does not negate the fact that all banks are worried about runs on them and there is no legitimate news aspect of this "story" except self-serving PR.
- ElGstr, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo, is a simple, undereducated, preaching buffoon. He is half a baby step away from the homeless people who babble to themselves in the street. He may well be insane, it's hard to tell without seeing him in person. Just stop. Stop embarrassing yourself and go away. Far away. Far away where the terrorist landlords and second home rider fraudsters run free and loan officers illegally make-up loan applications and area managers fire honest loan officers and chase butterflies in fields of sunflowers. Go be with the terrorist loan officers and second home rider fraudsters, Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo. Let them pet your head and tell you the truth. Now go Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo, be free, be with your people. Run along sweet cheeks, run along. Good boy, good....
“Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo, you lookin' at me? You look' at me? Are you lookin' at me?" It's awesome. Not only is he dumb dumb, he’s totally looped Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo, you can't hide what you are and what you do. You are a sanctimonious psycho bitch. I think Bristol Palin’s retarded fetus is more qualified to be human or a loan officer than Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo is. Prudential Nevada Realty’s Keith W. Gledhill Mortgage Fraudster, are you trying to out-stupid yourself?! If so, mission accomplished boy! Go treat yourself to a Nazi pie! Reno’s Mortgage Fraudster Richard Vaughan, formally of Wells Fargo, if you send me a postage pre-paid 3 x 3 x 3 box, I'll mail you the ***** Eleanor and Gertrude produced on your fraudulent second home loan applications and fraudulent home loan applications. I can also send you a clump of their urine (complete with litter) if you like. Next person to call this dumb, crazy prick a dick will get a -1 on their comment from me. Take that, potty mouths.

El G - tarutaros, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I too read topless and rushed in, im dissapointed, now i have to go find some porn :3
- TBagwell, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1they've been trying to conquer the frontier for over 150 years
- NJank, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1i read some of that description as sarcasm. just me?
- aznpwnzor, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2and Wells Fargo isn't even nationwide
- pradaaddict, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1It happened in Canada and nobody in the media gives a rats ass about the casualties of the credit crunch
- EricSchC1, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1No they don't! 2 of my siblings and like 10 of my friends had college checking w/them and never got overdraft fees refunded...ever. Worse still, in the instances of error on the bank's part or a delay in their paycheck direct deposit process, Wells told them "well the money's not there, so we can't refund it." Wells passes all error-related fees onto their customers w/little or no remorse or consideration for who's error it was.
Thats what I meant in my reply to the first comment, above. Biggest? Maybe. Best? Thats laughable. - TVarmy, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I hate it, too. It should be an option, I'd rather be embarrassed and learn a valuable but free lesson on the spot about keeping a proper balance rather than having to see later on my statement.
I heard the congress was going to vote on a bill to require that be an available option, but I guess that didn't pass. - FrostyTheDMan, on 10/17/2008, -1/+2BS... if that had happened it would have been front page news in every paper / in every major city.
- JohnLawson, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Wells Fargo made to the top thanks to me, I'd like to think =). A single overdraft charge is in the neighborhood of 33 bucks, right? So I've definitely helped their cause.
-----EDIT-----
Damn, dieboldcracy beat me to the punch - mahadiga, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Banks? Quite Simple. Its Other Peoples Money.
- spoofer56, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Well, every Korean guy I know wants to see a topless BoA. Nothing comes when you google it.
- Icetype, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1I for one think BoA is an excellent singer.
- oldgal, on 10/17/2008, -0/+1Before we retired my husband and I worked respectively for BofA and Wells. We would put them about equal on the suck-o-meter. Both lost a lot of integrity and excellent management when they were bought out in the late 90s.
