- shinythings, on 02/18/2009, -1/+51Reminds me of AOL
- jonhen, on 02/19/2009, -1/+34This is a federal law . LendingTree MUST keep all account information "live" for seven years in order for any Fed investigator to see everything that pertains to it. This has to do with the fact LT is a mortgage lead generator. Your "account" with LendingTree is really just an application for a loan. And they are not allowed to "throw away" a loan application once it has been completed. You are free to stop using your account, but once you've filled out a loan application, and clicked all the "I Agree" stuff, by LAW they must keep it all available for any loan inspector to take a look at it. Same as with any bank, if you walked in and filled out a loan app, you can't go in two weeks later and see "Hey, give me the form back, I changed my mind".
And, this is not new at all. It's been in LendingTree's terms and conditions since 1999, when the company first started. No "Facebook" type deal whatsoever. - mickaloha, on 02/19/2009, -1/+27But they told me in the commercials that I WIN. I can't believe that is not true!
- ExSlashdotter, on 02/19/2009, -1/+24Show of hands:
Who here has ever found fraudulent charges on their credit card? (answer: me, and pretty much everyone i know)
Ever discovered that somebody has opened a new credit card in your name? (check. happened to a family member)
Its not paranoia. Its just reality. - Gr00ver, on 02/19/2009, -1/+24When banks compete, you get trapped forever.
- Vortex5, on 02/18/2009, -2/+24Thanks, now I'll know to stay away from them!
- justok, on 02/19/2009, -0/+20I don't think it was really Oskudacija that posted that comment. Someone probably hacked his account.
- smacksaw, on 02/19/2009, -0/+15Lending Tree are cat abusers. Seriously.
- voyetra8, on 02/19/2009, -0/+13Got a link to this handwritten addendum? I searched, and can't find any references to it.
- Mjeacoma, on 02/19/2009, -0/+11Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've created.
- tkeajax, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10Yea for some reason, I don't think 4chan will care about Lending Tree.
- Mjeacoma, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10I never did (knock on wood) but I'm not retarded like Oskudacija to just think it won't happen
what a douche - smacksaw, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9Please post your:
Real name
Home address
Social Security Number
Home phone number
I promise, no one will hack it. If you believe what you say, you will post it. Otherwise, retract your comment. - DirtyVicar, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9Reminds me of when I tried to close my account at Bank of America due to someone stealing my routing & account numbers and buying pr0n. I asked the branch manager if I'd be on the hook for any more charges hitting that closed account, and she mumbled and shrugged and said more charges would probably "wake up" the closed account and get posted. WTF? I "closed" all accounts and got all my money out that bank and went to a regional competitor. Whoever heard of being liable for activity on a closed account?
- chadsmith729, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8I used them like 2 years ago and I continually get mail from them. I tried to cancel my account and ran into the same problem. Finally I setup on my e-mail a filter to send their messages to Trash and to delete the trash on exit.
- NathanielJ, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8All I'm seeing here is that they kept a record of his request (which they must by law), and they are keeping his username and a hash of his password (not even the password itself). What the hell is the big deal? It doesn't look like they're keeping CC info or anything like that.
- awtripp, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8Do you not read the news? Credit card companies and others get hacked in to every couple months; hackers get away with thousands and thousands of people's account info.
Granted you're in the right place to be an uninformed douche bag, but ***** ***** man you're taking it to another level here. - JROXZ, on 02/19/2009, -1/+9I think a digg effect is needed to change the TOS like it did for FACEBOOK.
- JCEEZ, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8I worked at BofA as a teller when I was in college. Don't let the fact that they have a tie on fool you. 2 of the 3 managers were high-school drop outs and the other one took 2 years of Jr. College. Not to sound like an elitist or anything, people in a branch consumer bank are for the most part, not that smart.
- praisethelard, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8I'm gonna use that story next time someone sees my porn charges.
- kh99, on 02/19/2009, -0/+7I don't really want to be an ad for Citibank, but one faeture they do have is that I can go online and generate virtual card numbers with limits (both itme and amount).
Anyway, to the OP - the name "FreeCreditReport.com" should have tipped you off in the first place. - smacksaw, on 02/19/2009, -3/+10Seems to me that if they refuse to close the account after you ask (and document it) and some sort of fraud does happen, if you prove that you did best practises in securing your data elsewhere you could blame them. If someone got credit in your name, it would be up to them to prove the details were not in part from LendingTree if you sued them.
Who knows how many people may have already been compromised because of this? - TylerDuhrdan, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Called the bank and canceled the card, reported any attempted charges were without permission and can be prosecuted for theft of my card. My bank also refunded me any and all charges they tried/did charge my account.
5 minute phone call fixed freecreditreport.com
Then I called them and they tried to keep me, but I told them about my bank call, they stopped trying to charge me.
I now go to places like check cashing houses, etc and pick up disposable credit cards with the exact amount I need for online purchases of any kind. - StandardsDT, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Canceled my trial the day I signed up. For 5 minutes they tried to stop me but in the end they didn't. Any trials you sign up for use a Credit Card not a Debit. With Credit Cards you can have the Credit Card Company dispute the charges, debit you can't.
- ExSlashdotter, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Try canceling your free trial at FreeCreditReport.com
Good luck. Let me know how it turns out. I fought them for MONTHS back in 2003. - drmangrum, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Depends on the Bank. Some banks do allow you to dispute charges to a debit card.
- ralphthemagi, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6A lot of sites do this, including ones that you might not even think about with respect to privacy. Try to close a Yelp account (hint: you can't, you can only "hide" it permanently).
It's just extra work for these companies to go in and actually delete things, so they don't bother. - louiebaur, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6Yea totally
- TheSpook, on 02/19/2009, -0/+6I tried LendingTree about 4 years ago when we bought a house. It returned nothing but what appeared to be chop shop lenders. I wasn't impressed.
- StandardsDT, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5This happened with my zune social account. Accidentally deleted my Windows Live ID association and I couldn't login or anything. For, four months they told they can't delete it because they don't have the tools and denied my request to speak to Level 2 Support and even a Supervisor..
After talking to Brian Seitz on the zune team he got my profile information removed with in 3 days. So the page still exists but my information is gone now. I figured it was better then nothing. - NoLibertarians, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Why would anyone have a Lending Tree account?
- vspazv, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5Despite what a lot of people think the BBB is not a government agency. There are several other consumer agencies out there and it's actually up to the company to join the BBB or other agency. The BBB can't actually do anything other than give them a negative listing.
- tonyteetime, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5"You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave"
/cue guitar solo - UselessTrivia, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5They do have to keep records of his loan requests by law, but there is absolutely zero excuse for not allowing his account to be suspended. What a bunch of douchebags. This reminds me of the wednesday free-coupon newspaper that nearly everyone in my city gets. Doesn't matter if you want it or not, once it's begun delivery to your address there is simply no way to get off the mailing list.
- Razster, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5It's called a phone call to Better Business Bureau... That is how I had experian.com filed for poor customer support, not sending email with my username and password and charging me $14.95 for a free service after only a day of signing up.
BBB will have them remove your account and email you back saying they have resolved the issue and added the company to their bad listing. - Elranzer, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5When banks <do anything>, you never win.
- importfr87, on 02/19/2009, -1/+6Come on Digg, this guy is the new Dusty the cat, someone hack lendingtree...
- smacksaw, on 02/19/2009, -0/+5That's why I'm saying - if you prove you have followed best practises in protecting your information and you are still compromised, you would have a good case to lay blame on them and find out if they were culpable or not.
My ex-wife had her identity stolen and we still have no clue what happened, except it was something initiated online and then completed in-person with fraudulent ID. - CedEx, on 02/19/2009, -0/+4Just like my future sister-in-law who works in a bank. Dumb as rocks... but makes up for it by being good looking.
- forcedfx, on 02/19/2009, -1/+5Actually the burden of proof would be on you to prove that they leaked your information.
- NJank, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3sneakemail.com is your friend.
- Paranor01, on 02/19/2009, -0/+3Nice way for the troll to weave into an article that has 0% relation to the government, but makes it's statement to try to tie them together... what a moron... guess that's typical of trolls
- diggduggjoe, on 02/19/2009, -1/+4That appears to be the default setting at facebook. They told me my account will always be waiting for me in the future, even though I wanted it deleted.
We are beginning to see what it means to sign up at any website. That means that I will do less online in the future. Sites are hacked all the time, yet you will never be able to limit your exposure for every account you ever made throughout your lifetime will be perpetual. I am just glad I never used a site where I put in my SS# aside from a bank. - Mjeacoma, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2That is why I use a throw away email address and an alias on anything realestate related.....
- redfred18t, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2Seems normal that they would retain the information but let the guy cancel his damn account!
- krellor, on 02/19/2009, -0/+2While I agree that they should be able to disable the account, it seems to me the guy could just change the password to some huge string to pretty much make sure it will never be cracked.
- inactive, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2Try and close your paypal account. They are the same way. You cant even remove your credit card from their database.
- CedEx, on 02/20/2009, -0/+2That's ok... the future wife has been mistaken as her sister's twin regularly, but has a much better brain in between her ear sandwich.
