- app103, on 10/22/2008, -6/+64So when do they toughen their own standards and start paying their employees a living wage?
- d2002, on 10/22/2008, -6/+50Hey, I didn't know Wal-Mart had standards.
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -2/+44They already torture their suppliers, this should be interesting
- doiveo, on 10/22/2008, -1/+35They have the sway to make a difference if they choose. A development to watch.
- Andy.D, on 10/22/2008, -1/+26Translation: prices are going up, so here's one excuse as to why!
- AlaskaLoneWolf, on 10/22/2008, -7/+28...buried for being Wal-Mart meaningless PR spin.
- moredown, on 10/22/2008, -1/+20December, 2012
- JamesPDX, on 10/22/2008, -0/+14I call shenanigans
- nichesiteexpert, on 10/22/2008, -6/+18How about having some standards of care for your employees, Walmart? Even if your crap is better than before, I hate you for turning your employee workforce into an indentured slave class.
- GuyBatterson, on 10/22/2008, -7/+18Wal-mart has the balls to tell someone to increase their ethical standards?! What a ***** joke.
- charm803, on 10/22/2008, -4/+14If people want to get paid more, they should try finding a career.
Wal-Mart should be used as a stepping stone, not a career unless it's management.
They can go to school or find a better paying job. - chicagojack, on 10/22/2008, -1/+10agressive call in this financial marketplace
- Dumbledorito, on 10/22/2008, -1/+10They could also stop demanding products from manufacturers at lower and lower prices per unit every year, allowing said manufacturers to spend money on things like standards, etc.
Hey, crazy thought: Cutting back on demanded unit costs might not make so much manufacturing work go overseas. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -0/+8"even in banking"
ROFL, you do realize that pretty much all banks are connected nowadays? If you own a mortgage, you're already sending a majority of your money to a corporation. - ziggyone, on 10/22/2008, -2/+10Wal-mart is not going to pay more than they have to in a given area to employees (just like most other employers). Their employees agree to a work at a given price and if they do not like it, then they are free to look for other jobs. No employer should be forced to pay any minimum amount of wages. If someone is willing to work for next to nothing, then that is their decision not yours.
- emotecontrol, on 10/22/2008, -3/+11This just in: Wal-mart to demand that child labourers maimed in industrial equipment to be carried off the premises in a wheelchair instead of just being tossed over the wall.
"Wal-mart to toughen standards" is like saying "China to be more democratic." Fat chance that it'll amount to anything. If it does, no chance that it'll affect the bottom line. - LAmandingo, on 10/22/2008, -3/+11Maybe they should toughen their standards and only carry American products? 98% of the crap on their shelves is made in China.
- Tediel, on 10/22/2008, -7/+14I dont shop WalMart even if I have to pay more, I shop local all I can, even in banking. NO big corporations for me whenever it can be avoided.
- kingernoy, on 10/22/2008, -1/+7This could easily be an Onion headline.
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -0/+6"Walmart to demand even more of manufacturers, despite already already forcing prices so low they can barely survive and will crash if Walmart cancels their orders".
- lisaawesome, on 10/22/2008, -2/+8Quite right about the pay. WalMart pays better than Target. I'm no fan of WalMart but I think they catch an unfair share of *****. Also WalMart raises are a guaranteed amount every year. Target can give you nothing if they chose to (and at the local one they did this to all their employees this year).
- pintomp3, on 10/22/2008, -0/+5but then how will the walton family remain in the top 10 richest people? won't you please think of the list!
- morem, on 10/22/2008, -4/+9Here is what Wal Mart needs to do if it cares.
Start cleaning up their stores and their parking lots. They are trashing our cities. If they cleaned up their parking lots and stores our neighborhoods would be a better place for our kids.
Other retailers would have to follow suit because you can't have Wal Mart making you look bad, and thus Wal Mart would lead the way in cleaning up our cities. - pastathellama, on 10/22/2008, -4/+9Ive had my fair share of retail jobs.
Wal-mart pays there employees a lot more then Target does, which is hard to imagine.
I hate walking into Wal-mart stores, they are very trashy. Its going to take a lot more than this to get my business back. - inactive, on 10/23/2008, -0/+5Stricter standards doesn't mean much when you had few or none to begin with.
- adiyo011, on 10/22/2008, -1/+6Coming from the guys that keep shutting down Wal-Marts that try to start up work unions. Yeah w/e.
- shadomoon, on 10/23/2008, -0/+5I'm sorry, isn't this like shutting the barn door after the animals have got out?
- MikeMitchell, on 10/22/2008, -5/+9Just Read "Nickel & Dimed"
Wal Mart bends their employees over, inserts and repeats. Plain and simple. - gruvsf, on 10/22/2008, -1/+5Wal-mart does exactly what the managers in China who makes the products for Wal-mart. They try and cut corners where they can to boost profits. Wal-mart should be really looking at themselves as a company before they apply any "standards" to their suppliers. Leading by example pays dividends, but Wal-mart is hardly a standard bearer of any ethical "standards"
- amenhotep, on 10/22/2008, -2/+6don't offer only $15 for an item that you can sell for $100 in US, that'll better encourage the suppliers to make higher quality goods.
- Herostratus, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4Are you kidding? Pop the cork on that there bottle of champagne.
- secrity, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4There are still some independent local banks.
I use a credit union as a bank, the cu holds the home loans, they are not sold off. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -4/+8Do you want a cookie?
- HisTumness, on 10/22/2008, -1/+5Am I missing something or did you just answer your own question at the end there?
- bandoni, on 10/22/2008, -4/+8I work for wal-mart logistics and i make $18.00 an hour and work 40 hours a week. plus i have a 401k, profit sharing, quarterly incentives, health, dental, and life insurance. the stores don't pay all that well but there shipping depts are great places to work.
- Speed, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3No, but they force the manufacturer to make cheaper goods, and as such, they are forced to outsource to China, or risk losing Walmart as a retailer (which is almost a kiss of death now)
- Herostratus, on 10/22/2008, -3/+6Too little, too late.
I have a permanent boycott going on against Walmart which will continue until their lowest paid employee makes 2x min wage and all their goods are manufactured in the USA in order to offset the major economic damage they have wrought upon this country. - cubicledrone, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3You obviously know jack ***** about Wal-Mart. Look up Huffy Bicycles. 'nuff said.
- pHreaksYcle, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3@cubicleddrone:
"employee workforce" - pHreaksYcle, on 10/22/2008, -3/+6So, this is basically a statement admitting that they presently have no standards?
- mythicflux, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Here is an article I read a number of years back that discusses how Walmart works using Vlasic, Levi's, General Foods and Kraft as just a few example. This Jerrycurley proves that you sir truly are a ***** idiot. NEVER talk about Walmart again, because you make yourself look stupid when you do.
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/77/walmart.htm ...
And just so we are clear, this 7 page article provides a comprehensive breakdown of exactly how Walmart uses it's purchasing power and retail size to punish companies that don't play ball. - lisaawesome, on 10/22/2008, -6/+9lol I made 8.90 as a daytime employee in store 3275 in Edmond, OK and I was one of the lower paid folks because I had no previous experience. Cost of living is dirt here so I was makin decent money for a 19 year old kid. I think you sir are the one full of *****. Call up Mike Davis and see if he still remembers me. I love that people who have never worked there know so much about how the company operates. I'm not at all saying it is a saint but let's be reasonable folks. Yes they screwed me too over stupid ***** and it is why I quit but none of that had anything to do with my pay.
- publiclurker, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Credit unions are the way to go. Most of them do not resell their loans as they actually work for the benefit of their members. I've been in one for almost 20 years and it's never been stronger.
- bdpf, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Whoops! Wally World will unionize next!
- GovernmentsGun, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3This is on top of their $4 prescriptions, going solar at many of their stores, and giving premium shelf space to energy saving bulbs long before anyone else did.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again - businesses give the customer what they want. When enough customers express concern, they'll get it. - bipolarruledout, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3"Sure, I'll take a gift card...."
- LegomanArt, on 10/23/2008, -0/+3Wal-Mart can give you nothing if they choose. Also, I work for Wal-Mart and everyone I know that works at Target makes more than me.
In relation to the article: This cannot happen. The receiving of freight at Wal-Mart is too crazy, cramped, rushed and ran with too much lackadaisical authority for these "standards" to ever actually happen. -
