- PKBabaSoGud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Wal-Mart : Employment Policy :: Putin : Democracy
Chavez works too I suppose... - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Revenue is not Profit - Exxon still wins out on the profit side.
Walmart made $84Billion profit last year - Exxon made $164Billion profit.
I still can't understand why the Republicans rewarded Exxon with a tax cut!?!? - pintomp3, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9maybe now they can afford to stop making their employees turn to medicaid for health care.
- Stratochief66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4While I agree with the comments made by gehlm, however I'm tired of people stating that it is China's fault that the crap you buy is poorly made. The fact that it is cheaper not only stems from the fact that the labor cost far less in China, but from cheaper everything going into the product. If people demanded a higher quality product from China then China would create it. However, people today seem quite happy with disposable everything. By paying less up front they believe that they are getting a deal despite the fact that the product will almost certainly break down before a slightly more expensive higher quality counterpart would have.
China has no obvious disadvantage at creating a higher quality product, it may require slight retooling and re engineering of a product, but that isn't be a problem in the long run. If a higher quality product were demanded China and American manufacturers would arrive at near the same design, with the exception what the Chinese one would probably still be cheaper. - gehlm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You forgot...
4) Wal-Mart reports that it purchased $18 billion of goods from China in 2004 (1/10th of the U.S. trade deficit with China).
5) To do business with Wal-Mart, American manufacturers must lower prices to compete with imports.
6) American companies move manufacturing overseas and/or lower wages and benefits to remain profitable.
Bottom Line - The little money you make, you get to spend on cheep, poorly built Chinese products. - graberc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AWESOME that wal-mart is on top again!
great news from the American consumer and the 200M Chinese who have risen out of poverty thanks to companies like Wal-Mart. I salute them, they have done more then every religious group on the planet. . . - Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"The little money you make, you get to spend on cheep, poorly built Chinese products."
Like my iPod, HP printer, DVD burner, external harddrive, mouse, etc? I've not had a single QC issue with any of these products and I use them every single day. All made in China, all bought at Wal-Mart. And if I did have any problems I know that it would be very easy to do an exchange or refund. Sounds like a win-win to me. - Arcnite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Smileys cost 99 cents each.
- EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's a problem when you bring in more than you put out. Trade deficit is not good.
- aldeazel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is Wal Mart good for America? Let's breakdown what WMT provides:
1) It provides products to consumers (at low cost)
2) It employs workers (If it is a low paid job, workers can leave if they find a better job)
3) It pays taxes (shareholders pay also taxes when they receive dividends)
At least, nothing is wrong with Wal Mart. - quomen, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Before you guys start blindly bashing walmart,
here's an intersting Penn and Teller ***** episode to watch.

It's "$351 billion" or "351 billion dollars", using both $ and the world "dollars" doubles up, so you're effectively writing "three hundred and fifty one billion dollars dollars", which of course makes no sense whatsoever. - jakster4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ban Walmart already!
- taintedzodiac, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Smileys cost 99 cents each."
Wow! They're a full dollar everywhere else! Thank God for Low Prices, Always! - DearDearDarla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else remember Wal*mart's motto back when the company first started going national?
Hmm, I'll submit an oldie. - ubuntuedgy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wal-Mart treats its employees well. I don't know where you people get your info. Sure, I am certain they have had issues (like every other company) but I worked for them while a student and was paid better there than anywhere else (why I worked there). That included medical. I injured myself on the job (muscle strain) and was immediately referred to a doctor (on the clock) and taken care of quickly. No cost to me. Not $1 out of my pocket.
I understand why people bash Wal-Mart and I agree with much of it, but get the facts straight. - Scaryclouds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man do you see there profit margins? Less than 3%! I don't know about other businesses but to me that seems like a pretty thin operating margin.
- dumbblah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exxon will have to raise gas prices to catch back up.
- Szandor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"I still can't understand why the Republicans rewarded Exxon with a tax cut!?!?"
I can. It's called being greedy *****. - sicapitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It seems like a very honest doco. Having spent a lot of time in guangdong, I can say its on the money so to speak. I do think the doco should be called 'is Wal-Mart Good for the World?' though. "For now yes.." answers do not apply.
- S201, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's also turning over our hard earned money to a communist nation.
Importing goods from China (or any country for that matter) takes money out of our economy and damages it no matter which way you look it at. - timta2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Um, that is how it is no matter where you work. If you are injured on the job they take care of it. Sometimes a drug test follows.
- sicapitan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I might add, its not wal-mart. Apple do it, Coles-Myer do it. K-mart do it. And I wish the doco was down loadable ;)
- jsffive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Walmart sells How many products?
Exxon sells only ONE product, with a few variations.
Gas isn't cheap for anyone who's poor. Walmart provides cheap products...
Anyone out there who wants to make an assertion that Walmart does horrible things to get their products to people for cheap, I would only say to them, "Look in the mirror" the next time they fill up.
............. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Which is to say you're one of the following:
1) Full-time which probably means management
2) Have no health insurance
3) Care about nothing else in the world (like food and shelter) and pay your own health insurance - JamesBondage, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I work for Wal-Mart and am not on Medicaid. Glad we topped the lost maybe now my stock will go up!
- jt32470, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2This is the reason why WAL-MART is doing so well
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/walmart/view/
Link above is a PBS documentary showing how WAL-MART not only kills small businesses, but also how they're taking everything to China from manufacturing/shipping/logistics
If you have the time watch the documentary very good like the rest of the frontline episodes
I'm sure there are torrents of it, i just don't know of them. I wish PBS followed the CBC's example,
and offer television programs by torrent . - luckynas, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2yo NOTHING WRONG With getting stuffs from china
this is free market
thats why its called a business
its all about profit making
