- eddied007, on 12/29/2007, -0/+32What happens if I purchase another computer and would like to use it to play my videos?
You cannot play your videos on another computer. You can only play your videos on the computer you used to download the video files.
Gotta love DRM! - mptsxtps, on 12/29/2007, -4/+27Wal-Mart had a movie download service?
- chugger1992, on 12/29/2007, -3/+20[obligatory Wal-Mart bash comment]
- ChazPSE, on 12/29/2007, -1/+18First Google video and now Walmart.....how many times do I have the same buy the same movie?
- scabbers, on 12/29/2007, -0/+13Killed by its own DRM. People want to want to watch movies on their TV, and especially not buy ones locked to a 'disposable' item like a PC.
- inactive, on 12/29/2007, -2/+14If only there was some way i could download movies and music without the DRM..... *sigh*
- goofygarber, on 12/29/2007, -1/+13Not shocked, but interesting nonetheless. If only Netflix watch-now had a wider selection, that would be the perfect online movie solution.
- jaytek13, on 12/29/2007, -2/+9Good or bad, I'd never even heard of this service.
- peestandingup, on 12/29/2007, -4/+11Actually, this is good news. Wal-Mart seems to think they will do better (make a lot more money) selling physical discs in their stores. Insuring they will be left out of the online video revolution & wont get any of my money, just like they did with music downloads.
Adapt or fail. Hopefully for Wal-Mart, it will be the latter. - V0lk, on 12/29/2007, -1/+8well, since they don't prosecute for shoplifting under $20 in their stores, and they have cheap DVDs, can't we just go into our local store and help ourselves now? it's the same thing.
- pandatacular, on 12/29/2007, -0/+5they don't? my weirder than life cousin shoplifted pencils [and not even the clicky kind] from there and had to do community service, etc.
- zweben, on 12/29/2007, -1/+6I believe we're on #9.
- V0lk, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4yeah, a while back, an internal Wal-mart memo got leaked onto the net, instructing stores not to bother with anyone shoplifting who shoplifts less than $20 worth of merchandise....because by the time they pay their loss prevention employees and others (court costs, legal dept.etc) they would lose MORE money than if they just let the $20 merchandise walk......take that as you will.
- saisumimen, on 12/29/2007, -0/+4Always.
- MattInChicago, on 12/29/2007, -2/+5Oh, I remember this! All the Windows fanboys were claiming this was going to kill iTunes, Apple, or something. yeah, that's right!
- RawOysters, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3They seem to portray that it is uncertain why it wasn't the success that they thought it would be. DRM is the anchor that takes all these services to the bottom. They know and everybody else knows it. Just come out and SAY IT! DRM is a failure.
- x2wenty4x, on 12/29/2007, -0/+3yes, blame DRM. I can't speak for everyone, but I would never invest money in DRM content. Nothing guarantees I will be able to play that content years down the line. And having to load proprietary software such as iTunes in order to play them is unacceptable. That limits the platform and ways I can watch the content. The only successful movie download service will have to be DRM free.
- hamdogger, on 12/29/2007, -1/+4no, you can deauthorize and reauthorize computers as you upgrade.
- BlueStarr, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2So much for the iTunes killer....HA
Another one bites the dust..... - skyfire1, on 12/29/2007, -1/+3He would leave it up to the state.
- asiegrist, on 06/20/2009, -0/+2I agree. I did one of their trials and loved it, both the movies in the mail and the watch-now movies.
- PorkFat, on 12/29/2007, -2/+4I think the main factor is that Wal-Mart customers are not online video customers.
- bot001220, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2Did you not read "If only there was some way i could download movies and music without the DRM..... *sigh*" to which he replied to?
- Elranzer, on 12/29/2007, -0/+2:-) ™
- saisumimen, on 12/29/2007, -2/+3Not all of us have the luxury of living at home with our parents on unmonitored networks.
- mustang460, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1they dont make any money on the discs them selves, they price them as cheap as possible to get you inside the stores, ever wonder why the electronics dept. are so far away from the front doors at every store?
this is so you'll see other products and buy them while after there cheap electronics/movies - fkr3, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2Busy week!
- pandatacular, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1wow - i'll pass the word along to my favorite delinquents... heh
- db113456, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1And how does that play out in this case ?
- skews13, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2yeah,but we got low,low prices
- drlha, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2Yeah, netflix would be awesome, if only it worked on something other than Windows.
- millejos, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1I know someone who worked on the HP side of this, and it was a fiasco from start to finish. Only HP could screw up an opportunity this big. (wal-mart) My personal opinion is that HP management is more to blame than the DRM scheme.
- wattersm, on 12/29/2007, -1/+2First of all, they're not insuring anything. The word you're looking for is "ensuring", as in to guarantee or to assure.
- infinityanant, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1DRM was the crappiest thing i ever heard its better it is being abolished now.
- KJSSJK, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1Doesn't surprise me - the target demos of Walmart didn't seem to jive incredibly well with the digital movie buying market.
- roberto_deneero, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Did they ever have a download service???
- MofugginPaulrus, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1That's brilliant
- supermanred, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Nobody cares.
- supermanred, on 12/29/2007, -0/+1Another iTunes killer and another flushing noise a year later.
- down4twenty, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1just download it to the new computer
- Born4Surf, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1The cost of a movie download from sites such as http://www.vizumi.com need to be reduced in order to attract users who get illegal downloads at no cost. At the same time, the more people who use legal sites, the more competition in this market will increase leading to download prices dropping. Walmart obviously didn't want to hang around but websites such as Vizumi, AOL, Empire etc are the best sites and are 100% legal and safe. If you get caught downloading via a file sharing website such as Limewire then you could face imprisonment and personally will not take this risk for the sake of saving a few £ and now use legal download sites.
The more of us who do this, the more chance of price reductions and an end to illegal downloads. - salserinpelao, on 12/30/2007, -0/+1Recien me entero que el servicio existia. :)
- pinina73, on 12/31/2007, -0/+1interesting. Thanks for sharing
- acidbathfan, on 12/29/2007, -1/+1none of wal-marts digital services will never take off and here's why. There is a level of trendiness, coolness, and band wagon jumping that is associated with nearly everything that goes on online other wise it dies off or becomes the stomping ground for losers and know nothings........ Wal-mart is neither trendy, cool, or a bandwagon someone including your mom or grandmother ever wants to be on.
However the myspaces, yahoos, aol's, mp3.coms, napsters, angelfires, limewires, geocities, kazaa's, netscapes, etc. of the world all at one time or another were either trendy, cool, or a bandwagon people wanted to be on before they imploded into obscuirty or the realm of "I can't believe you still use that crap". - VeganG, on 12/29/2007, -1/+1"if only it worked on something other than Windows."
At least something other than IE. - VeganG, on 12/29/2007, -2/+2What does that have to do with anything? Grow some balls.
- anarpi, on 12/30/2007, -0/+0who buys things at wal-mart online if you CAN find one near your house anyway, its better to have the original dvd, then digital format
- fuckinhell, on 12/29/2007, -1/+1So what happens if I don't want a mac? Or if you buy a new Mac every 2 years. In 10 years all your movies stop working?
