WSJ.com - Massive Outlay of Ads No Longer in Vogue

online.wsj.com — As September issues begin hitting the newsstands, two-thirds of the 16 top fashion and beauty magazines by number of ad pages are smaller than a year ago. Most magazine executives aren't optimistic about a turnaround. Vogue has 674 pages of ads this year, down 7%, while Hearst's Cosmopolitan is six pages, or 3.2%, lighter.

  • WiretapStudios, on 08/12/2008, -0/+2No. Even though newspapers are going in the *****, and mags may be down (I don't think they all are), nothing beats holding a book or a magazine in your hands. It's tangible. I doubt I would use a free Kindle, and I read tons of books.

    For example: Reading PDF's of design magazines I buy is much lamer than having the actual magazine.

  • cadmiumpaint, on 08/12/2008, -1/+3so i guess nobody understands the larger issue here....ads are the #1 revenue source for magazines. When ads drop, magazines start to fail. Its why Life Magazine went away.

    The $ spent on magazine ads cannot be replaced by internet ads so there stands to be a huge economic impact that will effect everyone if this whole system starts to collapse.

    And now a days, with those self-serve lanes, that habit may soon prove to be a thing of the past.
