- AremRed, on 11/17/2009, -0/+16Imagine how much more profit will be made by telecom companies/ISP's if they can shut down net neutrality. Do we really need to be giving these companies bigger profit margins?
- hays, on 11/17/2009, -0/+14The graphic implies that these companies are especially clustered, but that's not really the case.
2/3rds of the fortune 500 are in 10 states? Well, so are 53% of Americans. - elcalrissian, on 11/16/2009, -1/+15FTA: Top industries by Profit:
1. Network and Communication Equipment
2. Internet services and Retailing
3. Pharmaceuticals
4. Medical Products & Equipment
5. Railroads
6. Financial Data and Services
7. Mining & Crude Oil Production
8. Securities
9. Oil & Gas Equipment/Services - subtheorist, on 11/17/2009, -0/+11Not exactly. The source says "Profits based on % of total revenue".
It just means that the bank's money is yielding a higher return. Make no mistake - The oil companies are making more money. Just spending more in order to get it. - ruarctb, on 11/17/2009, -2/+7People die from lack of healthcare. People do not die from lack of broadband.
- Taiyoryu, on 11/17/2009, -0/+5Net neutrality supporter here: there's nothing wrong with large profit margins. It's large profit margins at the expense of the consumer or of the industry as a whole that is bad. Less competition and less openness is destructive to both.
- joe2100, on 11/17/2009, -4/+9This infographic kinda sucks
- thecoolestguy, on 11/17/2009, -1/+4---Or, we could give more corporate welfare and lobbyists to these companies. That's making us really competitive, right?---
Oh yes, the only alternative to not taxing the rich is to give them corporate welfare. Very logical rebuttal.
You know, it was the "teabaggers" that the leftist corporate media made so much fun of that protested the 700,000 million$ (700 billion$) corporate welfare package more than any one else. The leftists, who supposedly hate big greedy corporations, stood by and obeyed the Democratic party leadership. - thecoolestguy, on 11/17/2009, -1/+4Except in east Asia, right?
- tastybbq, on 11/17/2009, -2/+5Go Texas Instruments!
- TedTschopp, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3What's interesting about it is that there are a lot of companies that are in the metro areas of the large cities (think Los Angeles) that are not in the city limits. It would be interesting to see this chart done by county or by Zip code, or just a X/Y plot against a map.
- govtdoesnotwork, on 11/17/2009, -2/+5You're seeing corporatism fail to work, yet you're calling the corporatist big-governmet failure "capitalism." That's a sure recipe for future failures, but believe it if you want to think words & definitions aren't important. After all, an honest guy like Michael Moore couldn't POSSIBLY have a partisan-Democrat agenda served by turning a word into NewSpeak, right??
- joe159, on 11/17/2009, -0/+3they should do it my metro area, not city proper, there are a lot of fortune 500 companies in the chicago suburbs, aparently only 9 in the city proper. but with 32 in illinois, im betting atleast 20 of them are in the chicago suburbs. of the top of my head i know abbott labs, motorolia, kraft and allstate are in the chicago suburbs.
- smacksaw, on 11/17/2009, -0/+2As an adopted Washingtonian, seeing Boeing in the Illinois section of the infographic really stings. Between the unions, Chris Gregoire and general apathy we are ruining this state. We should have been thinking about how to be added to that list, not subtracting ourselves from that list. When you put it in perspective, losing Boeing really hurts. Killing the goose that laid the golden egg...bending over for Boeing is better than losing them.
- thecoolestguy, on 11/17/2009, -1/+3Oh yes, taxing corporations more so their earnings are decreased, and they have less capital for investment, is how you ensure that American industry grows rapidly and creates more wealth for America in the future.
Thank for you showing that great leftist/Democrat logic at work again /s - BradGroux, on 11/17/2009, -1/+3Houston FTW!
- smacksaw, on 11/17/2009, -1/+3Or, we could give more corporate welfare and lobbyists to these companies. That's making us really competitive, right?
It's intellectually dishonest to point out that business taxes support "spongers" when these businesses are the biggest welfare moms of all. - 04svt, on 11/17/2009, -2/+4which is great! Because he just gave a company millions of dollars for that yacht. Which means they need more boats to sell and more people to make boats! JOBS!!! And now there is more opportunity for it to get fixed and buy parts for other companies, get gasoline, higher people to maintain it like painting it and cleaning it ( more jobs) then when you throw mass parties your spending money at other places to just have fun on it! And the list probably goes on and on. The rich are great! The worst thing a rich man can do is hold all of his money for no reason, instead of buying things for no reason! Doesnt matter what they buy as long as they do. Trickle down baby!
- LordBacon, on 11/17/2009, -0/+11 and 2 work so great in Canada :/
- apollomurga, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1and internet companies say they don't have the money to expand the performance of their services? the speed here is ***** compared some other countries...
- LoneStarLizard, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Companies seem to be clustered in the most populous states. no surprise here.
- Nerfdude, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1I'll shamelessly digg anything that points out St. Louis on a map.

- zoomer123, on 11/17/2009, -0/+1Amtrak does sort of compete with Union Pacific.
Each industry gets it own unique amount of scrutiny. The Internet mostly takes on telecommunications and banking. Demographically, hippies/treehuggers like to blame the oil, pharma, and Monsanto for all their problems.
Government takes part in a certain industry because they feel that the private sector can't really help (pre-existing condition, being a clear cut example of a profit motive). Corporations were originally, for the public good. But things change.
Kind of like Finland which is large welfare state, the government holds 40% of the market share in wine and 60% in hard liquor. They don't, however, get involve with telecommunications because Nokia is doing a pretty good job with that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altia - kinerry, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1all optimum data inc in omaha does is sell ***** used routers and they make millions each month with less than a 30 staff.
- elcalrissian, on 11/16/2009, -5/+5My own take?
While we demonize Healthcare (#3 and 4) and demand the government to help us pay for them, we only complain about 1 and 2.
Why havent we asked the government to control telecommunications? I believe, that like access to health services, communication is a basic human right.
Also:
Banks (#6 and 8) take more of our money than Oil companies (#7 and 9). Once again, the government wants to be a part of one, but not the other. - inactive, on 11/17/2009, -2/+2All corrupt!
- zoomer123, on 11/17/2009, -1/+1Tax more?! They don't even pay tax in the first place. And they still complain and some of them even asked for bailouts!!!
http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSN124946 ...
You think the Fortune 500 wants more competition?! Ha. - starkerspiel, on 11/17/2009, -2/+2You know what's even better? Instead of hundreds of thousands of people giving millions of dollars to one firm, which hypothetically bought the CEO a boat and employed 40 people, what if that money was given two a whole bunch of smaller firms, strengthening the economy by promoting competition and employing EVEN MORE people?
- bonoboho, on 11/17/2009, -5/+3buried for the entitlement attitude. nobody owes you anything. earn it.
- faizal5k, on 11/17/2009, -5/+3Too bad capitalism doesn't work the way YOU want it to coolguy
- dengzhi, on 11/17/2009, -3/+1lame graphic
- thecoolestguy, on 11/17/2009, -12/+6We need more taxes on these companies to pay for poor people's health insurance. That will make American industry more competitive /s
