- Twistedd, on 03/13/2009, -0/+272Here is another take on a Trillion.
http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html
A look at what the actual amount of money looks like. - mibi, on 03/13/2009, -2/+162These graphics are sweet and informative for sure, but unless something is present in the following format, "X times to the moon and back", I simply fail to comprehend.
- masamunecyrus, on 03/13/2009, -1/+159One United States Dollar bill is 2.61 inches wide, 6.14 inches long, 0.0043 inches thick.
Place them end-to-end. 6.14 inches times $10,957,076,608,879.93 (current natl debt) = 11.42 AU. That can wrap around the Earth 2,986 times, stretch from Earth past Saturn, or from here to the moon and back 2482 times.
Stack them one on top of each other, 0.0043 inches times $10,957,076,608,879.93 (current natl debt) = 0.8 AU. That can go from Earth to the moon 333 times, or half the distance from here to Mars. - BlackOculus, on 03/13/2009, -1/+1341 trillion dollars could also buy 1 trillion jr. bacon cheese burgers.
- HotSaucePanCake, on 03/13/2009, -3/+111how many Boats n Hoes can I get with $1T?
- tschau, on 03/13/2009, -2/+70The closing line... "1 Trillion dollars is enough to pay for 1/10th of the spending for the current bailout."
wait what? This is the first time I've heard 10 trillion dollars stated as the bailout cost. Where are they getting that number? - radison2, on 03/13/2009, -0/+58I am still unable to visualize one trillion dollars.
- kinneys, on 03/13/2009, -1/+56For a science assignment back in 1983, my father had an interesting idea. The assignment was to visually represent 1 million of anything. My dad who was a programmer for Xerox since '68, had an idea. He wrote a program in COBOL to display the numbers in print. We used continuous form paper, the old extra wide kind with the colored lines. The kind found in data centers for many years.
In the end, to print all the numbers one to one million required an entire box of paper, about 1 foot high. Even the science teacher was amazed at the visual effect of 1 million, even though it was simply numbers on a page.
Think about the space required to store 1,000 boxes of paper. This would represent 1 Billion. The size of a small room.
Finally, one trillion would require 1,000 of the little rooms. A small high rise building.
Remember just little size 10 font numbers crammed on a page.
A small high rise building full of paper.
One word: Yikes.
- Absyrd2, on 03/13/2009, -0/+54the last illustration was sorta disturbing
- slapded, on 03/13/2009, -0/+455,000 of these stacks my friend
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MwXyzNh1H5Y/RqkXViwsQCI/ ... - naatari, on 03/13/2009, -0/+42I think this was better for "visualizing" $1T.
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -4/+44That's the cost of all of the federal debt, right back up to Ronald Reagan. They're twisting the figures.
- ultraJesus, on 03/13/2009, -1/+36I'm Ron Burgandy?
- slapded, on 03/13/2009, -4/+38i ***** a mermaid.....
- Barackalypse, on 03/13/2009, -1/+33All of them.
- warnockworld, on 03/13/2009, -0/+32This shows it pretty well
http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html - RobynG7, on 03/13/2009, -1/+32"EVEN ASTRONOMERS have hardly any use for such an insanely massive number."
***** lol - cquilliam, on 03/13/2009, -1/+31Now that's informative!
So, do you have a script that calculates this stuff for you just laying around in case someone asks? - radison2, on 03/13/2009, -0/+29THAT is visualization!!! Thank you!
- ketedford, on 03/13/2009, -3/+29One Trillion Dollars would NEVER reach the sun! It would burn up WAAAYYYY before it got there! This article is all lies!
- tschau, on 03/13/2009, -3/+28No, Phalanxia is right... it's the cost of all total public debt the U.S has ever accrued. A frightening number, but it is most definitely not "the bailout cost."
These guys just lost a lot of their credibility. - kinship, on 03/13/2009, -1/+24haha suddenly living in australia seems cheap
- BlackOculus, on 03/13/2009, -0/+23ITS MY MONEY AND I NEED IT NOW!
- jmritchie, on 11/10/2009, -6/+28that is awesome
- wolfeater2, on 03/13/2009, -5/+27were all *****
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -1/+22cool story bro
- ajhaji, on 03/13/2009, -0/+20Why are there 30 days in February?
- Munky, on 03/13/2009, -13/+33I think this does a much better job of "visualizing" what a trillion looks like:
http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html - teemingvoid, on 03/13/2009, -0/+19I can't compete with moon slash dollar math but here's a visual of 1 man versus 1 trillion dollars (in 100 dollar bills):
http://www.pagetutor.com/trillion/index.html - tyran, on 03/13/2009, -0/+19enough to run fed govt for 103 day? wow, our govt spends alot money!
- loobis, on 03/13/2009, -2/+20I like the story, but your dad totally did your homework for you.
- ron7852, on 03/13/2009, -0/+17That is way better than the article imo, it really puts loot into perspective.
- jdmonmou, on 03/13/2009, -0/+16That 11 weeks of vacation sounds very nice.
- naatari, on 03/13/2009, -1/+17FYI, 6 comments up ^
- drr104, on 03/13/2009, -1/+16Remember bigger numbers would need more paper. Most of the numbers up to one trillion are much longer than 6 digits, so I think you'd need much much more paper than 1,000 little rooms worth :)
- maabus, on 03/13/2009, -0/+141 trillion dollars will get you into 1 million girl's panties at least 10 times.
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -0/+13http://tinyurl.com/d2rvy8
As you can see, that's the cost of the total public debt, since forever. NOT just the bailout. - feignNU, on 03/13/2009, -0/+1211.42 AU end to end. That is insane. That means it would take LIGHT almost an HOUR AND A HALF to travel the distance of our debt lined up like this.
- fuzzybutton, on 03/13/2009, -0/+12Another way of looking at one trillion dollars is to put it into seconds. Not exact but so close. One million seconds would take 11 days. One billion seconds would take 31 years. One trillion seconds would take over 31,500 years. The 60 seconds it would take for this comment to be saved is of course 1 minute.
- eramos, on 03/13/2009, -2/+14Luckily, no other species have territorial wars or fight over resources. Damn humans.
Perhaps what is wrong with our species is that we think we're so unique and unanimal-like. - UnFriendlyFire, on 03/13/2009, -0/+12I think that might be the whole point of the article.
- JackpotCity, on 03/13/2009, -1/+13I enjoyed the illustration more than the subject matter.
- orubinstein, on 03/13/2009, -3/+141 Trillion dollar is what it took the Obama administration less than 50 days to spend.
- alpha88, on 03/13/2009, -1/+12I think that's actually more shocking.
@cquilliam: It's basic math if you look up some values. - bamatime, on 03/13/2009, -0/+11infographic is a real word.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_graphics
don't be afraid of words, they help describe things and *****. - firebhaal, on 03/13/2009, -0/+10No data set is complete without knowing its moon distance factoid.
- kinneys, on 03/13/2009, -0/+10Most of time I did my own homework, until high school anyways. This happened to be one of the weekends he was sober, so that worked out good for me.
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -0/+9I can send you a pic of myself, so you can see the result of one trillion JBC's
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -1/+10but now we're ok?
- inactive, on 03/13/2009, -0/+9That's actually a hundred trillion dollar bill.
