- elliotys, on 02/09/2009, -4/+74It's all going to that stupid lady with the octuplets.
- REBECCAFRIEDMAN, on 02/09/2009, -1/+41This is very sad news. When you get laid off, unemployment is often that critical difference between being able to pay the bills while you find your next gig. Without it, we will probably see a lot of people really suffer. Scary times.
- klo015, on 02/10/2009, -7/+37Welfare policies are only "stupid" until you yourself need them....
- Gnarstache, on 02/10/2009, -0/+27great just what I wanted to read after finding out that I am losing my job in two weeks 1 hour ago
- maz2331, on 02/10/2009, -2/+25In a few years, Social Security will do the same thing, and crater the entire economy into something that makes the 1930's look like the good old days.
- trafficlight, on 02/10/2009, -4/+22Where the ***** does the money go that gets taken out of my paycheck every month? The part that specifically says UNEMPLOYMENT.
I thought the whole point was you only received the amount you put in? Where is my part going? - klo015, on 02/10/2009, -0/+18Lots of people are already suffering without it. Here in southern Cali, it is so ridiculously hard to even get through the phone lines to file a claim (and calling is the only way to file a claim in many circumstances) that I would have an easier time calling into a radio contest and winning their prize than to actually try to collect unemployment benefits. After spending many many wasteful hours trying to file a claim I, along with many others just gave up.
- radiofrequency, on 02/09/2009, -16/+34If Americans could pay fewer taxes and cost of living was lower, they'd be able to save for a rainy day and we wouldn't need massive bureaucracies full of lazy government bureaucrats drawing fat salaries for "managing" all these stupid welfare policies on our behalf.
- jase08, on 02/10/2009, -1/+17Billions of dollars already spent on bailouts to large corporations so top execs can pay themselves big bonuses. No money left for the unemployed. Sorry.
- imasuperDOTcom, on 02/10/2009, -0/+16unemployment is a real blessing to people who genuinely need it and don't abuse it. Almost 4 years ago I up and lost my job out of nowhere. I was incredibly concerned about my family and our welfare, having just purchased a home. I applied for unemployment insurance the next day.
I received my money in the form of a debit card with less than300$ on it. Fortunately, I was only out of a job for a week before finding another one (I tried pretty hard), but that 300$ made the groceries and car payment easier that month. To be fair, this was almost 4 years ago when the economic circumstances were MUCH better - but I always wondered how people could sit on that 300$ a week for months at a time. Right now it's different though.
Just sharing. - mparker21311, on 02/10/2009, -4/+19It's all going to the big bankers and auto companies all after spending trillions in Iraq.
- phrenzy, on 02/10/2009, -2/+17Wow, good for you, Superman. Living off of your girlfriend. Real nice. And if you couldn't do that? I guess you'd just suck it up and start living on the street right?
People pay into unemployment INSURANCE so they can be covered when they become unemployed, and you have the nerve to talk ***** about them when they fall on hard times and USE IT?
You Republicans are a real ***** ray of sunshine in the world. /s - ethanji22, on 02/10/2009, -1/+16To pay for 8 new kids, the war, and to banker bonuses...
- snotrokit, on 02/10/2009, -0/+13I've been out since Thanksgiving. Hang in there, and do whatever you can to make a few bucks. Unemployment doesn't even cover the rent\mortgage. If you can, go grab some short term contract work, but the bottom line, is get out there NOW and hustle your ass off. It sucks really really bad out here.
- InfiniteNothing, on 02/10/2009, -3/+15Why not have both a "rainy day" saving account and a government safety net?
In any case, the people who need it most are those who are living paycheck to paycheck. Those people are already in lower income tax brackets. Lowering taxes more won't help them that much. - inactive, on 02/10/2009, -1/+12Good luck at rainy day funds when US Economics absolutely requires you to spend every last dollar you have on "stuff".
- inactive, on 02/10/2009, -4/+15It would help if people just realize that they arnt going to get the same job again. After the dot.com bubble burst, I took several crap jobs before I ended up with the one I have, which I may lose if things get much worse. Stop using up every last bit of unemployment before you finally get off your ass and take resume submissions seriously. Stop applying for jobs that you know you'll never get because you need something to log each week.
And I only say this because my future brother in law hasnt had a job in 20 months and doesn't take things seriously. He's in debt to the tune of 90k, has a kid on the way and spends most of his day playing WoW. Take a WILD freaking guess as to what political ideology he worships (in a very creepy way). - akchrs, on 02/10/2009, -3/+14Actually unemployment insurance is taken out of your paycheck. It's not charity, you pay into it.
- klo015, on 02/10/2009, -1/+12dude, don't think that was the first thing I tried? you can only file online in some circumstances, but for other circumstances (for example, if you've worked outside the state at all in the past 18 months) you can only file by calling.
- ethanji22, on 02/10/2009, -1/+12Your employer pays it. You don't see it in your check. It is paid by the company you work for... It makes employing people more expensive and takes away from maximum available pay the employer can give to their employees.
- TrAzE28, on 02/10/2009, -6/+16Well Dems and Reps can fight until benefit money ends. . . then there will be a real problem. . .
I can see it now. . .riots. . .martial law. . . New World Order - northwatuppa, on 02/09/2009, -19/+29I'll bet the GOP fights any and all efforts to improve unemployment benefits tooth and nail.
- imasuperDOTcom, on 02/10/2009, -0/+10Reminds me of Vegas Vacation when Eddie has been looking for a job for over a year because "He's holding out for a management position".
lol. - yerlordnsaveyer, on 02/10/2009, -1/+11sorry dude(tte). wish i could help. here, have a digg :(
- zizzybaloobah, on 02/09/2009, -8/+18I sure we would all be more supportive of the supposed 'stimulus' if more money went to help people who lost (or will lose) their jobs rather than wasteful spending. The current stimulus will actually make matters worse according the Congressional Budget Office http://digg.com/politics/Congressional_Budget_Offi ...
- snogye, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9Unfortunately, the world's markets are inextricably tied. So the economic trends follow the U.S.
- BlatheringIdiot, on 02/10/2009, -1/+10Suffer?, nah- they'll just turn to crime.
Start with the New York bankers, please. - shupy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+10This is a complete falacy. Why on earth do you people keep swallowing this crap.
The CBO analysis is based entirely on a review of historical data on program performance, giving little or no weight to assurances from the White House, federal agency directors, governors, and state officials that normal operating procedures will not be followed, and that funds appropriated for programs in this stimulus package will flow much more rapidly than in the past. Yet there is ample evidence that state and local officials have been preparing for months for the rapid obligation of these funds. It is also clear that officials at all levels have made strong and credible public commitments to cut through red tape to expedite these expenditures.
But then again, maybe you all would be happier if we did nothing. - str1, on 02/10/2009, -0/+9Very sad, and scary.
- Tyrghast, on 02/10/2009, -0/+8200 bucks a week for groceries for two people? Dude I grew up in a family of 5, we didn't even spend that much a week. Maybe if we splurged and bought extra for a coming up week we did, but generally we tried to keep it at 25-30 bucks a head, per week.
Eat lots of sandwiches, they're cheap. - DangerCollie, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7I think here unemployment caps out at around $200/week. We spend more than that on groceries, just two of us. Pathetic.
My opinion was that unemployment should be more like insurance. Income and length of employment should make a difference on your premium. And the more you use it the higher the premium. So, over time, the chronically unemployed find their premiums getting more expensive. And step down the benefits instead of cutting them off. Give them a little more money the first couple months and then scale it down. Provides incentive to get out there and find another job. And if their premiums go up it provides incentive to keep that crappy job or not file. - klo015, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Yeah, their fault for being laid off, right?
Clearly, you have never been laid off but if you ever are I think you will be singing a different tune. - cubicledrone, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7The rainy day savings get consumed every time there's a layoff.
- kanimara, on 02/10/2009, -1/+8This is really bad. More and more people are being fired every day, with the credit crunch they might not have the credit to support their same lifestyles, much less enough money to support a mortgage. Even more defaults on houses to come... Housing market isn't done crashing yet.
- Bloodwine, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7The biggest glaring oversight from FDR. He never factored in longer lifespans into social security. His intentions were like 3-5 years worth of social security for each person (if even that long).
It was never intended for the 20+ year spans that people are enjoying now. The Boomers are going to destroy SS when they all retire. - KloroFormd, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7It's not like many of them have a choice...
- Eorster, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Had a talk with several people about this very thing today, going to get very scary in about 5 years. That on top of the age discrimination out there, there was a very good show on NPR today about this very situation, makes for a very hard times for older folks.
- Smaulz, on 02/10/2009, -2/+9Bye. Personally, I'm gonna stay and fight it out.
- ethanji22, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7Rather be watching 24. Maybe Jack can torture someone to get unemployment benefits...
- ethanji22, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6Unfortunately anyone can occasionally get caught in a bad situation. This is not welfare. This is something you already paid into like social security. The problem is the government mismanagement of unemployment benefits and social security. I'd have no problem with your perspective as long as I would keep the social security and unemployment payments in my personal possession. Self reliance is important, but promises need to be kept by our government. Government is built on trust and if you can't trust your government to provide any services you end up with a very poor country...
- ToBuns, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6I'm collecting unemployment insurance myself, been so since November. I was laid off when my company went under, spilling 500 people into the job market. I look for work every week, have applied to many jobs, even had a few interviews. The reality is that every week the number of out of work people going after the increasing rare job opening becomes more unbalanced. I certainly didn't "choose" to not work. I've been working constantly since I was 16, and full time since 23. Today at the age of 32 i find myself needing to take back a fraction of the money I've paid into California unemployment insurance. I'm glad it's available. If the safety net wasn't there, I shudder to think where I'd be after my cash savings depleted.
Consider this....With the safety net I can take some time and find a job that pays $70,000, from which i would pay $14,000 federal income tax. Without the net, and no food in the cupboard, I grab the first job that pays $30,000, from which I would pay only $4000 in federal income tax. I hope that little factoid adds some dimension. - osiris24x, on 02/10/2009, -7/+13It's sad to say, and I've been holding it off for a long time, trying to keep my chin up. But it's time it came out - ***** this country. I'm leaving.
- phrenzy, on 02/10/2009, -0/+6And your solution? Let her die? You sound li-
Oh, wait, I just realized you're that same old troll that seems to have created a new account... Don't bother answering.
welcome back to block. - andy3109, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5The whole point of the stimulus is to invest money where it will stimulate the economy. Thus, creating jobs for the jobless to EARN instead of taking for free.
- drex8, on 02/10/2009, -2/+7Barack Obama is giving a speech about it right now as we speak. All the major networks are carrying it.
- kev0476, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6Hey Nerys, did it ever occur to you that there would be horrible ramifications if the banks, auto makers and everyone else goes under?
If they go under, so do the jobs they support, the money they invest. The auto parts manufactures can not survive in the US without the big 3. That is a huge job industry to say ***** you too. - sugarazor, on 02/10/2009, -0/+5What other job though? Kinda hard to find another one when no one's hiring and companies are trying all sorts of crazy schemes just to avoid laying off another 10% of their workforce.
- phrenzy, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6Hey, douche. Let me know the name of that "private charity" that's gonna pay for my gas and my rent while I look for another job, ok?
- ImOnYourTeam, on 02/10/2009, -2/+7^^^
"Just eliminating income tax property tax and school tax (NONE of those are needed and NONE are justified) "
Are you even from the U.S.? - FyberOptic, on 02/10/2009, -1/+6Unfortunately, if the republicans get their way, we're gonna see even more unemployment. They want state aid and such removed from the stimulus bill, because they say it doesn't create jobs. And sure, that's absolutely true. But when state budgets are all in the red, they're looking at LOSING employees. They need every penny of help they can get to keep their staff, which includes teachers and everything else. We cannot afford to lose more teachers. Nor can we really afford more unemployment in general. Sometimes it's about keeping jobs too, not just creating them.
Seriously, just pass the damn bill. Who cares how much pork is in it at this point. -
