- stonebear, on 06/06/2008, -10/+57Please bear in mind that the 5.5% is corrupted by politics; it only counts people who are collecting unemployment benefits. The real figure (excluding those who don't need to work, or can't) is probably somewhere between 12 and 16%. Counting was probably more straightforward in the great depression, and peaked at 22%.
- davecskul, on 06/06/2008, -5/+49The hammer is finally dropping in the media. We just cannot deny the issues any longer.
- fancypantscz, on 06/06/2008, -6/+45Um, you haven't noticed yet the Bush Administration never says something publicly unless it feels it needs to manipulate public opinion in some. As a result you can pretty much much rest assured the exact opposite of what Bush says is true.
Bush: "But the fundamentals of the economy are sound"
Yea, if by fundamentals you mean the military industrial complex and big oil... *****
I mean it is almost laughable in a sad kind of way. Holy ***** did you see the NYSE and the Dollar and the Oil and the...
*****... - StingingNettle, on 06/06/2008, -4/+36No, no, its OK because we haven't had 2 quarters of negative GDP yet. Uh huh. Did you catch the sarcasm? I realize sometimes its difficult over text.

- DaDrake, on 06/07/2008, -4/+22Nobody is "letting" this happen. The fact is, corporations aren't investing and being more cautious in taking risks. While we aren't in a recession, the shift from 5 to 5.5% is something we haven't seen since 1986. Obviously, this is a reason for some concern and the stock market emulates it (with a 300+ drop in the DOW). But, there is little the government can do instead of providing a more friendly business environment (and the US already ranks number one in that).
This tension also coincides with high inflation in the euro, a low GDP in Europe, and the largest economic drop in China for 15 years. In other words, the global market is shaky with the increasing price of oil... and the market doesn't quite know how to adjust to it yet. On Wednesday, oil was down to $123 a barrel, then on Thursday, an analysis said it would hit $150 and the price rose to $133 a barrel. The market is adjusting and this will take time. - GutZyWoman, on 06/06/2008, -5/+23Yeah, but Bush says we can't lose our nerve. I've lost my nerve with him!
- Boeing777, on 06/07/2008, -3/+20what we need now is another war with iran to make our people forget that their country is being bankrupt by warmongers with too much "undeserved" power.

May 2008 -- 9.7%
"Total unemployed, plus all marginally attached workers, plus total employed part time for economic reasons, as a percent of the civilian labor force plus all marginally attached workers" - xtinamo, on 06/07/2008, -1/+16How can it be "cyclical" when this is the highest increase since 1986?
- sassip, on 06/07/2008, -1/+14I was at the Dollar Store the other day, hey 4 rolls of toilet paper for a buck. Anyhow, talking to the teller i said, "You must be the most popular store in town." She replied, "We just had a meeting and they are cutting hours and laying a few of us off." True story from the Dollar Store...
- trenchcoat, on 06/07/2008, -3/+14During the 70's it was 7.5 percent. Just sayin'.
- withears, on 06/07/2008, -3/+14Mission Accomplished.
I'm going to give up playing foosball to show my support for the economy. - inactive, on 06/07/2008, -1/+12At least Bush and Cheney and their buddies are making a ton of money. I'm sure that $600 per person stimulus check will make everyone forget that they threw the U.S. economy into the toilet.
- sjbdallas, on 06/07/2008, -3/+13What I don't understand is why corporate america is letting this continue. You'd think with all their lobbyists they'd be pushing the government to do something but instead they just keep posting losses, laying off people, shutting down plants, etc. I could understand how the little guys paying 80 bucks a week for gas don't have a voice buy why don't the airlines who are spending billions pressuring someone?
- Skooma714, on 06/07/2008, -1/+11What a time to come of age into.
Hopefully we'll get some kickass poetry out of this. Wake me up in two decades. - helleborus, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9If it 'fit for everybody', the unemployment rate would be 100%! I too am doing better than I was a year ago but that doesn't make the general outlook any less bleak.
- RoSoDigital, on 06/07/2008, -4/+13Thanks George Bush...while we spend BILLIONS/week on war in a country getting fat off our occupation there, you're own people are eating *****...Hey Mr Bush - Do you speak italian? no...good - Va Cagare, testa di merda
- Hekate666, on 06/07/2008, -3/+12But that's worth how much when the dollar so low...
- ThePenrod, on 06/07/2008, -0/+9Obviously you are not a statistician.
- crunchdigg, on 06/07/2008, -0/+8http://data.bls.gov/PDQ/servlet/SurveyOutputServle ...
the unempolyment rate fell the entire time Clinton was in office.
It was highest, at 7.3 percent, in January 1993, his first month in office.
What were you saying? - CDoug03, on 06/07/2008, -4/+12they took our jobs
- mediaspree, on 06/07/2008, -2/+10and you work in? I hope not IT..you will be shipped overseas soon. I hope not in mortgages...well *****...where do you work.I have a resume.

- ExRe, on 06/07/2008, -0/+8It STARTED NEAR 8% when Clinton got in and has RAISED since Bush got in.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Us_unemployment ... - hadak, on 06/07/2008, -0/+7Really? 5.5? Wouldn't that be nice. Here in Michigan it's 6.9%, which is only slightly down from last month's 7.1 or 7.2%. Source: http://www.milmi.org/
- wonderchemist, on 06/07/2008, -4/+11I thought people who never had jobs (teens entering the job market) weren't counted as unemployed?
- NelsonR, on 06/07/2008, -3/+10You have to laugh at the gullibility of those who believe the figures put before you each and every month.
Sorry, the unemployment level is much higher while not counting the people who ran out of benefits, those who have given up and those who will not work while watching our elitist grow fatter. As with the inflation rate it's all in the numbers put out by a cadre of bureaucrats dependent upon the status quo.
Would you give up a lucrative high paying job with unusual perks? - wonderchemist, on 06/07/2008, -1/+8Now maybe a high schooler is looking for a minimum wage job, but a college graduate? Unless they majored in Beef Patty Engineering, I would think they would be looking to start higher.
- sfacets, on 06/07/2008, -2/+8Is Stalling? I would call $9,409,482,869,000 pretty much stalled.
http://www.brillig.com/debt_clock/ - inactive, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5So you buried my post, ignored what I said, and posted a worthless and thoughtless reply? Why am I not surprised?
- bjornski, on 06/07/2008, -1/+6You didn't quit McDonalds and start working at a better company?
So, they moved you up from fry-cook? - gobbleplex, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5Simple. They make their money by selling the goods made in China to people in Europe. They don't have to sell or employ in the US to be located here or to make money.
- pintomp3, on 06/07/2008, -1/+6another important but unreported figure is the underemployed.
- trenchcoat, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5In that case it was probably more like 12 in the 70's then.
- Echosphere, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5***** is right. If I could digg you twice, I would. Thank you.
- RIPtechtv, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5I got layed off from the school district being an assistant administration. I got payed $16.25 not to bad. The problem was many months before I got a bump in my pay. I got payed from a fixed account so because of that increase my job that should have been 8 months got cut short to 6.
No joke today I went back there to help out today, only got payed with some cold pizza and dried up lasagna at this point I will take anything cause I do not have my credentials. - lukemann, on 06/07/2008, -0/+5$5 a gallon wasn't projected and that's just right around the corner.
- cmapes2, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4Yep, gas hit $5.00 a gallon in Los Angeles, trust me I've seen it with my own eyes.
- blacktriangle, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4*ASCII of jobless and broke iphone users posing with their phones that are now non functional accessories.*
- bjornski, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4"Corporate America" profits from this. Why would they stop it?
You think they're loyal to the country or to the dollar? - warr1979, on 06/07/2008, -11/+15Well remember a vote for McCain is a vote for a third Bush term !!
- helleborus, on 06/07/2008, -3/+7Once again - this figure doesn't include the long term unemployed, the woefully underemployed or people working two or three jobs to compensate for the good job that they lost.
- inactive, on 06/07/2008, -2/+6@anaesthetized keep up with the anastheitcs, it is easier than facing reality.
I know that most Americans are brainwashed, but listen. The money supply has increased by 15% over the last year as the net worth of the US economy has shrunk. Doesn't that mean anything to you sheep? - jcrollman, on 06/07/2008, -1/+5At least the people in soup lines will have their iphones.
- L33tmaster, on 06/07/2008, -0/+4Fantastic time to graduate from college...
