- kcurtiss, on 10/21/2008, -4/+70what we really need to do is get rid of the stupid penny
- WordsnCollision, on 10/21/2008, -1/+55Those are good looking coins, especially compared to our Canadian $1 coins that feature a loon (kind of a duck). Once you start using the coins - we have $2 coins also - you get used to them. Plus, your spare change becomes a gold mine - 25 "toonies" roll up into a cool $50.
- StigNordas, on 10/21/2008, -0/+42I used one of these for the first time this morning to buy coffee. The dude at the counter looked like he never saw one before.
- bradspangler, on 10/21/2008, -0/+39Criticism of "paper money" depends on whether or not it is backed by a commodity. If there's no gold, silver, uranium, cocaine, pork bellies or whatever backing a paper dollar bill, then it's *just* paper. A coin with a face value of supposedly "$1" that actually contains about 2 cents worth of zinc and trace amounts of copper plating is also "paper money" in that it's not redeemable from the issuer for a specified amount of a commodity. Likewise, a paper bill redeemable for a true "dollar" (i.e. one twentieth of a troy ounce of gold) would not be "paper money" because it's not JUST paper.
- inactive, on 10/21/2008, -2/+37Australia did away with $1 and $2 notes many, many years ago and they are better than notes and yes, they certainly add up when you 'save' them.
- johnnick, on 10/21/2008, -1/+35And you bruise the strippers when you throw the dollar coins.
- nycjap, on 10/21/2008, -7/+41I don't know. I usually wind up with wads of ones in my pockets, because if I have a larger bill -- like a $10 or a $20 -- it's easier and quicker for me to pay for stuff with a single, large bill, than to try and count it out in smaller bills.
If I had 20 of these things in my pants pocket, I might hurt myself, if I had to run to catch a bus or something. - zacharytelschow, on 10/21/2008, -4/+35If this saves the government money and uses less resources, its a no brainer. Just stop printing dollar bills. If people don't like it, tough beans.
- minigig, on 10/21/2008, -3/+31WTF does Obama have anything to do with coins in your pants
- znicket, on 10/21/2008, -0/+27It's funny. Most of the world is using coins in fairly high denomination (Euro, Aussie Dollar, Latvian Lats, etc) but Americans find all kinds of reasons why it is "impossible or hard" to coin the dollar.
The only thing I will admit is that it makes for a more expensive experience to go to the strip club. - veled, on 10/21/2008, -3/+27I like the dollar coins. Damn are they heavy though...
- Pother, on 10/21/2008, -0/+21I tried using them exclusively over the dollar bill when they started this version with the presidents on them.
My bank barely made them available.
And of the 10 or so vending machines at work, only 2 would take them.
And heck the laundromats still won't take the new $5, $10, and $20 bills in their change machines.
I've been to Canada plenty now, and I have no problem using their $1 and $2 coins when I am there.
And they didn't weigh me down.
Their laundry and vending machines have no problems with the $1 and $2 coins... and it seems those business' are still in business.
Until we get rid of the dollar bill, and banks start preferring the coin over the bill, by not using the coin instead of the bill, any wish of Americans to change to using this coin, is just that, a wish.
No, the dollar coin is NOT going to be used anytime soon, without someone doing a Kill the Bill campaign, and forcing us. - AmyVernon, on 10/21/2008, -0/+20That's the main problem! No one likes to accept them, because they don't know wtf to do with them. I've traveled to Europe and Australia and found I preferred the coins to the bills. But I'll be damned if you can even find them here or find any vending machine to accept them outside a post office.
- moracity, on 10/21/2008, -3/+23If they want us to use coins, get rid of the dollar bills. People could actually save a lot of money because people don't like carrying coins.
- FyreGoddess, on 10/21/2008, -0/+18I like the dollar coins, but I never EVER get them as change. I'd have to go to the bank and ask for them specifically or buy something like stamps with a large bill.
Also, one of the biggest problems is that, in my area, things like bus fare boxes, vending machines and coin changers (like at the laundromat) aren't equipped to take them, so it's limiting for a lot of people. - chicagojack, on 10/21/2008, -1/+18spend 12 million on this?!?!?!?
- DrVic, on 10/21/2008, -0/+16When i was in Europe a few years ago I got accustomed to using the 1 and 2 euro coins. Was pretty convenient, until you have about 20-30 euros worth of them in your pants, making you sag, yo.
- BradHAWK, on 10/21/2008, -0/+16Just don't try spending them at Best Buy!
[Best Buy customer] arrested, cuffed after using $2 bills
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTI ... - smt12, on 10/21/2008, -0/+15So they get $20 in coins, or the one sneaky silent guy who actually has bills in his wallet? I don't follow.
- JamesPDX, on 10/21/2008, -2/+17To get the US to use the coins, they need to stop printing the bills. Simple as that...
- PistolSO, on 10/21/2008, -3/+17Too bad almost nobody wants to use dollar coins. Most Americans prefer the dollar bill, and no amount of marketing will change that
- apastafarian, on 10/21/2008, -0/+13I'm all for a more durable cash, but this has been done before and failed. I have bad memories of the Susan B Anthony dollar days trying to pay for a movie ticket with the coins and being refused. They were all that I had, I must have lobbied the cashier for 20 minutes but I couldn't convince her they were legal tender.
- laika2420, on 10/21/2008, -0/+13Anyone else find it funny that the number of Sacagawea coins was reduced and the President responsible for the Trail of Tears was introduced?
- bansuri93, on 10/21/2008, -2/+14Nevermind that American paper money is made without trees--composed of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen--agricultural products that are a lot more renewable than mining.
- TVega, on 10/21/2008, -0/+12They have a coin slot.......sorry, I couldn't stop myself.
- Jlaugh, on 10/21/2008, -0/+11Moving to purely electronic money gives the banks to much power over the average person. There already trying to keep track of everything we spend, and on what we are spending it on.
- algaeturd, on 10/21/2008, -3/+13Until they start putting gold back into these coins, they'll still likely be valueless in the end.
- seanovan, on 10/21/2008, -0/+10Strippers usually lick and stick a laminated nudie card of themselves to their nether-regions or roll up a poster into a funnel, then you toss a loonie to "win" the card/poster. If you whip a loonie them you get to meet the bouncer.
- PennFarmer, on 10/21/2008, -0/+10Or a $5 and 2 or 3 coins.
- aolshove, on 10/21/2008, -0/+9They'd be pretty awkward to use at a strip club...
- Gemfinder, on 10/21/2008, -8/+17I'm down with it. Go for it. The Founding Fathers didn't like promissory notes/paper money anyway.
The only real practical advantage of paper money over coin is that paper money is silent, and an anti-theft practice. All a thief has to do is walk down the street, listening for someone clinking and clanking, and they know who to hit. - geneusutwerk, on 10/21/2008, -1/+10As an American who has recently moved to London, I have to say I love using coins for anything under 5 pounds. For some reason it just makes transactions easier, grabbing a coin from my pocket is so much better than taking out my wallet and shifting through the other bills.
- megabozz, on 10/21/2008, -1/+9So you'd rather have currency backed by nothing rather than something, Pauldy? You make zero sense. You accuse commodities of being "invariably fluid", but what's your basis of comparison? Certainly not the fiat currency that can be created by out of thin air by an entry in a computer. You can buy just about as much T-bone steak today with an ounce of gold as you could 100 years ago. Just look at the news to see how well the "full faith and credit of the United States" is working out.
- Hnnnnnghhh, on 10/21/2008, -0/+8Privacy nightmare, plus the processing companies take a % of every transaction. They don't need any more of our money.
- TheMachine1, on 10/21/2008, -3/+11People tend to need dollar bills for vending machines. What percent of vending machine accept dollar coins? It has to be insanely low number.
- bearsandbulls, on 10/21/2008, -2/+10Make them out of a metal that is worth something like copper and I'm down. But if it's just going to be some worthless steel alloy piece of junk then put me on the these are too heavy boat.
- Raptor007, on 10/21/2008, -0/+8That's only 0.00171429% of 700 billion.
- yamaha2000us, on 10/21/2008, -0/+8But what are the strippers going to do...
- rabidbob, on 10/21/2008, -1/+9Auz, NZ, UK didn't find it "hard or impossible" because they all just said "from this date, no more bills for 1 or 2 dollar/pound denomination". Stop making dollar bills and start making coins - job done.
- bradleyland, on 10/21/2008, -2/+9"...especially compared to our Canadian $1 coins that feature a loon (kind of a duck)."
Good thing you offered clarification. For a moment, I was left wondering why they'd put our president on your coins. - mogebier, on 10/21/2008, -0/+7I get the Dollar coins from the bank and use them all the time. But I do it to annoy people :) Most teens have never seen them, and have no idea where to put them in their drawer. I also get and use 2 Dollar bills for the same reason.
- jsc230, on 10/21/2008, -0/+7I assume you then deposit that money to the bank and pay off your credit card bill.
That is genius, it is free reward points. - eonblu, on 10/21/2008, -4/+11I don't like the idea of dollar coins, but that's mostly because I hate carrying change in my pocket. Whenever I visit Canada, I always end up with my pockets full of coins jingling around. They are too easy to lose. Seriously, I went to get my keys out once and I ended up spilling about $4 down a grate on the street. I'm not going to start carrying a purse any time soon, so I'll stick with my paper bills. Perhaps I could get used to it, but I'd rather not have to.
- inactive, on 10/21/2008, -1/+8while we are at it, let's use metric.
- bxblox, on 10/21/2008, -0/+7I dont think we find it "hard" to use dollar coins. We just never get them as change so there must not be that many in circulation. The only time I ever get a dollar coin is if I buy a metrocard (nyc public transportation card) with cash from a machine, postage stamps from a machine with cash, or request them at a bank. If I had them I would use them, but they are a rare sight. This is just another excuse to make another "stupid americans" joke, but it's pretty baseless.
- rotundo, on 10/21/2008, -0/+6They can blow you, but they still have to print money for other people, and your taxes pay for that. So, you know, being cavalier doesn't accomplish anything.
- emotecontrol, on 10/21/2008, -1/+7A loon isn't a duck.
- daRoach, on 10/21/2008, -1/+7What?
- arplayer2k, on 10/21/2008, -1/+7FTA: Commenting on the incident, Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey told the Sun: "It's a sign that we're all a little nervous in the post-9/11 world."
Its a sign you are a ***** dumb piece of *****. Being in uniform and supposedly upholding the law. Go ***** your self for a job FAILED. Can they make these paper pushing, doughnut packing pigs any stupider? Do I really have to obey these mindless bastards? - Raptor007, on 10/21/2008, -0/+6You live in Portland and you think most dollar notes go in vending machines? I've been to Portland, and I'm pretty sure most dollar notes go to strippers there.
