ONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONONO - lilamae, on 12/09/2008, -8/+48Socialism a go go. U.S. Government has been so succesful running Medicare and Social Security. How could they miss with three big automakers?
Isn't there some conflict of interest here? Monopolistic intent? The U.S. government will be competing with other auto manufacturers in the country. Won't Congress pass unfair laws to reduce competition? Beware business leaders. You may be next on the government hit list. - ozymandias2012, on 12/09/2008, -4/+26This is amazing! Absolutely fascinating! We could be witnessing the second American revolution right now! The government and the workers are siding against the free market. There are businesses shutting down right now and the workers are refusing to leave! They're demanding the businesses stay open so they can keep working, despite the fact that there's no money to pay them! This is not capitalism, this is not democracy, this is not the American way. This is the proletariat asserting authority over the means of production and it's being encouraged by our leaders. I hate to say this but we are seeing a smarter, more efficient, better funded, Hugo Chavez style takeover of our country. What's next? The "Enabling Act"?
- Wosat, on 12/09/2008, -5/+25'Cause if anyone knows how to build cars it's...
the government??? - MCA2142, on 12/09/2008, -5/+25Government owned car companies = check.

- autex, on 12/09/2008, -5/+20Looks like the new camaro is out the window, not to say I'll be able to buy one in this economy.
Oh brother, now a car czar. Does this ever end? - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -8/+20"The program would be overseen by an official, tapped by President George W. Bush,"
Where does this article say Obama is responsible? Where is he even mentioned in the article? - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -1/+11I foresee the American people boycotting these companies over this.
This money is not going to save them. - inactive, on 12/09/2008, -3/+12Obama officially promotes the bailout and whether he is in office or not he still wields influence in Washington, especially since he will be the man calling the shots in a month. So yes, he is at least partially responsible for taking your tax dollars and handing them to big business (which by the way is what democrats usually support anyway.)
- inactive, on 12/09/2008, -0/+9And here comes Soviet style government product management. A car CZAR? Don't give the people what they want, let us give the people what WE think they should want. Don't give them what they need, let us give the people what WE think they need. In fact, who needs the people?

Oh wait, too late. - Christianptriot, on 12/09/2008, -1/+9I was living in England during the mid 1980s when they were privatizing all of the stuff that the British government had formerly operated or controlled. The country was THRILLED that the government was finally getting out of the oil business, and the phone business, and several other things. and HER we have a bunch of self-appointed mental midgets of business wanting to take control of our energy, financial and auto industries when they can't even run the government right.
How stupid can these elected officials get - - - - probably as stupid or worse than the majority of people who voted them in! - joegibes, on 12/09/2008, -1/+8Seems like there are some Digg managers with their degree from University of ***** that don't know a thing about managing companies, let alone making cars.

- SmokingPope, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4Backbone of the US economy? GM employs fewer people than Walmart (by a long-shot the biggest employer), UPS, Home Depot, and Sears. It's been a long time since the auto industry was the backbone of our economy. If I'm not mistaken, Chrysler actually employs fewer people than Circuit City (or it's very close) and we are letting them go bankrupt.
Besides, by keeping these poorly run companies out of bankruptcy, you are eliminating the possibility that a smart, well-run organization (like Tesla) could pick up some of their production capacity. Are you telling me that, based on the past 25 years, Ford, GM, or Chrysler is going to be better and more profitable (and therefore able to employ more people) than someone like Tesla would be? Also, I find it interesting that it wasn't until Congress opened the ATM that these guys started whining about needing cash. We are all being played and we're celebrating it - that's the worst part. Layoffs are coming for these companies - cash or no. You can't operate under an outdated, inefficient business model and stay competitive in the long-run. These guys should have gone bankrupt 15 years ago, but we've allowed them to delay it and it's only going to be worse the longer it goes. - Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -3/+7Where in this article does it mention Obama's name? All I see is how this is a Bush policy once again.
"The program would be overseen by an official, tapped by President George W. Bush," - wakethefockup, on 12/09/2008, -5/+9And these car companies, alone, DID know how to make cars? Two transmissions in 4 years, and 5,000 dollars later.... I don't think so.
- diggduggDOOM, on 12/09/2008, -1/+5Soon they'll need one czar to rule them all.
Behold! The CZAR Czar! - inactive, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4This was also caused in part by the unions, who will now make sure the car companies get the bailout so they can keep their BS jobs.
- TsuruchiBrian, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3All of our presidents are socialist now. Whether they think it is for the common good to spend your money bailing out failing companies or on unjust foreign wars, they all agree that you sure as hell are not entitled to decide how it should be spent.
Republicans are just as much if not more to blame for this. Democrats were always about socialism. Republicans were supposed to be the small government fiscal conservatives. Now they are just pro-war, pro-fundamentalism, pro-corporation, anti-freedom, anti-science, anti-thought, big government, *****.
We get what we deserve. The average intelligence of our voting public is just pathetic for the most powerful nation in the world. The stupidity of our electorate has allowed our government to be saturated with criminals and retards. It is a near perfect refelction of the population as a whole.
I am prepared to move to Sweden if necessary. At least in Sweden the are smart enough to know how to do socialism correctly. Obama promised them a lot more moolah once he is office.
This 15B is just like pocket change enough for them to survive until Saviour Obama can give them the rest of the money.
And let us not forget who personally called all the democrats befor ethe bailout, to beg them to vote for it. - DigbyOdell, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2The only thing worse than design by committee is design by a government committee!

The US Government has gone broke printing money, think about it. - macslut, on 12/09/2008, -2/+4This isn't exactly as bad as it sounds.
First, you need to ask the question as to whether or not the government should do anything to help the automakers.
Many think the answer is no. Let the companies go bankrupt and then they can get new contracts (if any) with the unions. But the problem here is that nobody would buy cars from bankrupt companies, and the workers as well as those in the entire job chain get screwed.
If the answer is yes, then this deal isn't so bad. The government backs loans to the automakers. 20% of the value of the loans is given to the government as stock in the company. If the companies rebound, the government comes out ahead as that 20% increases in value and the government divests.
Workers get to keep their jobs, but the executives will face pay cuts, dilution in stock, and will be forced to ultimately answer to the government for any major decisions.
Likewise, the executives will need to stop fighting the government when it comes to certain regulations.
So what it comes down to are these options:
1) ***** it, we don't want an auto industry and can weather a depression.
2) ***** it, the US auto industry can't be saved.
3) With help, the US auto industry can be saved, and this plan ends up paying the government back along with making other concessions the government has been trying to get the industry to comply with. - inactive, on 12/09/2008, -3/+5Nationalization...
- xcheats, on 12/09/2008, -1/+3Firstly, what are you doing to go through 2 transmissions in 4 years? Towing a boat with your Neon? Secondly its common sense to know that there is an enormous amount of American made cars being made and thus the chances for manufacturing defects is much higher. The fact that you had two transmissions replaced in four years leads me to believe it wasn't performed by a dealer or even a reputable service shop and if you want to blame that on GM, Ford, or Chrysler, you're ridiculous.
- evilbob333, on 12/09/2008, -0/+2Washington will dictate that Ford build a solar-powered car with a built in breathalyzer, a digital radio that doesn't receive any talk radio, built in child seats (even if you don't have children), can't go faster than 55 mph, has a built in black box that reports when and where you go(they will have to tax your milage since your aren't paying the gas tax any more(solar powered remember)) and is Neon yellow for high visibility, and I will still buy a Toyota cause they build what I want for what I can afford.
