Working on the weekends? No way - nycjap, on 01/29/2009, -4/+134No Netflix on the weekends. ;(
- ferrisnox, on 01/29/2009, -8/+116Here is a cost saver...stop delivering spam mail or have a separate class for it that is delivered slower and costs more.
- RBrenner14, on 01/29/2009, -18/+106I like the UPS Driver because he's a drug dealer and he doesn't even know it.
- PeanutCheeseBar, on 01/29/2009, -9/+72So, the price of postage keeps going up, rogue deliverymen are hoarding mail instead of delivering it, and the USPS wonders why people haven't been sending as much mail.
- brainswarm, on 01/29/2009, -0/+59You must not be a Netflix user.
- dpollitt, on 01/28/2009, -0/+57The article said they are looking at cutting the least busy day, not Saturday.
- sjbdallas, on 01/29/2009, -18/+75I don't get anything of value in regular mail. I may as well put a trash can next to the mailbox for all the crap I get. They could drop to 1 day a week as far as i'm concerned.
- KC311Man, on 01/29/2009, -1/+49You know, I bet without Netflix, the post office would REALLY be hurting.
- kymike, on 01/29/2009, -8/+54People like to give the USPS a hard time, but the fact is they deliver far more items (at least 25 times as much...50 times as much during peak season) than UPS & FedEx combined. Yes, they deliver a lot of 'spam', but don't underestimate the value of the USPS.
And, most importantly, you get up-front pricing with the USPS - once they accept your package, that's it, no hidden fees. With FedEx (and UPS), on the other hand, you can end up getting a bill down the road with all sorts of surcharges attached.
Very large companies - like Amazon - get great rates with UPS, plus they do localized warehousing to lower costs and make things more efficient. But for small-to-mid sized companies, the USPS provides a great service. Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes, for example, are a great deal.
And no, I don't work for the USPS. But I do have a great deal of experience with shipping systems, e-commerce, etc...
Privatization of the USPS would ruin it. That is exactly what FedEx & UPS want, by the way...and you should ask yourself why they want it. - Hosalabad, on 01/29/2009, -1/+47Great idea.
Cut one day of delivery. Then stop allowing bulk rates. Make the people who send 6 flyers a week for duct cleaning pay full price postage. They are causing the carriers to stop at every house for no good reason, might as well make them pay for it. - SEANWOOKIE, on 01/29/2009, -5/+43It is FedEx and you should of gave Mitch credit.

- istudioweb, on 01/28/2009, -7/+41Less work - more money. More money - less work. I think I'm getting the idea now.
- nedzeve, on 01/29/2009, -2/+34Well, "competing like a real business" would also involve them adjusting their rates considerably upwards to complete with the rates Fedex, UPS, and other couriers charge. Try mailing a letter with them for 40 cents and get back to us.
- Yankees368, on 01/29/2009, -1/+32NEWMAN!
- Tobey, on 01/29/2009, -2/+32have*
- d3sp, on 01/29/2009, -0/+28Businesses would definitely be affected.
- TheSpook, on 01/29/2009, -2/+30given*
- akerasi, on 01/29/2009, -0/+26Spam mail does have a separate class, but it's actually cheaper per letter than normal mail. It's also easier for postal carriers, not harder, as one-to-a-box means no real sorting.
- nedzeve, on 01/29/2009, -1/+25He's not a dealer, he's just a mule.
- coyote1284, on 01/29/2009, -0/+24I'm ready for flying ***** cars! Damnit!
- ChinezePanda, on 01/29/2009, -2/+26I cant wait to not get loads of junk mail and ***** from my local school district on saturdays!
Whatever am I to do!? - craftyguy, on 01/29/2009, -3/+24So stamps are going to be cheaper now? Oh wait. LOL
- screwy3333, on 01/29/2009, -3/+23Good, now I no longer have to look forward to bills on Saturday ....
- corytv, on 01/29/2009, -8/+28This is the stupidest thing ever. How can the post office not be making money? 95% of what they bring me is unsolicited crap-- ADVERTISING. I have a "brilliant" idea. Just charge the people who clog my mailbox and landfills with crap PAY MORE. WHY does commercial bulk mail cost CONSIDERABLY less than first class? This is STUPID. They should be paying as much, if not more. Not only would it decrease the volume of crap, it would make the USPS profitable. Stop cranking the rate of First Class mail, and start raising the bulk mail rates-- that would change things in a hurry.
This is what concerns me about the rapidly inflating government. I love Obama's tone, but this "government fixes all" mentality is backed up by years of idiotic bureaucracies who can't even figure out basic business 101 things like "hey, let's make people who use 95% of our service pay enough to make us profitable" - afruff23, on 01/29/2009, -0/+19No mail-order brides on weekends ;(
- Zain123, on 01/29/2009, -1/+19Actually the price of postage has been about the same for at least the last 130 years if you consider inflation.
- standalonematt, on 01/29/2009, -2/+20Nobody wants to compete with the post office. No competitor wants to offer universal delivery to unprofitable rural addresses. What other companies want to do is skim the cream (saturation junk mail to urban addresses) - not deliver letters to small towns. If this happened - the USPS would be in even more trouble.
- standalonematt, on 01/29/2009, -0/+17Well and competing like a business would also mean the end of universal delivery - because one thing real businesses do is cut customers who are not profitable for them.
- standalonematt, on 01/29/2009, -1/+18Actually for the price USPS is one of the best (if not THE best) deals out there.
- ferrisnox, on 01/29/2009, -1/+18Wasn't it the Bush stooges and cronies who passed the first bailout bill that didn't end up saving a single persons house/mortgage? Yea I thought so.
- IamNomad, on 01/29/2009, -0/+16im ready for multipass.
- pcghost, on 01/29/2009, -4/+20If that makes the Postal Service more efficient, so be it. I can handle one less day of mail, even if it means timing my netflix discs around it. Hard times and all...
- standalonematt, on 01/29/2009, -1/+17Actually since Netflix pieces are non-machineable (and in fact are prone to jam machinery) they actually lose money handling Netflix pieces. The only solution is to start charging Netflix a non-machineable surcharge - or to have Netflix come in machineable envelopes (which are more expensive too) - something like BigPond in Australia uses.
- joebus, on 01/29/2009, -1/+17But the thing is, USPS delivers to everywhere, no matter what. One of the reasons why Fedex and UPS are so successful is because they can choose where to deliver. Like they won't deliver a package to the middle of nowhere because it will cost more money, but the USPS has to.
- viserov, on 01/29/2009, -1/+17I'm ready for Leeloo.
- MillionsLivio, on 01/29/2009, -3/+18No Gamefly on the weekends. ;(
- ImperialSoren, on 01/29/2009, -13/+28stop paying slow as ***** mail clerks such ridiculous salaries and benefits and start competing like a real business?
- GetShorty, on 01/29/2009, -7/+22For all I care, they could deliver every other day. I wouldn't think it would have an impact on the vast majority of people.
- nedzeve, on 01/29/2009, -4/+19Actually, I have no problem with the price of postage at all. I can send an ounce of paper from Maine to Los Angeles for 40 cents -- door to door it takes a couple days. I think that's amazing. I'd easily be willing to pay 5 times for that.
- nonymous666, on 01/29/2009, -3/+17Actually, they'd prefer to have *more* spam mail.
They're complaining that mail usage is down causing them to lose something like $6 billion less than in the past (year? decade? I don't remember). That said, I wanna say to them... 'you don't exist to make a profit. if you have less mail to deliver than in the past then you should need less money than you had in the past." - handheldchimp, on 01/29/2009, -7/+21Won't this slow down other companies by slowing how quickly they get their packages? Or do just the dumb companies use USPS?
- ghostright, on 10/20/2009, -1/+14How disgruntling!
- rillo561, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13No Gamefly and Netflix on weekends ;(
- zomgflamer, on 01/29/2009, -0/+13I was saving so much money on toilet paper by using PennySaver instead.
- jerrycan, on 01/29/2009, -1/+13you get mail on weekends? holy *****!
- dsm3000gt, on 01/29/2009, -3/+15Less work: Still driving to every single mail box in the United States. Still paying retirement funds for Veterans. Still having the same number of people employed for the same amount of hours.
Damn straight Less work = more money needed. Because less work = less revenue, and less revenue = deficit.
And for those saying that the USPS should go under:
A) FedEx and UPS wouldn't go to your mailbox every business day to see if you might have some mail for them. They'd probably make you deliver it to them, driving to every mailbox in the US every day costs a lot. They might even charge you $19 a month for "letter service" to offset the fuel cost.
B) The Office of the Inspector General/Postal Inspectors have free reign of the USPS. They hold USPS accountable for the integrity of the mail. If FedEx and UPS had control of letter delivery, they'd hire people as temps, as contracted workers (just like the contracted Comcast workers who aren't actually "employed" by Comcast, in case they steal your stuff or mess up). They'd do this to waive all responsibility if one of those temps steals some letters, gets some credit cards, and drives off to Mexico.
In short: If the USPS goes under, be prepared for a huge can of worms. Paying a monthly fee to receive letters would be the norm. And temps making $8 an hour would be handling your credit card statements. And your vehicle registration papers. And all those other lovely little envelopes that hold your SSN. Enjoy those thoughts. - gahannamailman, on 01/29/2009, -0/+12The carrier should've picked it they had seen the flag. Can't say that they did or didn't, however, rules state that if we don't have mail for the address we're not required to pick up. I disagree, if I see outgoing (flag or not) I pick it up.
- ingoldsby, on 01/29/2009, -0/+12I came in here to post this. Not getting my flix on Sat for the lose.
