- phantasyhero, on 01/22/2009, -4/+26Am I really the only one who thinks Twitter is completely stupid?
- zubi, on 01/22/2009, -0/+12I would go the donation route like wiki. You start putting ads all over the place and people will inevitably look for alternatives. I really hope there is some dynamic way to become profitable without cluttering the page with BS.
- PhairOh, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11I tend to try pretty much all the new web services at least once and I'm a big fan of a bunch of them, but for the life of me I just don't understand Twitter. I mean, what's the point? How do I find people to follow? Why do I care what they have to say? Why are they even saying them?
To be fair, I haven't spent nearly enough time with it to truly pass judgment, but I think that's a direct result from me just not getting it. Anyone out there able to explain it to me? I would be very grateful! - HallenbeckJoe, on 01/22/2009, -2/+12Stupid Twitter news flooding Digg.
- andronmon, on 01/21/2009, -0/+9Sounds like the rest of the internet
- angelgabe, on 01/22/2009, -0/+7Sounds like Youtube. Perhaps we can look forward to ads in our tweets.
- diggduggDOOM, on 01/22/2009, -2/+8I must be one of the few people left that doesn't care about Twitter or Facebook/Myspace.
It all strikes me as very narcissistic. On the other hand, I'm probably in danger of practical nonexistence with regard to the internet. - thewalkrecords, on 01/22/2009, -0/+6no, you're not.
- algaeturd, on 01/22/2009, -1/+7There's a serious risk that twitter users somehow gain the false idea that someone out there gives a ***** about what they're doing this very second.
There's a risk that pretentious people who always feel the need to update everyone may get their hearts broken when they finally realize nobody give a ***** if they're 'having a sandwich' at 1:05 pm today. - oldhick, on 01/22/2009, -0/+5Not everyone uses twitter to post their minute by minute doings. Many people use it almost as a chat service or to communicate news stories and topics of interest.
- DirtyVicar, on 01/22/2009, -1/+6Don't forget that you too can use ubiquitous to spice up your stories!
* "Ubiquitous $5000 Home Made from Recycled Paper."
* "Ubiquitous blow-up doll sex suspect arrested in Australia"
* "Heath Ledger Nominated For Ubiquitous Oscar On Anniversary Of His Death" - neonoodle, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4Too bad you can't eat on media coverage alone.
- meruru, on 01/22/2009, -0/+4You are assuming that they actually have a revenue plan
- dystra, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3nope
- InfiniteNothing, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3Try google chrome
- electricwaffles, on 01/22/2009, -0/+3They already said they have a model, and they're working on it. Chill!
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2008/12 ...
"By charging for corporate accounts, Stone says, Twitter will earn revenue from such companies as JetBlue, Comcast and Dell, which already use the social networking tool to build brand awareness and grassroots advertising. In exchange, Twitter will work with these companies to build corporate-exclusive features." - lazyslacker, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Also kind of like Google talk, Facebook chat, Meebo, StumbleUpon, and plain old SMS texting?
- FredFredrickson, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2MySpace is plastered with ads - it has a plan, at least.
- mshtml, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Twitter needs power users who pay to dominate the front page.
- Aleman360, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2**edit I'm dumb.
- benologist, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Donations suck as a model. Wikipedia's a rare exception, toy sites like Twitter would die overnight if that's what they relied on. They'd get some donations but they'd only cover rent for that first month.
A far better model is to charge money. - FFXIfrohike, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2Because nobody in their right mind would use Facebook or a chat client to do that...
- chalkboy, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2I have grown to pretty much ignore ads. I dont mind them if they wanted to put an ad in my tweet I would be okay with it. I like the service and would be willing to have ads. As long as they are text only and dont freaking move.
- DarkprinceArmon, on 01/22/2009, -0/+2I use Twitter Livejournal, Myspace and Facebook. (Funny that Twitter does not come up a s a misspelled word.) Guess that makes me narcissistic, but I like to use them to keep things fresh and interesting because these days if your not fresh and interesting your dead on the internet. Twitter is to mini blog updates about my website. Livejournal is for works in progress. Myspace and Facebook are for contacts, friends, advertising. I could really care less about Twitter's bottom line unless it hurts Twitter in the long run; which is a service I found a lot of use for recently. you know there was a time (and probably still is) where the internet was not about bottom lines.
- kdor, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1I like Twitter, but I think they may have gotten to a point where they may have to resort to subscription. They could put ads on their pages, but what about gadgets and widgets that bypass the webpage. The only thing left would be to imbed ads in the tweets. Not much space to be effective.
- dystra, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1i can't explain it to you but i can agree with you. i really...really tried to use it but i just couldnt get into it. in the end i came to the conclusion that it takes a certain type of person to like twitter(which there happens to be an abundance of).
- HillerMylife, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Digg is slow as heck and I just wish their RSS feeds provided a direct link to the article
- farfromhere, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1I agree.
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1I don't care about that stuff. And it is very narcissistic. Not even your best friend should care what you are up to at this very minute. It can wait until you see them again.
But it's odd. If you don't have one of those, you simply don't exist. I'm just waiting for the kids to start looking at you funny, sorta like if you don't own a cell phone something must be wrong with you. What? No facebook? You must have no friends! You creep! Not sharing your every waking moment on Twitter? You freak!
Social networking? Or a new form of fascism? Will be interesting to see things in a decade or so, when the people that haven't been collecting friends, buddies, followers, etc. get left behind for good. It kinda strikes me as the untouchables in India. - diggduggDOOM, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1There's nothing "wrong" with it. It's just a little like saying you buy Playboy for the excellent articles (which it does have, but is clearly not the reason most 'read' the magazine).
I'm sure people do use Twitter "to communicate news stories and topics of interest" (interest to whom?), but that's not what most people are using it for. - inactive, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1why dont they just charge a penny a twit or something.
and reward the people who get the most views with some of that. - agsinger, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2Twitters PR strategy is brilliant: leak nothing about your revenue plans and let the tech and business world write/gossip about it while sitting back and watching the buzz. They are written on daily by national media, blogs and even reach digg page 1 frequently. Clearly this is smart what they are doing, we're all talking about them aren't we?
- sigafoo, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1I must be losing it, because I saw this head line an instantly wanted to play risk.
- neonoodle, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2I think exactly the same thing. I logged into twitter the other day when Digg had the story about twitter surpassing digg in viewership and I just don't understand what's so great about it.
- trollick, on 01/22/2009, -1/+2Such as...?
- FFXIfrohike, on 01/22/2009, -0/+11. Charge per Twitter
2. Piss off user base
3. Watch user base move to apps that are actually relevant and have more than 2 features
4. ???
5. Profit! - merreborn, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Wikipedia has a good reason to stay ad-free. By doing so, they afford to stay neutral, and avoid accusations of positive bias in articles about their sponsors.
Twitter has no such reason. They have no neutrality to maintain.
Yes, if you overdo advertising, people will leave. But there is a level of advertising that people will tolerate. The ads on digg, slashdot, youtube, myspace, and facebook aren't driving people away. Hell, Myspace is even turning a solid profit, no matter how much those of us with aesthetic sense loathe it.
As long as your service is worth more than the inconvenience your ads provide, users won't go anywhere. The real adhaters will just install adblock. - LiquidSpark, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1You're not alone. I've never used facebook, myspace, or twitter. I'm sure there are good qualities to those services but it all seems like attention whoring to me.
- merreborn, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1Twitter doesn't come up as a misspelled word because it is a real word.
It's an onomatopoeia for birdsong. - oldhick, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1Yes, exactly like all of those. What's wrong with using different tools? Twitter might be easier for some people.
- FFXIfrohike, on 01/22/2009, -0/+1On the contrary, I think he explains the allure of Twitter quite accurately. The appeal of Twitter pretty much disintegrates the moment you ponder whether or not anyone besides your self-googling navel-gazing self really gives half a ***** about what you are doing on a minute-by-minute basis.
Transparency != Relevance. - merreborn, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1I can answer your questions in the context of how I use twitter:
I mean, what's the point?
Keeping up with my family. My mother, father, sister and wife all twitter regularly
How do I find people to follow?
I've never gone looking for people to follow. I follow people I know in real life.
Why do I care what they have to say?
Because I know them in real life
Why are they even saying them?
Because they want to keep the rest of us up to date on what they're up to. - merreborn, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1I find facebook and twitter are useful tools for keeping in touch with friends and family. It has nothing to do with narcissism, and everything to do with communication.
- mibi, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1lol, I love the twitter ignorance. Of course no one cares what you bought at Whole Foods 5 minutes ago, but twitter is an essential marketing and communication tool if you know how to use it properly. They have been naysayers about every new piece of technology, usually from people who feel they are too late in the game to get involved.
- 4NDr01D, on 01/22/2009, -2/+2maybe we can use twitter instead of 20 cent SMS text messaging (yes i'm on unlimited plan)
- FredFredrickson, on 01/22/2009, -2/+2Bring on the fail! I hate Twitter anyway!
- Aruna, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1Why do companies such as Jetblue, Comcast, or Dell need brand awareness? They're already well known. And why would smaller companies go this route?
- inactive, on 01/22/2009, -1/+1Flush Twitter down the *****.

What is Digg?
