- Egon Spengler - AmyVernon, on 12/09/2008, -2/+12what?
- gcnaddict, on 12/10/2008, -0/+9It's ironic because Blagojevich wanted to give a 9-figure tax break to the Tribune if the Tribune fired one of its editors.
Oh wait... - gcnaddict, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7I guess we'll never know.
- arlok789, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7No bailout please
- SemiSarcastic, on 12/10/2008, -0/+7"How do we save newspapers? We have to buy them and read them."
-Andrew Keen - mreade, on 12/09/2008, -0/+6That's a pretty dim silver lining for the employees, but I suppose you have to make the best of a bad situation...
- fitzfan, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5I love how people act like this is a surprise. Newspaper sales and circulation has been declining constantly for the last 2 years. Lay offs have been happening all over the industry, everyone knew it was just a matter of time.
- divinediva, on 12/09/2008, -1/+6If a company goes bankrupt, the equity runs the risk of not being worth much.
- blaket, on 12/10/2008, -0/+5Heck, even the read part isn't important at this point. They'd settle for us just buying them again.
- logpony, on 12/10/2008, -1/+5Why do I get the feeling that late at night while looking over the reports showing that their company is hemorrhaging money, newspaper managers think back to a time when they were told they had to get the newspaper to make money online...
...and all you can hear is the scream of "Oh God! How do I Internet???" - DarkShroud, on 12/10/2008, -0/+4Print isn't dead yet. They have to write something worth reading. It would also help to have a copy online that can be linked to, where the company can sell ad space.
- Qumahlin, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3People are digging him down yet its true. Even large media companies like Conde Nast only now have begun to focus on the web while the print world around them has crumbled...it's not that they didn't see the writing on the wall, its they thought somehow the two media were going to live together each with its own market...they now realize that the market for actual print media is dwindling faster then they could have truly anticipated.
- frieddonuts, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3This really sucks. I have some friends at a local paper owned by the LA Times. Their paper is probably not going to survive this restructuring, even though they were in the black at a local level.
- systemghost, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3So long and thanks for all the words.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Quite the futurist...
- Barackalypse, on 12/10/2008, -1/+4Amusingly enough, Blagojevich finds himself in federal custody on corruption charges:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28139155/ - fitzfan, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Nah, revenue at newspaper companies, such as Tribune, New York Times, etc peaked in 2006.
- catbeller, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2The joys of mergers.
- inactive, on 12/10/2008, -1/+3Zzzzz. If I want Newspaper room layoff drama I'll watch a special edit of the Wire Season 5 (carefully removing the 15 minutes involving police and drug dealers)
- SaffronB77, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2As an employee of one of the main trib papers, we're hearing alot about how we have the power to turn things around, to help be part of the evolution.
I'm usually not pessimistic, but, too little too late. They had their chance years ago to evolve with the rest of the world.
Now if you'll exscuse me, I have a resume to update. - jawagas, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2WAIT, isn't Sam Zell a bounty hunter changlin'?
- vardis, on 12/12/2008, -0/+2The fact that we're all on here proves that newpapers are dead.
- AmyVernon, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2@logpony - unfortunately, you are quite correct. Reporters for years were urging their editors to focus more on the web. But all they could think of was that it was giving away the content, and they didn't want to do it. By the time they got on board, it was too late.
- DustySmith, on 12/10/2008, -2/+4We are actually witnessing history. The print media, which was able to be controlled by a very few people, is dying off, and in its place we have a medium in which everyone who chooses too has just as much opportunity as the next guy to shape opinions. If you ask me, it's an exciting time.
- Rudy165, on 12/10/2008, -1/+2indeed
- Claverhouse, on 12/10/2008, -2/+3Mr. Zell has faced tough situations before, http://www.jewishjournal.com/opinion/article/sam_z ... ; the article ends: '...an enigma, and we have no idea of what he has in mind for the Times.'
I only hope his strong religious identity keeps him sane during this time of crisis. - logpony, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1Thank you. You're exactly right. I mean, yeah, it's great that you can go online and get a huge array of opinions from any single person's blog in the whole world. But mostly that gets you lunatics and partisan hacks at worst, or maybe just terrible reporting at best.
Newsmen aren't necessarily out of a job; I still want a trained reporter to sort out some facts in a decent manner and help citizens get a consensus going. They just need to get their online ***** together. - AmyVernon, on 12/10/2008, -1/+2For the last two years? For much longer.
- AmyVernon, on 12/11/2008, -1/+2You said newspaper sales and circulation. Not revenue. Newspapers sales and circulation have been on the decline for more than two years. Trust me, I know from whence I speak.
- SaffronB77, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1And we're not even doing that right. Many Tribune papers recently went through a redesign. What did the heads upstairs come up with? More color, charts, and now video game reviews.
I have nothing against video game reviews, I love video games. But I don't plan to start getting my reviews from the paper as opposed to an, um, I dunno, GAME SITE.
Dumbing down the paper doesn't reach a new demographic, it pushes away the one it has. During times like these it's not worth the risk. - jfoobar, on 12/10/2008, -0/+1An interesting observation. Yet statistics just published very recently showed, if my memory serves, that only 5% of Americans get their news almost entirely "online" and only another 29% bolster their news consumption with online sources.
I think most of us can agree that the modern day newspaper is somewhat of an anachronism, but that just leaves televsion. If ~65% of the American people getting their news exclusively from TV isn't a sign of the apocalypse, I don't know what is.
On a personal note, I used to deliver the Chicago Trib as a summer job in high school. I always thought it would outlive the Sun-Times. I guess I was wrong. - johnbers, on 02/21/2009, -0/+0Interesting and also sad article.
