This Colgate Toothpaste Packaging Is Awfully Deceptive
consumerist.com — Logan thought this bonus pack of Colgate contained two equally-sized tubes of toothpaste. After all, the boxes are exactly the same size. Yet when he opened the bonus box, he found a smaller box containing a mini tube of toothpaste.

- t3hmyth, on 07/12/2008, -35/+12This isn't a surprise. Goods manufacturers have been doing this for years. Why do you think you get an enormous bag of chips, when the bag is only full halfway?
- Thestormo, on 07/12/2008, -5/+91Because the air makes the chips not crumble as much in transport...
- t3hmyth, on 07/12/2008, -31/+3It's not like you can place air intermittently between chips. Gravity makes the stack up no matter how much air is in the bag. The air is just there to give the consumer the illusion that they're getting more chips.
- Ajajadude, on 07/12/2008, -1/+35Actually, that's pretty much it. It provides a minor amount of protection during shipping. Far more than, say, a vacuumed sealed bag would.
- t3hmyth, on 07/12/2008, -29/+2@Ajajadude
Alright, perhaps there is a pragmatic reason. But that still doesn't mean they're trying to use it to sell more chips. - Murdats, on 07/13/2008, -3/+21@t3hmyth
they are trying to fool people with a well known fact?
the protection reason is the only reason for it, if it fools you into thinking you are buying more its not because thats what they are trying to do, and if you are somehow surprised each time you open a packet of chips to find less then you expected then you are an idiot.
however nothing anyone says will convince you that you aren't right. - unfinite, on 07/13/2008, -0/+11I know last time I bought chips the bag was only half full, but maybe this time I'll get a full one.
*moments later*
Damn, maybe next time. - LoveAndSeagulls, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5yeah thestormo is 100% correct. i once had a bag of fritos with twice the amount of chips than it would normally have and all the chips were crushed -.-
- alex7575, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4Is it me? or is t3hmyth trying really hard to prove himself stupid?
And who the hell is digging him up? That almost worries me more...
- CLShortFuse, on 07/12/2008, -2/+12Because if they try to transport those bags via airplane, if the bags are too small, they will explode once the air pressure changes as they hit 25000ft and millions of dollars worth of potato chips would be lost. The same is said with any air tight thinly sealed package (bags of cereal).
- h4mx0r, on 07/13/2008, -0/+16Oh christ, I'm trying to imagine the day when it starts raining millions of dollars worth of potato chips. I'd be trying to catch them in my mouth and getting as fat as possible.
- GassyTurd, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3Planes are pressurized.
- arcticblue, on 07/13/2008, -1/+8@GassyTurd: The cabin is, but the cargo holds aren't usually pressurized (to my knowledge).
- iDiggIt42, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2@arcticblue, They aren't in most planes. There are, however, a few exceptions.
- Jeepinator, on 07/13/2008, -11/+5Also at the factory they are filled almost to the top. They settle in shipping. It is not a matter of air transport.
- CletusTSJY, on 07/13/2008, -8/+2I like that you've been buried 3 times. Come on Jeepinator, that argument is so ridiculous that I'm actually pissed off. You obviously have no idea about physics and packaging plants.
I hope it's obvious that I'm being sarcastic. - CedEx, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Also, there is a disclaimer actually printed on the package that states specificially that the contents are sold by weight, and not volume and that the contents may have settled.
I guess no one reads the packages?
- CletusTSJY, on 07/13/2008, -8/+2I like that you've been buried 3 times. Come on Jeepinator, that argument is so ridiculous that I'm actually pissed off. You obviously have no idea about physics and packaging plants.
- Rozza, on 07/13/2008, -6/+5that is the most typical fat person thing to complain about
- IllBeBack, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1Good job spreading your incorrect preconceived beliefs.
- SniperZero, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2It doesn't matter the package size you pay for the amount of grams (or what ever measurement unit you use) inside the package.
- ligyron, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1I don't know why people complain about that. It's not like they're ripping you off. You're paying for exactly what you get.
Every chip manufacturer does it, and a lot of their bags are transparent so you can see what you're getting. Only an idiot would open a bag of chips and be disappointed that it's not filled to the top.
- Thestormo, on 07/12/2008, -5/+91Because the air makes the chips not crumble as much in transport...
- Ajajadude, on 07/12/2008, -7/+435Well, it does say the bonus is 4 oz. Just another life lesson in why you should pay attention to the fine print, I suppose. It was clearly marked as a "bonus" pack, not a double pack. I've never once seen a bonus amount of a product to be equal in size to the original.
- DickyT83, on 07/13/2008, -15/+4Honestly though, who cares? It's ***** toothpaste lol
- diktator279, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Digg has a Zero Tolerance policy for screwing consumers
- acid_jazz, on 07/13/2008, -20/+5It's the Colgate Jewish Marketing Team.
- ufia, on 07/13/2008, -1/+49A good consumerist never read the net weight on the box, he just blindly purchase anything based on assumptions. Then he is whining on the internets. Because fool a consumerist once, shame on you. Fool a consumerist.. you can't get fooled again... ?
- kewidogg, on 07/13/2008, -5/+2Thanks G-dub.
- metalhead87, on 07/13/2008, -0/+9Same thing I thought.....it clearly says the bonus tube is only 4 oz.....noticed that as soon as I saw the picture. I will say I don't get why the small tube wasn't just placed in the bonus box.....kinda stupid to put a small box with the small tube into another box.
- SpongeBad, on 07/13/2008, -2/+6The extra box is probably to prevent the tube from sliding around in the larger box. The shifting of the weight would be a dead giveaway to people who didn't bother to read the packaging.
- SpyDerMann, on 07/13/2008, -1/+1However, the Colgate guys could have painted a smaller box inside the big box to reflect the truth inside the packaging.
(Note: At this point I'd say "Fine print my ***", but that just wouldn't sound right). I have it when they have tiny fine prints clarifying an EXTRA-HUGE and BOLD lie.
- pinab, on 07/13/2008, -0/+7He should be glad he got the extra for free.
He got extra toothpaste for free, and he's bitching about it....- mtappenden, on 07/13/2008, -1/+4I think you'll find he paid extra (it says in the article he decided to go for the bonus pack, so presumably it was more expensive), but even so, he''s still a ***** with a tiny tube.
- potisreallygood, on 07/13/2008, -2/+14This guy is a smug little bitch that whines on a website about toothpaste packaging.
- Pappenheimer, on 07/13/2008, -4/+0Well, this certainly is deception. But things in marketing have been like that for decades, only the stupid still fall for that. And this is why it's still being done, because the majority of people IS like that - inobservant and indifferent. Like the lol guy above, for example.
- dOOBiEx213, on 07/13/2008, -0/+4are*
- IllBeBack, on 07/13/2008, -2/+1I think that "inobservant" is even worse than using "IS" incorrectly. At least "IS" is an actual word.
- rynlnk, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2In case anyone cares, "inobservant" is in the dictionary...
- Pappenheimer, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Thanks rynlnk. Yes it is, and this is why I used it in the first place. I was wrong about using singular with "people", and I'm actually glad that someone pointed that out. Talk about the fallacies of the english language... I find it highly illogical, and it is different in my native language, but that's how it is.
- tidu, on 07/13/2008, -0/+11Does that guy have a rape whistle on his keychain?

- bashturd, on 07/13/2008, -17/+274dammnit, I accidentally clicked digg. There is no deception at all here. IT doesn't say twin pack, buy 1 get 1, or anything like that. it clearly says BONUS 4oz. The buyer just needs to pay more attention, or have his mommy do his shopping for him.
- NeonDistraction, on 07/13/2008, -0/+48You do know you can go back and un-digg a previously dugg story, right?
- bashturd, on 07/13/2008, -1/+6nope, but thanks for pointing it out!
- PhilLesh69, on 07/13/2008, -7/+3It's sort of funny, a fluoride consumer not being able to figure out that his next dose of fluoride has a "bonus" of a 4 ounce tube.
Maybe he should just eat all of that toothpaste, and numb his mind even further, and there won't be any problem.- KalvinCoolEdge, on 07/13/2008, -1/+2huh? whats the connection between being a fluoride consumer and stupidity? besides, isn't everyone a consumer? i thought it was in the water supply.. or is that not the case anymore?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3@Kalvin: You'll have to excuse him. There is a certain conspiracy theory that believes flouride is a mind control chemical or something to that effect. They think it's in the water because the big bad government wants you to be stupid so that's why they put flouride in the water.
Not that I doubt the intellectual superiority of something who thinks the number 69 is clever enough to put in their online handle, but I think it's safe to assume Phil has a collection of tin-foil hats and armor or the nutjob equivalent. - KalvinCoolEdge, on 07/13/2008, -2/+1but i thought it was the contrails that were controlling our minds? or is that just the backup for people like Phil who don't brush their teeth?
i had no idea such a conspiracy existed, thank you for educating me SSB. - SolitarySoviet, on 07/13/2008, -3/+3no speed... its not mind control dumb ass its just the fact that fluoride acts as a sedative and effects the brain NO MIND CONTROL..hence the word numb..
its not really that hard to understand, like any drug it has other side effects that target other parts of the body than was intended, if you ingest eye drops they cause diarrhea, high doses of b5 (niacin) cause skin to flush and become super sensitive (pins and needles), hell Viagra is a perfect example it was a drug for something else (heartburn? I dont remember and dont care to wiki it right now) but had other effects on other parts, it just happens that the effect was desirable so they marketed it as an ed drug, if people wanted their brains to be sedated and cognitive functions slowed you know for damn sure they would enhance the effect fluoride has and then market it... but since people think all it does is make teeth stronger thats the angle that is played... do some ***** research before you assume you know everything and start with the tin foil hat pointing... OP said nothing crazy, its all you, you ***** *****. - PhilLesh69, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1SolitarySoviet,
Not only does it have side effects, but apparently is is a good ingredient, in a derivative form, for antidepressant drugs.
Prozac is Fluoxetine hydrochloride.
- NeonDistraction, on 07/13/2008, -0/+48You do know you can go back and un-digg a previously dugg story, right?
- kevman459, on 07/13/2008, -6/+65RAAAAGGGGEEE!
- earthforce1, on 07/13/2008, -26/+81It is still misleading and a sad case of overpackaging, since the smaller tube is boxed inside a larger box. I am not a raving tree hugger, but this is just plain wasteful and unnecessary.
- iignotus, on 07/13/2008, -12/+5It may actually be a case of *saving* trees by re-purposing larger boxes for other tubes of toothpaste, instead of creating a whole production run of smaller boxes just to fit the smaller tube.
- Foureyedave, on 07/13/2008, -1/+8No...that's all wrong.
They are using the full size boxes AND special issue BONUS sized boxes inside. Instead of saving...it's over packaging. Thought to be honest, aside from the "ecological" issues...I see no ethical issues. - ZebZ, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3(Cost of doubleboxing the second tube and bundling two boxes of the same size) < (Cost of bundling two different sized boxes)
The cost and/or configuration of the bundling process is probably the deciding factor. That, or the ability to pack more units into a shipping container.
- Foureyedave, on 07/13/2008, -1/+8No...that's all wrong.
- oneredeye, on 07/13/2008, -11/+6You are a raving tree hugger if you have to think it's wasteful and unnecessary.
- goofygarber, on 07/13/2008, -1/+8As a commenter at the consumerist (correctly) pointed out, having two boxes the same size makes shipping/packing easier; which saves on shipping, fossil fuels etc...
- RizzoFrank, on 07/13/2008, -3/+0RTHB. If it fooled you. Then you're a ***** idiot and deserved to be fooled. Read the ***** box before you purchase.
- utahnkid, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2Tell me why it's misleading and a sad case of over packaging after reading goofygarber's comment.
- LLLSecretChimp, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Wood used for paper and cardboard comes from tree farms. Increase the demand for paper and cardboard, and more tree-farms will be planted to meet the needs. More paper use leads to more trees.
You wouldn't save corn by refusing to eat it. If everybody quit eating corn, farmers would stop planting it, and there'd be less corn. Same deal with paper (except for the eating part.)- ZebZ, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0Or the cardboard could be coming from recycled paper.
- iignotus, on 07/13/2008, -12/+5It may actually be a case of *saving* trees by re-purposing larger boxes for other tubes of toothpaste, instead of creating a whole production run of smaller boxes just to fit the smaller tube.
- diemunkiesdie, on 07/13/2008, -8/+85It's not uncommon for items to be packed together with similar size boxes to make shipping easier/more secure. Plus, it's not like they tried to hide the size of the smaller one, it clearly indicates it is only 4.0 oz!
I think someone's just mad that they didn't read the clearly detailed package first! I know I take my time when I am shopping so I can make smart decisions about the price of products; if you are in a rush you are more prone to make similar mistakes.
Tip: Use the calculator function on your phone to determine how much things cost per ounce.- tnoy, on 07/13/2008, -0/+6Most of big stores (Safeway, Albertsons, Wallgreens) list the cost per oz/quanity/ml/etc now.
It saves me the guesswork trying to figure out if a deal is really a deal.- EpochOne, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1True, but often when you're comparing two similar items (Happens a lot with juice I've noticed), some are in $/Oz, while others are $/lb.
- unfinite, on 07/13/2008, -0/+5Yeah. It's easier to package and ship them when they're a regular shape.
Not to mention putting these up onto the shelves. Stacking boxes is a lot harder with a little ***** box stuck to the side of the boxes you're trying to balance. Why don't they just get rid of boxes all together and everything can be in misshapen piles - /sarcasm.
Also, this just looks more professional. You can see that Colgate wants you to try their product and is offering you a sample of something you maybe wouldn't normally buy. Rather than say, the store tacking on expiring toothpaste just to get rid of it.
- tnoy, on 07/13/2008, -0/+6Most of big stores (Safeway, Albertsons, Wallgreens) list the cost per oz/quanity/ml/etc now.

- Spire3660, on 07/13/2008, -1/+12Any moderately intelligent person would realize pretty quickly that this was probably done more for logistics reasons than anything else. Its easier to ship in the way it was packaged, with 2 identical items instead of an odd shaped one. And yeah what T440 said : Who ***** cares
- CletusTSJY, on 07/13/2008, -0/+6If the people that care about this continue to care about things like this, they will never ever ever ever be happy in life.
- soupdawg30, on 07/13/2008, -1/+16This is ***** dumb.

- Danby123, on 07/13/2008, -7/+2Burn Colgate perhaps.?Yes, Colgate must burn.
- VinnieDaMac, on 07/13/2008, -1/+14It's pretty obvious why they packaged it that way. Packaging too different size boxes would be much harder than packaging it the way they did. Looks like the consumer was just in a rush and wanted to blame someone else for his/her carelessness.
- joemofo214, on 07/13/2008, -1/+10Are people bitching about tooth paste now??
Wow. - tama00, on 07/13/2008, -5/+2what does 4oz mean???
- rodrigo74, on 07/13/2008, -1/+7Four Wizards of Oz were used to produce this tube.
- RizzoFrank, on 07/13/2008, -1/+04 OHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOSSSSS. this person is baby crying about toothpaste.
- olschool82, on 07/13/2008, -6/+4Geez, good for Colgate. Everyone knows that this isn't a new practice, case in point... Car companies give a deal for free gas for a year(or set number of gallons which ever comes first), but this savings is about the same as the rebate they would offer you, so if you think you're getting something for nothing.... you're probably aren't. They pray on the ignorance of the consumer... which is pretty much a safe bet, and i will not take any exception to this.
Im sure i will be dugg down for this... - deeceefar2, on 07/13/2008, -0/+6That is why I love the cost per unit volume that many grocery stores have on the price labels. If you are unsure if the larger box item is a better deal read the tag on the shelf and see if it has the cost per oz or whatever way it measures. Then you'll know if it is a better deal.
- PilotHead, on 07/13/2008, -1/+0doing math? I should digg you down!............but i won't
- EpochOne, on 07/13/2008, -0/+0Companies are starting to mix and match different units in their Price per Unit tags though. Some things such as juice are in $/Oz (fluid) while other Juices on the same shelf and in the same packaging are in $/lb. Both walgreens and walmart do this now.
- gta3mobster, on 07/13/2008, -0/+15The reason the packaging is the same size is so it'll fit on the shelf better. Plus when packaging is shrink wrapped with two different sized boxes they tend to break a lot more often.
- wc3452, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2The other thing is that it's two different types of toothpastes. When has a double pack ever come with two different types of toothpaste? "I'm getting regular Colgate Total and Advanced Clean Total! What a great deal!" Buried for being a whiner.
- Jadinlee, on 07/13/2008, -2/+2These aren't always packaged together. In my local Target the "additional" tube was placed on the shelf and sold separately. The aisle was clearly organized to have all the sizes (and corresponding box sizes) displayed together. Knowing that people would not check the weight and simply pick based on box size... it was clearly misleading and overpriced. The store "wanted" you to think you bought a larger size and charged roughly the same price as the larger size. Like most crap-ware business practices, the trick is to rip you off within that threshold of it not being worth it to return or protest the ripoff. Then, you just do it in bulk and you make lots of $$.
Remember, just because a disclaimer is "technically" present, doesn't mean that the practice isn't deceptive. Just look at infomercials, and psychic hot lines if you want good examples.- ace429k, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1whats he saying i dont wanna read it all.

- transient0, on 07/13/2008, -4/+2It amazes me that corporations will do anything to save a half a cent on something.
- salculd, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Why? When you propagate that half cent through an entire manufacturing run, it can add up enormously.
- Kidtuf, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Case and point: Cell phone taxes.
Look at your cell phone bill next time and you should see a tax for "Regulatory Programs Fee". Companies claim that fee is to recoup the cost of government regulations, but a large portion of that is covered elsewhere. Now imagine if you will that this .86 fee is charged monthly to all 30 million customers.
Even at a fraction of of that .86, the company makes millions every month.

IT'S FREE, JACKASS! - DigxDug, on 07/13/2008, -4/+3This is retarded, buried.
It says right on the package 4oz.
And it's toothpaste.
Cry more. - headzoo, on 07/13/2008, -2/+8Possible swindle aside, I'll have to cite Colgate for irresponsible packaging. I mean.. a package inside of a package?
What a waste. - Archee, on 07/13/2008, -1/+3wtf it's just toothpaste.
- zephyrnug, on 07/13/2008, -3/+1that's like opening a bag of chips to find it's only 1/2 full...

- PhilLesh69, on 07/13/2008, -0/+3except the chip company prints on the side of the bag, "sold by weight, not volume"
- haral, on 07/13/2008, -2/+3Burried as very very lame...
- deadbaby, on 07/13/2008, -0/+1Slightly deceptive -- it does say the size if you bother to look. The thing is if Colgate doesn't do it, someone else will and dumb consumers will just grab the biggest box even if it is deceptive.
- oneredeye, on 07/13/2008, -1/+12That's not deceptive. The box says 4 oz. and contains 4 oz. of toothpaste. Just because it says 4 oz. twice doesn't mean it contains 8 ounces.
I also notice the outer box has the exact same label as the inner box right up to the "Bonus" label. They just used the bigger box to make it fit more uniformly in the larger packages they send to retailers. - Kumaku, on 07/13/2008, -0/+7So this guy can't read a box and somehow deserves millions of viewers pitying him?
- weeman43302, on 07/13/2008, -0/+2millions? really?
