http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=8016634 - boulder555, on 07/07/2009, -1/+31Unlike the federal government, nearly every state is legally required to balance its budget.
- cubicledrone, on 07/08/2009, -3/+30In California, the public schools are budgeted $8000 per student. That's $240,000 per classroom. Teachers make $60,000 a year. We borrow money to build classrooms. Teachers pay for supplies. The textbooks are decades out of date. All the extracurricular activities raise their own money. The librarians are all being fired (we don't pay for liberal arts round heah). Schools don't have field trips any more.
Where is the other $180,000 per classroom? - inactive, on 07/08/2009, -6/+29""It's a revenue problem, not a spending problem," said Elizabeth McNichol, a senior fellow at the center."
seriously Elizabeth? - Bloodwine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+17Asst. Principals, Asst. Superintendents, and a crapload of other near-useless administrators.
- Hillsfar, on 07/07/2009, -4/+20So while California has a $28 billion budget deficit, Uncle Sam (as in Congress and Bush and Obama and the Treasury) gave AIG over $120 billion. Why? To pay Goldman Sachs and Deutsch Bank, among others...
- brakes4turtles, on 07/08/2009, -1/+16New carpeting, hooking up wireless internet, oh and vacations for principals and administrators.
- plhofmei, on 07/07/2009, -1/+14What?! No Michigan?!
Wow -- people in our government (I know, I work there) are saying things are soooo bad. I was surprised to find out we didn't make the list. - NightC, on 07/08/2009, -1/+14I live in NJ, and let me tell you, the politicians steal more then you could possibly believe. That is no joke either, from the mayor's on up to the governor himself they have been sapping us dry for decades. Our governor, Corzine, was in the Senate for something like 20 years before becoming governor, and he promised to "fix corruption" Dude... where were you in the Senate? Why didn't you "fix corruption" when you were there?!? In other words, he is just part of the problem and we put him in a higher office to steal higher quantities of money. Some road projects take 4 or 5 times as long just so they can milk more money from the system. The main road in my city of 85,000 people took a year to fix when it should have taken a few months. Every chance they get, they lie, cheat, and steal.
- brooksieboy, on 07/07/2009, -2/+15you would think michigan would be worse than califorinia. With gm going under we are gonna have some serious problems
- kingnova, on 07/08/2009, -0/+10Or you could look it up, rather than pulling numbers out of thin air:
"The average teacher salary last year was $65,808, an increase of 3.4 percent from 2007, according to new state figures. "

Google and 30 seconds is your friend. google california school administration costs as well... - Richandler, on 07/08/2009, -2/+12It's amazing that California spends so much money compared to other states. What the hell do we get for it all? Nothing spectacular from what I see. There needs to be so many cuts made. There cannot be so many billions spent will little visible result with there being a ton of wasteful spending.
- paperclipsNsoup, on 07/08/2009, -1/+10Are you kidding, California has the highest population of any state. The highest number of illegal immigrants (Most of whom don't pay taxes), and I think we are the 3rd largest state so there's a lot of land to pave (Roads/Highways/Freeways).
Granted a huge amount is thrown away through corruption and bureaucracy. But don't underestimate the massive amount of honest spending California has.
That being said the other main problem is look who's been in charge... The Governator, and Grey Davis were the last two douche bags in charge.
Support AB390, bring in more money for the state (Before corruption and wasteful spending sucks it dry). - Bloodwine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+9You blame Governator, but not the CA state congress? Really?
- inactive, on 07/08/2009, -0/+8I'm glad California can finally be #1 at something again...
- mattowan, on 07/08/2009, -3/+1190% of those states have something in common, but I can't figure out what it is.
- paperclipsNsoup, on 07/08/2009, -0/+7California is #1!!! Woo... wait
- niradg, on 07/08/2009, -7/+14they pay far more in federal taxes than they get back
- draive, on 07/08/2009, -1/+8Texas has a huge state and large population as well. Texas has a ton of illegal immigrants. Texas is excellent financial shape compared to the other 49.
California needs a swift kick in the ass and wake up and control their spending. Period. - JoeLinux117, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6Hmm... I don't see Florida, Texas or New Mexico up there
- AbominableHoman, on 07/08/2009, -1/+7(D). D something. Is it damned?
- Pseudorious, on 07/08/2009, -1/+7So, when spending grows at several times the rate of inflation and population without a noticeable improvement in conditions, it's not a problem?
- wwwdot1jesdotus, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6Hey, we in CA have funerals to pay for. Who's gonna pay for all those overpriced celebrity funerals if the people don't?
- oldhick, on 07/08/2009, -1/+7Pointlessly and blindly throwing away their money... Well done!
- Brooks007, on 07/08/2009, -0/+6They are all Blue or Purple states... there are no red states expect Alaska which is not really in the same amount of trouble because they actually have money saved for a rainy day.
- derekmas10, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5Glad to see Vermont made it in the top 10... oh wait. So THAT'S what happened to all the rest areas.
- Remmiz, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5The amount of people that would purchase from a store would be very large though...a lot more than you think.
- Jakeman21co, on 07/08/2009, -6/+11Maybe California shouldn't have paid 4.5M for Michael Jackson's memorial service. Spending money they never had.
- JimSwarthow, on 07/08/2009, -0/+5and you're clueless. seriously.
- Bloodwine, on 07/08/2009, -5/+9In before a Californian starts blaming all their woes on the red states, because California sends more to the Federal government than they get back.
- domlachowicz, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4I came here to say the same thing. The figure's only 70%, though. The red states are generally the ones above $1, and have relatively small populations. The blue states, however, generally are huge, and are getting screwed...
California - $0.78 on the dollar
Arizona - $1.19
Nevada - $0.65
Illinois - $0.75
New York - $0.79
Alaska - $1.84
New Jersey - $0.61
Oregon - $0.93
Vermont - $1.08
Washington - $0.88
http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/266.html - sndream, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4In California, it's definitely a spending problem, drop in revenue only add on that.
- Bloodwine, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4St. Louis was #4 in 2008, not #1.
I also wonder how much of St. Louis' crime is due to East St. Louis, which is in Illinois, not Missouri. - bu4ik, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4Quote of the Day: "It's a revenue problem, not a spending problem".
Two sides of the same coin. Funny how citizens are expected to cut back in spending when their revenue is cut, but the states aren't. Nice double standard. Hypocrisy at it's finest.
Nanny States FTL! - indyattic, on 07/08/2009, -0/+490% of them didn't have a "rainy day" fund, maybe?
- JoeLinux117, on 07/08/2009, -0/+480% of them are blue. And not because they're sad...
- whaleyboy69, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4In California the money primarily goes for "overhead" - people like the Deputy Superintendents who do who knows what and make $300,000 per year (plus car allowances). This $300K is before their generous retirement plans. I can't imagine how much the Superintendents make. This is an outrage. They have succeeded in delivering extremely low quality education (48th out of 50 states) while padding their wallets. *****.
Frankly, I feel sorry for the teachers. I feel even sorrier for the students. - 380ppm, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4people in blue states make more money because the cost of living is higher, thus driving up wage inflation.
- thefox84, on 07/08/2009, -2/+6Then there's the Federal Government's shortfall.. which is probably all of those debts combined multiplied by 20.
- odnaryperson, on 07/08/2009, -0/+4nearly every state? are there some states who arent?
- sodade, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I love how some ***** diggs this down - reality has an anti-douchebag bias?
- Volkov137, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3We didn't make the list because it is in our constitution that we must carry a balanced budget. Taxes must be raised, or programs must be cut.
Trust me, we are in ***** for shape even though we legally cannot borrow to pay for the government. However, this may benefit us in the end. - SocialPoison, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3It's written into most (all?) of their constitutions. However, there are sometimes way to finagle around it. Some analysis I read said Washington (state) doesn't HAVE to balance its budget if it doesn't want to because of (long winded constitutional loophole explanation I didn't understand here)
- FutureGuy, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3CA is #1 is many things, this one it could have done without.
- kingnova, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Ding ding ding! Administration costs. Oregon is on the list, and they have even higher school administration costs. The tax money goes not to the classroom, but to the overabundance of admin flunkies.
- pantsperch, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3Yep, you're right, all of Texas, a state larger than France is a complete *****. That sucky Palo Duro Canyon blows, and really, ***** the Big Thicket or sunsets over the Hill Country.
Everyone knows the L.A. Basin is so so much more of a beautiful glistening treasure with such beautiful pristine atmosphere.
Come on, brochief, you know that there are beautiful things in both states, they're both ***** gigantic.
California is a huge necessity to the welfare of the US which is why the whiny little ***** on both sides, the liberals who want everything paid for by the state and the conservatives who flat out refuse to raise taxes are digging their own graves, and the rest of us are going to have to be on the hook for subsidizing their little piss war. California produce is just too ***** good. - kingmanic, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3We're doing fine. As a percentage of GDP our deficit is one of the smallest in the western nations. Our bank system is still sending credit where it's needed. I live in Alberta. Our provincial deficits vary widely but my home province is similar to Alaska. We have a huge slush fund to cover the shortfall for a while. We just need natural gas prices to go up a bit and my province will be right as rain. Although my premier is taking the summer dip in natural gas prices and the recession as a excuse to axe social services. He's a GOP style rural social conservative. He may well spark the first ruling party change in Alberta in 38 years.
- FXNGLAS, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3I'm from NJ and feel your pain. Proud to say at the end of the year I should be gone and up to MA. I'm sick of feeding the pigs in Trenton with my hard earned money.
- cenobyte40k, on 07/08/2009, -0/+3anyone have a list of where all 50states stand? That would be worth looking at.
