- M4rx15t, on 03/20/2009, -11/+56It is truely sad that people will not take the time to read this article and it is no surprise that none of them have even tried reading Marx. How are we ever going to get out of the slump we are in if people are not even willing to read something longer than a cracked article?
The article is actually a pretty good read, and Das Kapital in all of its stale, long winded analysis is a very compelling piece of work, which is very pressing considering the state of todays economy. - CarStan, on 03/20/2009, -13/+51i hate Stalin and other communist dictators for ruining Marx' and Engels name.
They offered great insight into the workings of the capitalistic economy of their times. They were right with many of their observations, but sadly they presented wrong solutions and greatly underestimated the corruptablity of socialistic leaders. - TheNik, on 03/20/2009, -5/+43I find it both hilarious and disappointing that people are commenting that this article is "too long." Have any of you guys actually read a reputable magazine before?
- CarStan, on 03/20/2009, -7/+44you cant hardly blame Marx for Leninism and not at all for Stalinism. Marx tried to think of a way to make the world a better place for everyone, i doubt that killing millions of your own people just for the sake of making a point was something he would have approved of.
- JellyFish62, on 03/20/2009, -5/+37Soon we'll realize everything Karl Marx said about communism was wrong and everything he said about capitalism was right.
- MasterJoefus, on 03/20/2009, -16/+46 "You may remember that in 1851 the New York Herald Tribune under the sponsorship and publishing of Horace Greeley, employed as its London correspondent an obscure journalist by the name of Karl Marx.
We are told that foreign correspondent Marx, stone broke, and with a family ill and undernourished, constantly appealed to Greeley and managing editor Charles Dana for an increase in his munificent salary of $5 per installment, a salary which he and Engels ungratefully labeled as the "lousiest petty bourgeois cheating."
But when all his financial appeals were refused, Marx looked around for other means of livelihood and fame, eventually terminating his relationship with the Tribune and devoting his talents full time to the cause that would bequeath the world the seeds of Leninism, Stalinism, revolution and the cold war.
If only this capitalistic New York newspaper had treated him more kindly; if only Marx had remained a foreign correspondent, history might have been different. And I hope all publishers will bear this lesson in mind the next time they receive a poverty-stricken appeal for a small increase in the expense account from an obscure newspaper man." - John F. Kennedy, 35th President.
Take *that*, Karl Marx - thespiff, on 03/20/2009, -6/+35We don't care what socialism is, we just know it's bad, and need someone to tell us who is socialist and who is not so that we know who to hate/fear. Why inform ourselves when so many others are willing to think for us?
- Licurgo, on 03/20/2009, -8/+36"my workers are asking a raise, time for a recession"
- TempusEdax, on 03/20/2009, -0/+26Please actually read the article (and probably some Marx) before commenting. This isn't some kind of communist propaganda piece, its an academic discussion of how Marx's ideas are still relevant today (and they are).
- Kriegskamerad, on 03/20/2009, -10/+34Why won't any one take this seriously? Karl Marx had some great insights even on this current economic crisis, he didn't write to slam capitalism or the free market, or even to glorify socialist revolution, he merely predicted it would happen. A lot of the things he predicted would happen in the capitalist market are happening, the alienation of the lower classes, the pushing of middle classes into the lower classes, and some of the others mentioned in the artical. True he doesn't have it 100% right but maybe you should look beyond the Communist Manifesto and look a some of his greater works such a Das Kapital, which has some great intellectual input on capitalist economics.
- jonlarge, on 03/20/2009, -2/+23The article's biggest problem is not its length, but the fact that, in all its ramblings, Hitchens never really makes a point.
Obviously Karl Marx was aware of capitalism and praised certain aspects of it (its encouragement of innovation, for example). Marx also failed in his attempt to explain the inter-workings of the economy because of his anti-capitalist bias.
So what? What does any of this have to do with our economy today? - M4rx15t, on 03/20/2009, -0/+20No, its the age of A.D.D. and anything longer than a 140 character twitter post is far too long to hold anybody's attention.
- geoken, on 03/20/2009, -7/+27"capitalistic New York newspaper had treated him more kindly"
Isn't that an oxymoron? Doesn't it go without saying that communism wouldn't have existed if capitalists payed workers more during the industrial revolution? - geoken, on 03/20/2009, -3/+23It makes no sense to me when people dismiss him because they are so socialized against Communism. If I believe something I usually want to hear what the biggest detractor has to say. When I'm on New Egg, I usually pay extra attention to the guys throwing out 1 star(egg) ratings.
- 10ofDiamonds, on 03/20/2009, -2/+21Did anyone commenting actually read the article?
Also Christopher Hitchens is awsome, even if he is an arrogant prick. - sodade, on 03/20/2009, -6/+21as if our "capitalistic" leaders aren't just as corrupt...
- heresy_fnord, on 03/20/2009, -0/+14Me not like do stuff cause me thinks internets are too hard!!!
- ogleby, on 03/20/2009, -2/+16Witty, but I read a lot of Marx when I wanted to know what communism was really supposed to be about, and I found that, unfortunately, the only things Marx himself said about communism were so extremely abstract you could never pin him down as right or wrong. Philosophers all suck that way. Good riddance to the 19th century, I say.
- TCrux, on 03/20/2009, -8/+21Those men perverted the idea of communism.
- theodenking, on 03/20/2009, -4/+16And Darwin's work predates genetics, that doesn't mean it's not relevant to biologists any more.
- zeitgueist, on 03/20/2009, -2/+14Yes why can't everything be written to an 8th grade reading level, like USA today?
- EarlOfLade, on 03/20/2009, -0/+12In other words: It takes more time to read the article than there are minutes between two commercial segments on TV.
- geoken, on 03/20/2009, -9/+20No it doesn't. His theories scale pretty well even in situations where an entire country could be labeled bourgeoisie.
- catbeller, on 03/20/2009, -2/+12Just another fascist dictator pretending to be something else.
- ogleby, on 03/20/2009, -6/+16When communism starves people, it's genocide. When capitalism does it, it's just tough luck.
- M4rx15t, on 03/20/2009, -2/+12I am so tired of people painting with broad brushes, making crackpot assumptions and using lame buzzwords to try to get an emotional response... can people not discuss things like rational human beings?
Do we really need to use fear to scare people into thinking our way? Why can't people accept that fact that Capitalism is not a perfect system and that we need to take a step back and look at how we conduct ourselves and perhaps make a change? - darkheritage, on 03/20/2009, -0/+10But yet they will take the time to sit here and read all 50+ comments.... Odd how that works.
- thelandlady, on 03/20/2009, -5/+14Shows just how warped Kennedy's opinion of those people really are. Comparing Karl Marx's philosophy to Stalin and what happened during the cold war is highly unjustified. Stalin was not a Marxist...he was more akin to dictator than a true communist leader.
- M4rx15t, on 03/20/2009, -7/+16RIGHT because Das Kapital clearly is the Communist Manifesto... I am simply stating that Das Kapital (which you clearly have no idea about) is a pressing work and it adequately shines a light on the flaws in capitalism.
Throwing Obama into the mix does not even make sense, its a low brow tactic perpetuated by lame media outlets such as Fox News... please do not try to connect Obama to Marx... it is a lame fallacy that even the most laid back socialist laughs at.
I would also like to add that the millions murdered in the so called name of socialism were sins committed by power hungry men. Trying to tie the murder of millions of people to an IDEA is like blaming Christianity and Islam for the millions upon millions killed in all the religious wars through out history. IDEAS are not to blame, human beings are. - EthanahtE, on 03/20/2009, -3/+12People won't take it seriously because they have been reared from their birth to hate communism.
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -8/+16So...he was the one with the horn, or was that Zeppo?
- bjornski, on 03/20/2009, -0/+8It's sad, but it's the truth. It's called "Greed". The sooner you accept it, the better.
Not better as in the "being submissive to it" good, but it will give you a realization as to where to start your thinking from. - TheNik, on 03/20/2009, -1/+9You do understand that periodicals make up a significant portion of where "original sources" come from, right? A magazine or journal (well, ones like The Atlantic) helps you understand various ways of thinking about a subject to help you develop a broader perspective. By studying through only one source, even if it's a primary source, you create a very linear opinion. There's absolutely no way you could fully grasp a concept without first hearing what other people think.
- noumuon, on 03/20/2009, -8/+15"The man taught that it was acceptable to sacrifice individuals for the collective."
is this a troll or do you seriously believe this *****? - EthanahtE, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6Why would you go on a site that gives you the tools to read articles, and then complain about having to read those articles?
- inactive, on 03/20/2009, -0/+6reading is un-American, we should inform Homeland security of AquaOSX
- LokitheComplex, on 03/20/2009, -8/+14Are you suggesting no one starves under capitalism?
- Hetman, on 03/20/2009, -3/+9Berating a man because he is intellegent. I dunno what to say do you. Why do you have a problem with intellegent people. We need more of them, not less.
- robbiedo, on 03/20/2009, -1/+6Karl Marx wrote some intriguing critiques of capitalism. Unfortunately people throw the baby out with the bathwater when reading his work.
Unfortunately, too many people have no real understanding of his work. Do not place the man in his time or place, nor separate his analysis from political movement.
Obvioulsly Marxist-Lennism was a horrific failure. That does not mean Marx did not have valid and insightful criticism of Capitalism. - jerbaker, on 03/20/2009, -3/+8I think that's the point: Communism is the bastard child created by the greed of capitalism. If capitalists could restrain their greed, perhaps communism wouldn't have been born.
- katorga, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5Hitchen's may be an arrogant, crusty old poseur, but he has a tip top reading list in that article. The 18th Brumaire of Louis Bonaparte is excellent. I have not read that since college, and it inspired me to grab a copy today. Bahro, Havel, Heidigger, Schumpeter are all worthy reads.
- Grin23, on 03/20/2009, -2/+6Marx never said anyone would revolt. he predicts capitalism will be a victim of its own inconsistencies. He also says that you cant go straight from feudalism to communism, which is why China and Russia failed as communist states. he mentions that once capitalism fails people would opt to implement a socialist society which would in time evolve into a communist society. all this made possible thanks to the theory of dialectic historical materialism.
- kukyona, on 03/20/2009, -3/+7@roodammy44
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."
What could possibly justify such a statement if not a morality that accepted that the collective was more important the individuals that make up its parts? - Grin23, on 03/20/2009, -2/+6The author failed to really touch on that. Read the third Volume of Das Kapital. Its where Marx writes his predicitoins about the fall of capitalism.
- kukyona, on 03/20/2009, -0/+4I think you are confusing it with mercantilism, or corporatism. Laissez-faire would let them fall straight on their asses.
- Grin23, on 03/20/2009, -3/+7It's not hitchens fault you failed your high school english class.
- roodammy44, on 03/20/2009, -5/+9jcr - Please show me where he wrote that. It doesn't sound anything like what I've read.
- zeitgueist, on 03/20/2009, -4/+8What? Phil Gramm was a GOP member.
Oh wait, you think mortgages caused the meltdown, not banks taking huge risks based the mortgage market never going down. LOL. - diggduggjoe, on 03/20/2009, -1/+5No one deserves to starve, many communities and charities will see help people. The reality is we do not have a capitalistic system. What we are seeing is a failure of the socialism already installed. The housing bubble is not the result of capitalism, but of social programs designed to make things more fair.
- bjornski, on 03/20/2009, -4/+8You must be a Limbaugh listener then...
