Doug - HuskyPuzzle, on 08/26/2008, -1/+8Yeah, I'm so sick of filling out profiles and "giving some life to them", that it's hard for me to ever answer the question of "what kind of music do you like", anymore. Social networks for most people, are for keeping in touch wit those that already know what kind of music they like.
- djpray2k, on 08/27/2008, -0/+6What's up with all the comments above mine? Do people think this stuff actualy works? Idiots.
- diabolicedict, on 08/27/2008, -0/+5I think picking an intuitive URL needs to be included in the list.
Sta.rtup.biz, how would you describe this? "My URL is s-tuh dot ar-top dot biz" or "My URL is Startup.biz, with dot between sta and artup". FAIL. - plasmoske, on 08/27/2008, -1/+6wow a lot of spam bots on tonight
- pault107, on 08/27/2008, -0/+4Dugg. Let's all Digg Doug.
- WardOnTheWeb, on 08/27/2008, -0/+3I'd put emphasis on the, "Too Much Hype," point. Consider how shameless self-promotion and propaganda are received in social media circles. Behavior like that will quickly get you buried, downmodded, unfriended, blocked, mocked, ridiculed, flamed, stabbed, and shot by the friendly folks who inhabit the social media space.
It's like I always say. Marketing is about generating interest. Social media is about conversation. Social media marketing is about generating interest through conversation. Businesses that learn the difference will do well; businesses that don't get it will do more harm than good by trying. - kiwigal, on 08/26/2008, -2/+4I think its easy to get carried away and this just lets us know balance is always advantageous at all times. We all need a life after we work on net.
- dilbert, on 08/27/2008, -1/+2Hey, it worked! I just blocked you, diaboliceditct.
- AndrewTerry, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1The second comment on the site (from Dana at Gregory FCA) adds more substance than the article itself...
- CaptainChunk, on 09/12/2008, -0/+0I think this article really applies to professional networking. Some of the older people who are starting to explore business networking are very likely to make some of these mistakes. They may be reluctant to post some of their personal interests to make their profiles more interesting, because they think it needs to be a dry business introduction.
Good article. - Audiperez, on 09/16/2008, -0/+0Good content can apply to more than one topic. These suggestions are just good business practices. Be Yourself is the one that sticks to me like white on rice. I've been in sales for 10 years and my success comes from being able to relate and being likeable. Knowledge of the product/service was just a tool.
- socialmediap, on 11/02/2008, -0/+0These are really good pointers for business owners. I also recommend to my clients that they try not to spread themselves too thin. Pick a few sites that seem like a good fit and build a solid presence in them. It is also important to follow a site's terms of use closely. For instance, know the difference between a Facebook profile (for real people) and a Facebook page (for business). This way a business is not misrepresenting themselves as "personas" as some social media "experts" suggest. The people who use these sites know when they are being duped, so it is best to be authentic.
- rcras, on 09/11/2008, -0/+0I'm user on every single social network site out there, I personally use the sites as a way to grab advice from users and other professionals that are in the similar position. The point "Too Little Personality" is right on, making a profile more personal will definitely make other users engage with you easier.
- LBcreative, on 08/29/2008, -0/+0A basic article? Yes, but to those who are unfamiliar with social media marketing, it's a good, quick overview of what not to do.
- Remlapw, on 02/13/2009, -0/+0there will always be mistakes thats for sure there's no way to deny it... nobody is perfect and facebook is no exception

- dilbert, on 08/27/2008, -4/+2Next to the "Is [USER] being offensive?" there should be a "Is [USER] spamming?" button/link.
- dilbert, on 08/27/2008, -4/+1Next to the "Is 'USER' being offensive? Report it." there should be a "Is 'USER' spamming? Report it." button/link.
- pattyanniek, on 08/26/2008, -7/+3This I didn't know , am starting out , learning all I can about the Internet and websites to sell and help others get what they need from it. I enjoy it of course, meaning those that I help Get frustrated when they don't understand how they can keep their website going and bring in the people they are looking to sell what they are selling to , this is something worth knowing . And its because ot the social network am part of. Super great!
- StigNordas, on 08/26/2008, -6/+1common sense, thanks!
- chenino, on 08/26/2008, -5/+0I agree with this article. I have only recently begun social network marketing and I am taking time to develop a relationship with my fiends. I have discovered many people in my area of work and some are already asking me about what I do and what I have to offer. When I am interested in other people they become interested in me. The great benefit is not only am I creating a network of like minded friends I am meeting such interesting people from all over the world.

gallery art suzana villaverde - victoriaskin, on 08/26/2008, -9/+2I really enjoyed this article and Sta.rtup.biz has offered excellent advice and I try to use them in my own skincare business blog. As a result, I have experienced a lot of traffic to my blog and also to my website. As my content continues to be picked up by other sites, its interesting to talk to my customers and find that they have read my personal stories and found the content compelling enough that they decided to join my business team and/or purchase the products. It’s a fabulous way to reach others in a way that is non-intrusive, allowing them to read and absorb information before they make an educated purchase. http://victoriaskincare.blogspot.com

http://www.zoom4cash.com - rdlmorgan, on 08/26/2008, -12/+0This article is great! I'm a member of Sta.rtup.biz and I've found it to be the best place to connect with other business people. The sharing of knowledge and friendship is like no other.
I've used social marketing for my safety and security website. It's important for me to interact with potential customers so they can find out who I am, build trust in me and my business and learn about my business philosophy.
It can be time consuming but it's virtually cost free. It makes doing business on the internet a little more personal and I like that.
