Cringley makes an interesting point that by government mandating some fairly minor energy saving changes (in this case, outlawing incandescent bulbs in favor of CFLs) the synergies in the US commerce system would more than offset things like the coming recession that Congress is trying to forestall with $700 Billion bale-out.
