- guitarh3ro, on 11/07/2009, -8/+246I'm 19, and I have been trying for a very, very long time to get a job. I lost my job back in January when Circuit City announced it was going to shut down. I've applied at so many places, I couldn't even begin to tell you how many. I've had maybe three interviews, and I did nothing wrong with any of them, but they never called back, and whenever I tried to reach them they blew me off. I've even applied for fast food. But nothing. I can't get through to anyone. No one will hire me. Many places I tried to apply at wouldn't even take my application and stated that they haven't even so much as glanced at any applications for over six months.
It's horrible out there. For those of you that have a job, you really don't know how lucky you are. And I'm not the only one. I have met many other people in the same predicament I'm in, many even worse off.
It eventually gets to a point... a feeling of hopelessness, that there isn't any point in trying anymore.
Just thought I'd give you an idea of what it's really like. I know there may be diggers far off worse than I am, but I figured I'd share my story anyway. - homercles337, on 11/06/2009, -10/+194I hate these unemployment numbers--the government has been cooking them for decades. Add 5-8% to get a more realistic number.
- Atario, on 11/07/2009, -19/+194Attention please:
UNEMPLOYMENT IS A TRAILING INDICATOR.
It moves /after/ stuff has happened. - inactive, on 11/07/2009, -22/+150National unemployment is actually 22%.
The one thing we DO know is the government lies consistently..
I trust ShadowStats before the liars and thieves.

- Tyrghast, on 11/07/2009, -1/+58I'm 20, had a good job repairing cell phones but was laid off in Jan.
Been delivering pizza since then, and working for tips is absolutely horrible not to mention my car is taking a beating and I can't afford the new tires and brakes it desperately needs. I haven't stopped seeking new jobs either, the job market is just really in the ***** right now. Fortunately I've been able to move back in with my parents but that's merely a testament to how poorly my current job pays (5.50 an hour + tips, it's absolutely criminal that companies can get away with paying below minimum wages)
It's not because we don't want to work. All I want more than anything right now is a job that pays a living wage (and you can't live on minimum wage, which is absolute *****; no working man should be paid barely enough to stay afloat). - pimpofpixels, on 11/07/2009, -6/+61It's beginning to look like the Military Industrial Complex was merely replaced by the banking cartels.

In 1994, our government changed the way in which it measured unemployment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_Population_Su ...
It has since used a U3 official unemployment measurement which is gives a lower number. Using their own previous polling method, unemployment is far about 10%. Considering even more factors the government excludes(see the same wiki link), it would be around 22%.

- GauteHauk, on 11/07/2009, -3/+41Unemployment is something that a person earns. There's nothing wrong with collecting on it because you lost your job.
- scottpigeon, on 11/07/2009, -0/+35I know how that goes. After 8 years in the Army, I got out and sent about 80 resumes. Not even Wal-mart ever gave me an interview. Got about 4 interviews through Craigslist; all turned out to be temp agencies that did nothing but collect my info. One turned me down for a low level entry access security position, despite me being NCOIC of over 60 convoys in Iraq and doing entry access at a command headquarters in Uzbekistan. The fresh out of college HR rep with a chip on her shoulder and too much perfume wouldn't even forward my resume to their client. I tried reasoning with her but I don't think she understood the subject matter, or has negative preconceived notions of veterans. I ended up doing hard labor for $7 bucks an hour through another temp agency. Then we had to compete for our jobs with some Mexicans they brought in, and had living in a spare office on-site. God bless America!
Cool story bro, I know. - UnFriendlyFire, on 11/06/2009, -5/+40It's not 1 in 30, not everyone in America is employable. It's more like 1 in 60 or so.

- NorthMass, on 11/07/2009, -3/+31i hear u sir, i thankfully have a job but there are no jobs available besides basic fast food jobs and Wal-Mart type jobs. jobs that typically only 16-22 year old high school/college students seek, yet these are the jobs that now everyone is seeking because there are almost none to be found.
good luck dude - superkendall, on 11/07/2009, -6/+33Unfortunately being young you are really screwed right now - companies only want experienced workers until they can see a future where they will not be taxed like hell for every employee they take on. College graduates actually have some really high unemployment figure at the moment, around 30% or so if I recall.
You want jobs to come back, back fiscally conservative candidates that understand small businesses (and that could be either Democratic or Republican candidates). - superkendall, on 11/07/2009, -1/+25Old story? It's 10.2% now, in October....

/s - LarkStew, on 11/07/2009, -0/+18I'm 38, made redundant from my job as a software engineer 2 days before last Christmas, been looking all year. Had six interviews and all of them said no. Just the last few weeks I've been starting to get major depressed about it. So now I reckon I'm just going to stop looking and try to get by as best I can till things pick up again.
Isn't it strange how everything has gone to ***** since 2000? We had the World Trade Center attacks, all the terrorists crap, war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the worst recession since the 1930s... can we send this century back and get a better one please? - lowdose, on 11/07/2009, -0/+17Hello, you could probably do the brakes yourself. Brake pads are not terribly expensive. If the are disc brakes you will need a large C-clamp to push the piston back into the caliper. If they are drum brakes it gets a little more complicated with the many springs inside of it (get a spring kit if when doing drum brakes, it is easier that way).
Don't wait too long to do your brakes or you could be looking at new rotors.

I've got a business that I'd like to start that would hire many people, but I'm waiting for the government to provide the people with healthcare so I don't have to. Tying healthcare to employment is ***** LAME. - bigwhitecock, on 11/07/2009, -0/+16I had a similar experience when I got out of the Marines like 15 years ago. Couldn't find a civilian security job even though I used to guard nuclear missiles. One interviewer said they didn't like to hire vets because they felt they were too aggressive and/or intimidating on the job. Hell most of the security guards at my office are fat black women.
