- fkr3, on 10/12/2007, -7/+201"It was an honest mistake, and the store has done everything it can to credit the account," the Burger King general manage said.
Teen working mind-numbing job makes mistake, store fixes problem, and we all lived happily ever after except the consumerist who need a villain. - Sphonix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+77How the hell did the person press the extra 8, 5, and 4 on the end?!
I can understand $864 being run up, but 8648.54 that is at least an extra three buttons... - doctorfungi, on 10/12/2007, -8/+73"Ding fries are done"
- chuckpenzone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63She didn't exactly "have it her way"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49is THAT what annually means!
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -9/+44Next time read your damn receipts!!
- 6ixed, on 10/12/2007, -10/+43You mean whoppers. Anyway, it's a *King* size bill alright!
- Flashman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27@goldpress
I once got charged $110 for a pack of gum this way. But I was nine years old and paying in cash, so they fixed the mistake a bit quicker than this restaurant. - aussieNickuss, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26"but it took 5 days for the money to find its way back"
A big corporation like that with all the procedures and politics, 5 days is actually pretty quick to get that amount of money returned. - schuder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23You know when the machine says is $x.xx is correct press yes? If it says $8,648.00 don't press yes. I used to cashier and no one reads the terminals. I don't see why the negative tone of the article against BK? She is as much at fault as the cashier and the company returned the money.
- sipsyrup, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Maybe the cashier needs a special dialing wand.
- aliveonarival, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19this story would be so much cooler if it was about some one who ordered $8600 worth of burger king
- WUThad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Meh, I've done this before when I worked at a food place. I charged the customer something like $4,244.24 for a smoothie that was $4.24. After I rang it up, I caught the mistake after the receipt printed and just did a void or refund, whatever it is. He wasn't upset or anything and it was pretty easy to fix. I'm sure this is a pretty common mistake in the food business, what's not common is neither you nor the customer realizing the error.
- goldpress, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19@ FKR3
I didn't think Consumerist was that harsh of Burger King on this one. Mainly just down on them for not getting the money back as quickly as they take it from accounts.
@ Sphonix
If I had to guess, having experience dealing with many of these types of machines, I'd guess the employee typed in 864 which would be the same as 8.64 and didn't press send. They probably stepped away while expecting it to print, then came back and tried it a second time without clearing - in the process hitting a 5 instead of a six this time, so the key in would be 8 - 6 - 4 - 8 - 5 - 4. A lot of the comments on consumerist suggested people had discovered miskeying of numbers at many restaurants - not just BK. It appears to be an outdated system that doesn't crosscheck customer expense vs. employee fat-fingering the buttons.
One of the comments below by wuthad talks of a similar mistake, but it should be easily fixed if caught soon after, otherwise it gets to be a slight pain. - Jebral, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21This happened to me at a local restaurant. I went in for breakfast with my friend Amber and ended up spending 1400 dollars for some eggs. Cashier's fingernails were too long. Got it all worked out the next day though.
- coulsono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16The real scam is when the pump at the gas station doesn't print a receipt. The local 76 station near the interstate had that "problem" recently. I was in too much of a hurry (lazy) to go in and ask for a receipt when one wouldn't print at the pump. Turns out the independent owner overcharged me by exactly $10.00 on three occasions. I guess he figured that since he's by the interstate, people either wouldn't notice the overcharge or wouldn't bother traveling back to complain when the bank statement arrived. I wrote to the coroporate offices and filed a complaint with the local prosecutor's office. The '76 folks (ConocoPhillips) sent me a bundle of $50 gift certificates.
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19This ***** happened to me several years back. I have a credit card now, but back then, I was a poor college student, so all I had was a check card. At that point in time I didn't have a whole lot of cash in my checking account. One day I went to the local Jack in the Box drive-thru and ordered a $7.40 combo meal. Since I wasn't using the debit feature, I wasn't presented with a pin-entry device. I didn't check the receipt till I got home, and I freaked out to see a $74 charge to my check card, being that I only had about $60 in the account at that time. So I race on back to the jack in the box to show them whats up. The manager says he's sorry, gives me $74 in cash. Of course I was facing a $35 overdraft fee for that stupid move of theirs, so I told him. He said he couldn't do anything about that. So I end up paying $35 for a combo meal. ugh!
I can say that I now constantly check my drive-thru receipts as well as constantly check my transactions on my online banking sites frequently. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Pretty sure that would cause my card to be declined.
- Sairgem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13People who don't carry much, if any, money with them? I've used credit/debit for $1 before.
- OneHine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Uh...don't you usually have to sign a bill for this sort of thing?
- theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20Not only that, but most debit cards have a per day limit of around $1000.
For that matter, if the gal has problems speaking English and is barely literate, why does she have more money in her bank account that I do? - bashar129, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18You sign if you pay with credit, not debit.
It never hurts to double check though. I accidentally charged someone $53.54 instead of $3.54 on her credit card once(work in a liquor store). She caught it and we got it worked out right there. Shift happens. - freakout1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Is it just me or does this story make anyone hungry for burger king? lol
- bmobile, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11@modex: Actually, no they don't. It's typically based on a store policy but usually any purchase under $20 or $30 doesn't require a signature.
- rodon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You obviously don't know how 3rd party credit/debit systems work.. not all of them are connected to the register, so they have to enter the charge amount manually.
- Regulator980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I once charged a girl over $44,000 on her receipt. I quickly apologized and joked about the receipt and just voided the transaction. We had a good laugh about it and she just went on her merry way.
The End. - RooDoG, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What isn't shocking about this story is the amount she was charged... As a former Fast Food employee, I can safely say we have had a single order for just over $10,000 that was divided amongst 3 stores. There is a State Corrections Facility that annually (once per year) pays for one days meals for the inmates from our Fast Food chain. Its Ridiculous.
- tunafizzle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7oh and to all the people wondering how the cashier hit keys no where near each other it was keyed in twice 8648.64
http://www.click2houston.com/foodnews/13276794/detail.html
read other local versions of the story, the consumerist is pretty sloppy about things. - HabboX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9This article is *****. All debit cards have daily spending limits. Although the limit amounts vary, I've never seen one that allows more than $8000 to be deducted in one day.
- PixelVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6It must feel pretty bad to have a *****, pointless (vending machines will do it one day), simple job and then to still ***** it up.
- soupyc, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13***** yeah.
- vbellian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I've spent more than that in a day, they call you to find out if it's fraudulent or not.
- KaneElson, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Hence why you request to not have overdraft ability on your accounts.
I don't understand the US banking system it is so archaic in comparison to what I am used to .... - jer2eydevil88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5They would have gotten a call, I withdrew an advance of $100 once off of my credit card and they called me. $8,000? at Burger King? Some flags would have gone up.
If not then this person has more than this bill to worry about, like what their creditor might let happen next time. - insovietrussia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4This should make you feel better:
http://www.orsm.net/php/showme.php?file=/images/big_bill_for_a_good_night.jpg
Edit: Kinda NSFW, sorry. - stevensayshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It is half her fault for not looking when pressing confirm.
- MadMaxx426, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Not all systems have confirmation. If you go through the drive-thru, they let you enter a PIN but not confirm.
Wow...just re-reading that...it's amazing how lazy we've become. - bmobile, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@rodon: Typically if your bank isn't a bastard, you can request to have the overdraft fee taken off if you prove to them that it was the restaurant's fault.
- thecmgeek, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7@theblackgecko:
Who said anything about her being "barely literate?" Just because she doesn't speak your language? - mikeman8905, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Something similar happened to me at Taco Bell. Long story short I spent $46.70 on a chicken quesadilla. I got money back.
- razrielle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@kaneelson
Its just so that they get more money from you, banks think of themselves and not the customer - bickdigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Another slice-of-life: a quite similar case happened to me too when I was a student: I bought 600FF (almost 100€) Armani sunglasses at a small shop near Montparnasse, Paris and was charged 600€.
I didn't realize until my bank called me warning bankrupt. It took almost a week to get my money back since the shopkeeper was reluctant to refund at the beginning. - Lennalf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@purpledrink (#6633114)
"debit it back into my acc"
actually, technically he debited it out of their account, or credited it to your account.
That's straight from tha H-Dog. AP Crew 4 Lyfe! Word dat. - hmac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is why I always ask for a reciept.
- KaneElson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3She probably was a supervisor. All it takes to make "manager" in those places is to stay working there for a few months, they go through people so fast that they can't afford to wait long before promotion.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4You're absolutely right about this. I wonder whether it is within Burger King's legal right to refuse a refund sine this price was agreed to at the point of sale.
- LonesomeFighter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Since you only need to sign the receipt when it $20+ at fast food places, that should of been a big hint that it was more than $8.64.
- gmtwilight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Happens all the time, only reason its news is because the person charged called every news outlet she could(at least the ones Se Habla Espanole) find and tell them the sob story. I'm sure its not like the Burger King people sat there and said "Tough, thats how it went in and thats that."
Gotta love people who need the damn media attention. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The next day she drove to your store's regional office, burned it to the ground, had a good laugh, and was on her merry way once more.
- bmeckel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3yeah, cause you must have been REALLY stressed out working at that amusment park
