- inactive, on 08/03/2009, -2/+101This article clearly demonstrates a lack of understanding regarding the meaning of the word "prestige" among surveyed Americans.
- tacotacotaco, on 08/03/2009, -7/+67FTA Prestigious list: Firefighter, Scientist, Teacher, Doctor, Military officer, Nurse, Police officer, Minister/Priest/Clergy, Farmer, Engineer
This list is a pile of *****. A prestigious job is one where people go "Wow, he's a [prestigious job]!", "It'd really be impressive if my son or daughter grew up to be a [prestigious job]", or that status climbing Long Islander says "I'd really like to marry a [prestigious job]." Of that list, "Doctor" clearly qualifies, "Scientist" might qualify, "Military Officer" if a General qualifies. The rest of that list are clearly not prestigious. In fact they're jobs that one might call "typical" or "ordinary".
Firefighter and Police Officer? Good job, somewhat noble. Impressive to anybody besides boys six or under? Not really.
Teacher? Nope. Ask teachers if they really get much respect. Maybe 40 years ago it was different. "Professor" is a different story.
Nurse? Complete lack of respect for what they actually do, the dedication they show, and the hours they put in. Doctors get all the prestige unfortunately.
Minister/Priest/Clergy? In some small communities this may have some prestige. In the cities, "Bishop" or greater? yes. Otherwise, nope.
Famer? WTF?!?! Not prestigious at all. An honest, noble job that actually produces something but nobody looks up to farmers other than politicians pretending to do so.
Engineer? Most people don't know what they do. Drive trains?
Look at what corporate and charity boards have as board members if you want to see what society considers prestigious. Athletes, CEOs, bankers, entertainers - almost the list of what people say they don't consider prestigious.
Judging from these lists, there's a HUGE chasm between what people say they admire and what they really admire. - Khelben83088, on 08/03/2009, -3/+50So generally an inverse relationship between Prestige and Money?
I'm thinking jealously is playing a factor here. - ieatpoptarts, on 08/03/2009, -3/+43Least Prestigious: The Fluffer
- indyGuy, on 08/03/2009, -1/+25Interesting... some of the jobs listed as least prestigious are the same that get so much hero worship in our society - entertainers, pro athletes, and even executives (Steve Jobs, anyone?).
- MikaStar, on 08/03/2009, -5/+28Yay for teachers! Prestige and respect and admiration in a community is a big plus being a teacher. Also being someone that other people completely trust with their children for 8 hours a day is a great feeling.
- austroLogi, on 08/03/2009, -3/+25CEO's and athletes(of which I am neither) are much more prestigious jobs then half of that *****. Seriously this article just screams class envy and its quite distasteful.
- gleongelpi, on 08/03/2009, -2/+23It is obvious that this list is made up. It has nothing to do with the reality of how people really view others according to their profession.
- inactive, on 08/03/2009, -1/+21I guess politician and lawyer got left off the list because of a divide by zero error.
- capyoda, on 08/03/2009, -1/+19looks like its in there now. median income: $43,580 to $48,690.
- amnesiac87, on 08/03/2009, -0/+16That entire 4th paragraph was missing when I read it. Even after I reopened the link to make sure I wasn't about to make an ass of myself by missing something. Thanks for the reply.
- jsynnott, on 08/03/2009, -1/+17You don't belong here.
- TimtheTaxMan, on 08/03/2009, -0/+16<---Accountant
Damn it. - zomgwaffles, on 08/03/2009, -1/+16Stripper/Hooker
- sciencelovesyou, on 08/03/2009, -0/+15Saying that an anesthesiologist is just responsible for administration medication is like saying that an architect is just responsible for drawing a building. There are a mind-bogglingly large array of variables when it comes to anesthesia and, quite often, you're working under a ticking clock. It's a job I could definitely never do.
- zoomaKabu, on 08/03/2009, -0/+14You didn't pass the test/physical?
- MANIACMIKE, on 08/03/2009, -0/+13jitterbug phone operators. Those poor souls
- Sideshowslob, on 08/03/2009, -1/+14"Base on U.S. Department of Agriculture data, a full-time, salaried farm manager had a median weekly earnings of $1,001 (annual median earnings of $12,0001)"
Huh? - ctenn2ls, on 08/03/2009, -0/+13I'm avoiding both ends of the spectrum by remaining unemployed...(sigh)
- tacotacotaco, on 08/03/2009, -0/+13Is there a sarcasm engineer? You know, somebody who goes around explaining sarcasm to all the other engineers?
- MattS, on 08/03/2009, -1/+14I noticed that, too. And it calls the entire article into question for me. How can so many people hold Hollywood and Athletes up as role models, but say their profession has "little to no prestige?" Methinks I call BS.
- flip2trip, on 08/03/2009, -0/+12Worst job in America? Crack whore, no wait, that job was replaced by crack whore assistant.
- brad3378, on 08/03/2009, -1/+13feeling under appreciated over there?
- inactive, on 08/03/2009, -5/+17The end of this list ***** sucks ass! What ever happened to all the hard labor jobs, the minimum wage earners, gardeners, and dish washers. Seems to me they are biased or don't give a ***** about these people.
- Elsewhere42, on 08/03/2009, -5/+17What? No Software Developers???
Unplug the machines!!!! O_o - RealmDown, on 08/03/2009, -0/+11That gives me an idea for a sitcom. Cop by day, pole dancing at night.
TJ Stripper - Snooper1989, on 08/03/2009, -2/+12We're called "Software Engineers", are we categorized under engineers? D:
... Spy sapping my sentry? D:< - Coffeedemon, on 08/03/2009, -1/+11You know someone is a troll when they badmouth people who willingly go into burning buildings to save strangers.
- XtheXlanternX, on 08/03/2009, -1/+11um.. Does it seem like this is completely backwards??? Teachers, cops, etc. on the high prestige list and Business Executive, Professional Athlete etc. low on list?
- skipvt, on 08/03/2009, -0/+9They left off bogus list makers...
- eatporktoo, on 08/03/2009, -2/+11Look under "Scientist" it says "computer scientist" which I am pretty sure is a type of software developer
- zoomaKabu, on 08/03/2009, -2/+11No, I think it's respect for the people who do really demanding and sometimes dangerous work for relatively little pay because they think it's important work and they have a passion for it.
- krystofr, on 08/03/2009, -0/+9I thought "Politician" would be on both lists
- prabjot, on 08/03/2009, -0/+9Are you a stock broker?
- 4AntiStupid, on 08/03/2009, -1/+10Not very realistic. He's too short to reach the handle.
- 4AntiStupid, on 08/03/2009, -0/+9If you plan to work at government schools, all the salaries are published. It varies by city.
- 4AntiStupid, on 08/03/2009, -1/+10A friend of mine's kid covets the job of the guy that gets to stand on the back of the garbage truck and ride around.
- shady5500, on 08/03/2009, -0/+8I think it's because most people equate journalism with celebrity gossip and political scandals, rather than serious journalism. It isn't surprising as unfortunately this is the type of journalism that most people expose themselves too.
- DeviantDragon, on 08/03/2009, -0/+8Anesthesiologists also routinely face high levels of legal risk in their line of work.
- bipolarruledout, on 08/03/2009, -0/+7It's very easy to kill someone with most anesthesiology drugs and in fact the line between comfort and death can be very thin indeed.
- toolboxnj, on 08/03/2009, -0/+7So, altruism = prestigious?
- zsz7, on 08/03/2009, -0/+7that's because most people don't know who a software developer is.
- Coffeedemon, on 08/03/2009, -0/+7Learn to write and maybe you'll get it.
- KLowD9x, on 08/03/2009, -0/+7Don't forget about mechanics. We get shat on like we are below every other life form on earth.
- WaKluk, on 08/03/2009, -1/+7How come <inser your job> isnt there? It suck sooo much!
- potamkin, on 08/03/2009, -0/+6my thoughts exactly
- whorunbartertwn, on 08/03/2009, -0/+6Much respect for firefighters, but he is right about the moustaches... they do seem to have a much larger proportion of moustaches than your average population sample, excluding the entire country of India of course.
- LuckyASN, on 08/03/2009, -0/+6Gotta give him credit for having a realistic dream job.
- bmcnally, on 08/03/2009, -0/+5I think they meant "respected", not "prestigious". That seems to be the only way this list makes a degree of sense.
- KJSatz, on 08/03/2009, -0/+5Science!
