- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+53wouldn't these be 10 times easier to counterfeit than regular currency?
- Lungkisser, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22I've never heard of a lot of things on Digg before, but I don't bury them inaccurate.
- shooby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Because we all know if you, specifically, God of the Internet, don't know about something it obviously isn't real.
Grow up. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18"In Each Other We Trust"
That strikes me as having a lot more meaning than "In God We Trust". - olik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Inaccurate: "No State shall ... coin money." (U.S. Constitution Article 1 Section 10)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9What I don't like about it is that it basically says that your productivity and intellect mean nothing. You work one hour, you get one credit...no matter what job, skill level, education or anything you have. It kills any incentive to succeed.
Just sounds like a bad idea all the way around. - TheoDork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Mo' Money Mo' Problems.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Shallow Alto, to us locals.
- dwang1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This can't be serious......

The New Orleans citizens will never cease to amaze me. - pascal21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7"Time-based currencies value everyone’s contributions equally. One hour equals one service credit. In these systems, one person volunteers to work for an hour for another person; thus, they are credited with one hour, which they can redeem for an hour of service from another volunteer."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time-based_currency
I think this is what most of it is, if not all of it. This explains why some are called "Hours", such as "Great Lakes Hours" of Detroit, Michigan - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I can guarantee you that one hour of my time is much more productive than one hour of certain other people's time. I'd never sign up for that system.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6sockpuppets... you're from Sunnyvale aren't you?
- Cloned, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Neighborly notes? I've lived in Flagstaff all my life and have never heard about these before. I bet a lot of the businesses here would give me a weird look if I tried to pay with one of those.
- getaclue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Canadian tire money ftw!
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.humboldtexchange.org/currencyBills.htm
just one example
if you google for the names of the community currencies, many have their own web pages. - shawnanigans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes you would be very surprised how much NEWS is NEW. If we just wanted to see the same news over and over it would be called OLDS.
BTW I know the caps where unnecessary but I thought they would help me make my point. - AriaStar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Is it supposed to mean everyone in Palo Alto is a yuppy driving around in their bmws and drinking tall lattes from their local exotic cafe?"
That was me when I lived in Palo Alto and had an office there. Still drive the BMW, but drink grape juice and green tea from Sobe. Uh, this isn't helping my case, is it....
Anyway, I live in Santa Clara now and work in Sunnyvale, and have never heard it referred to as Shallow Alto either, though I can definitely see this. But I have heard vague reference to "Area Bucks." However, I never saw the point in exchanging my good ol' green backs that I can spend anywhere for some currency I can't spend anywhere but Palo Alto. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not communist...it's more of a socialist idea.
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I must admit, I'm intrigued by the time dollar idea. I'll have to do some research into that.
- Kblobz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Inaccurate: "No State shall ... coin money." (U.S. Constitution Article 1 Section 10)"
You dumbass. and btw..the wikipedia article also states this...so you aren't giving us something we aleady do not know (if you actually bothered to read the article).
Yes, a state cannot create their own legal currency (other places do not have to legally accept said currency). But, if walmart wanted to create wal-bucks which can only be spent at walmart, they are allowed (the banks just aren't obligated to accept it). This is the principal behind these localized currencies. - piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2read the thread. that's been answered various times.
- gregs2500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think this list is crap. I have lived in one of the cities listed for 20 years and I have never heard any mention of this alternate currency in all my life. I guess that shows you can't trust everything you read on Wikipedia.
- beegary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh dear oh dear, what a big pile of *****.
I gotta Disney Dollar in my memory box, thought after 15 years it would be worth more than 1 dollar - ho hum. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I still have Brooklyn Greenbacks. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I wish people would still use them. Everyone had such a sense of community.. the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway was paid in Greenbacks by the people. It fizzled out in around 2001 though.. right around 9/11. *sigh*
- hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sunnyvale calls Palo Alto - Shallow Alto? I've never heard it before. But I haven't been here that long either.
Is it supposed to mean everyone in Palo Alto is a yuppy driving around in their bmws and drinking tall lattes from their local exotic cafe? Cause I wouldn't disagree. - CalipsoII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@hobbers
So you're a surgeon, or a physicist or an astronaut then? Or you some pump jockey like I suspect you might be :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When you put it like that, it sounds like communism.
- Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So how does the concepts of rarity and specialization enter in this hour scheme?
- Run4ny, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I think it's a great idea to get off the fiat currency that not only is worth ***** (it's not backed by gold or silver and its only value is what we perceive it to be), but it's contributed and still is contributing to the inflation and economic problems we've experienced and still are experiencing.
Check out "America: Freedom to Fascism" to understand why we need to abolish the Federal Reserve System and its notes (US Dollars) and go back on the Gold/Silver standard: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4312730277175242198&q=america+freedom+to+fascism - ISurfTooMuch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@CBTF
Not Communism, which is an economic system where the state controls the means of production. Communal, possibly.
But if you think about this, it isn't a bad idea, assuming you have free time now and need some later. You can work for someone now and redeem that time later by having someone do things for you. I agree that having everyone's hours count equally could undervalue the work that some people might do, but how do you set values on time? Is mowing a yard more or less valuable than detailing a car? Depends on how badly you need it done, I suppose. And besides, it's a voluntary system, so no one is forcing anyone to participate. - Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys are no where near the yuppie infestation of Concord.
- Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Notice that not many coastal places take sand dollars as currency...
Now if Cape Cod did...we could open a whole new treasury there. - cheekdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1soooo.....the place that takes the spud dollars...how many pounds of potatoes will the iphone cost?
- Persol2point0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually want to see pictures of this as well....

Tha's the only one I can find though... kind of disappointing. - Corrosionx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Isurftoomuch:
That's exactly why money was invented and why the free-market sets the value of things, because the value of something is exactly what you are willing to pay and what the other person is ready to provide it for you at any given time. It can't be set in a system, it's too fluid and dependent on individual decisions, choices and negotiations. - ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There are images of some of them on the wikipedia entry.

Is anyone else shocked that New Orleans would call their currency "Mo' Money" /sarcasm - d17182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1From one of the first links in the Wikipedia article,

Who was it that said something along the lines of "Only a fool believes everything or nothing."? - teddyrux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No Mississippi Fun-Bucks?
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first thing I thought about was Marlon Wayans faking convulsions and Damon Wayans running off with the guy's cash.
Mo' Money, Mo' Money! - jimmiem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What you don't know about, if we tried hard enough, could just about cram into the Grand Canyon if we used a really big shoe horn. I live near Ithaca and their Ithaca Hours actually brought British royalty into the area to learn more about the program.
- schwartzon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1good for one trip.....out of mississippi!
///were bad little kitties, and were sowwy - Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm, I've lived in or around Palo Alto for 25 years, and never heard of so called "Area Bucks" or seen anyone use them....

I've lived on the island of Kauai for 10 years and I have NEVER heard of using alternative currencies. I'm missing out apparently. - jimmiem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.countercurrents.org/ithacahours.htm
- schwartzon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've used and been issued "Ithaca hours" before, its a great idea..but pretty much the entire community has to get behind it for it to be effective.
As to why there called hours...well one Ithaca hour is worth one hour of work. So if you were to spend 30 Min's helping shovel compost at the greenstar co-op (in downtown Ithaca), you would be issued one Ithaca half-hour. You could then take that half-hour to the Moosewood Restaurant, and get yourself some great hummus, or even a portabella mushroom sammwich.
Its an off-the-grid thang, you plugged-in folk wouldn't understand! - Alexman2525, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have a HUGE stash of Flagstaff Neighborly Notes. I use em' at the Black Bean.
- datcrazydj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Your order will be 3 North Fork Helping Hands. Please drive to the next window.
