- BrookeMarks, on 01/24/2008, -5/+86Sweet! Let's try and blow our refunds on domestic products though; no Playstation 3s or Wiis, people! Buy only Apple Pies, Ford Trucks and Baseballs. Wait, what else do we make again?
- Slungsolow, on 01/24/2008, -1/+69Here's what we all do when we get our checks - we pay down our debts. You put it towards your mortgage. You put it towards your credit card bills. Got a car payment coming up, over pay it by the amount of the check.
We need to show the government how to properly handle a debit and credit. First and foremost you don't go handing out money when you have a 9 trillion dollar deficit.
(seriously put the damn money towards your debt. it will really ***** the economy but it will benefit you more than it benefits the corporations sucking up all your money with high interest credit cards and mortgages) - david76, on 01/24/2008, -2/+50Gotta love it. Let's spend $150 billion we don't have to stimulate the economy. And we'll be paying back that $150 billion when? Why don't we just call this what it is, a loan from foreignors to prop up an economy that was put in this situation by bankers betting on housing prices continuing to rise. They bet wrong, put the economy at risk, and now we're using MORE credit to cover the gap.
- JuanBSU, on 01/24/2008, -1/+40That's what she said.
- cfelix, on 01/24/2008, -3/+39I remember something like this. Something at the same levels of idiocy. Yes, I remember getting a $300 check a few years back and so did my wife. Then, at tax time, I had to return the full $600 (no, not a portion of it, but the whole $600) to the IRS. My guess is that this is the same deal. Honestly, how does this help if in fact we have to return this "incentive." Can anyone find some info if this is not the case? Post a link.
- ogmak, on 01/24/2008, -1/+36Screw it, im gonna get me some hookers!
- astroslut, on 01/24/2008, -6/+35How about we use are refund checks to buy back our Government
- ZandorMonkeyBoy, on 01/24/2008, -2/+31Reading comprehension. It's not just for the SATs anymore...
- cfelix, on 01/24/2008, -2/+27Well, we make lots of things in the USA. Let's see. ... ah ... well ... I'll get back to you on that!
- nicepants, on 01/24/2008, -1/+25Sounds like a short-term solution to a long-term problem. Sure, you get $600 now, but that money doesn't come from nowhere, either the Fed will have to "print" more money to cover it, or they're going to have to recoup it in the form of taxes or something similar. It's like using one of those courtesy checks that the credit card company sends you.
- DreKor, on 01/24/2008, -1/+25I'll use my $600 to buy a tree and a gun. The tree is for hugging and the gun is for anybody who tries to take my tree away from me.
- notque, on 01/24/2008, -3/+26 “Vote for me and everybody’s gonna get a check for $300″
“$300? Wait $300? Oh Boy! Wait a second. Let me get this right. You’re saying that if I give you my vote, and then for 4 years you can do whatever you want, roll back any law you want, apoint ay judicial federal judge you want, change all the laws in the land, you can do whatever you want, but I’m gonna get a check for $300? Once? Wait a second slick, turn it back. OK thats fine, I could use that $300 bucks, I surely could. I could use it, my family could use it, our whole town could use it. Well about all yer rich freinds? All yer millionaire, billionaire friends of yours? They’re not going to get any of our money right? They don’t get any money back do they?”
“Well, no, they actually get millions and millions of dollars back.”
“But I still get my $300 right? Allright you got my vote then! I’M GONNA BUY ME A HAMMOCK! WING DING DIDDLEY DING DING DOO!”
-David Cross - Shut Up You ***** Baby! - whyufail, on 01/24/2008, -0/+21Will this be coming in tricky dick fun bills? I'm going to spend mine on 100 cups of coffee.
- Lonestar86, on 01/24/2008, -3/+24Sorry BrookeMarks, unfortunately apple pies are made and frozen in Canada, Fords are made in Mexico, and baseballs are made somewhere in Central America...maybe an American Flag? Damn, no, those are made in China, aren't they? Well, we've got till June, maybe we'll find something!
- piratearggghhh, on 01/24/2008, -1/+21In bizarro world, the best way to recover economically is to give away more money when you have record debt with continued record spending.
- WWWoody, on 01/24/2008, -2/+22I'm so going to sit on this instead of blowing it.
- DreKor, on 01/24/2008, -0/+18I think we manufacture Toyotas here, you could get one of those.
- whyufail, on 01/24/2008, -10/+28Wow, I dugg up before reading past the first sentence, and now I deeply regret giving that raving moron attention.
- LENNY2112, on 01/24/2008, -0/+17BEER!!!!!
I didn't say good beer. - d3dm, on 01/24/2008, -1/+17This is designed to buy votes in an election year, under the guise that it will help the economy. Good luck, America.
- Wiggles2, on 01/24/2008, -1/+15Our primary export is U.S. dollars
- xtmno3, on 01/24/2008, -0/+14Smartest move: Take the refund and invest it in a CD or something else fail-safe. When they want it back, just send it back to them and keep the interest.
- ivanmarsh, on 01/24/2008, -2/+15Just becasue they call it a refund doesn't mean it is.
Remember you're going to get taxed on it next year... so technically you're being taxed twice on the same money.
Thanks G.W. - megadan76, on 01/24/2008, -2/+15I don't understand how people can think this is a good idea.
- RedAmerican, on 01/24/2008, -1/+14What a ridiculously stupid idea! The recession has already started and I would bet that anyone who is smart would try to save the money instead of spend it.
- LENNY2112, on 01/24/2008, -1/+13...But this would be the responsible thing to do, Daddy Gov wants me to blow it on Wally World goods.
I agree with you, this is a rebate of YOUR money people, be responsible and know your adding to your income also and you'll pay taxes on it later on. Invest it or pay down debt! - wildmick83, on 01/24/2008, -2/+14And just like that I became a welfare recipient... Sonofabitch!!!
- ZandorMonkeyBoy, on 01/24/2008, -7/+19The problem is that people that don't pay any taxes ARE getting paid under this plan.
- Awspire, on 01/24/2008, -1/+12What a monumental waste of time and resources. The cost alone to distribute these funds is a waste. Heres an idea, how about Washington to start spending responsibly in order to bolster consumer confidence, rather than pay people off to go shopping. Considering the morons in office, I'm betting people will bank these check rather than spend.
- newznozzl, on 01/24/2008, -5/+16Yeah, nice, huh? People who pay the most taxes every year (the 75k+ ones that don't make enough to really get the ultra-rich loop holes) won't be getting anything, but the ones that pay no taxes AT ALL will be getting a check. Always nice to see a fair system.
And why in the world are we doing it this way? Why not just do a big middle class tax cut? (Again, CUT taxes, don't give money to people who don't pay taxes). Or offer job training to those that don't pay taxes (e.g., because they aren't making enough money), to try to help them actually be able to earn more over the years (and pay more taxes).
UGH!!!!!! - ayeroxor, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11"Well, we make lots of things in the USA. Let's see. ... ah ... well ... I'll get back to you on that!"
You all are already missing the point. WE are the government. WE are lending ourselves money that we will borrow from somewhere else to give to ourselves. Then we will have to tax ourselves later at a higher rate to pay it back.
There is no such thing as a "check from the government" - it will only put us deeper in debt that we will pay back through taxes later. - DickyT83, on 01/24/2008, -3/+14This is like when you were younger, and there was the kid no one liked, but he gave you stuff he had so that you liked him. Bush is like that kid.
- krnldmp, on 01/24/2008, -2/+13I wish it were funny. The corporatists try a little communism to save the program.
- inactive, on 01/24/2008, -4/+15$600 is crap, this wont be enough to stimulate the economy. Leave Iraq, vets have kids, stimulus!
- MrKrinkleDude, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11You don't have to cash the check. I'm just going to stick it into my Money Market account, not gonna spend a penny.
- simplicityiskey, on 01/24/2008, -0/+11That's how we solve problems in America nowadays. People buy an overpriced house at an adjustable rate then put the monthly payments on their credit cards. You sound about as impressed with this plan as I am.
- bimtott, on 01/24/2008, -7/+17I'm going to blow my Recession Bucks in Mexico. Who's with me??
- ScottMitchell, on 01/24/2008, -3/+13We have not yet exported the US war machine. Maybe you can buy a bomb, or something.
- puter, on 01/24/2008, -0/+10Isn't this tantamount to printing money? what about inflation concerns?
- ozymandias2012, on 01/24/2008, -8/+18It's a start....now just get rid of the damn income tax so I can spend the rest of MY MONEY!
- simplicityiskey, on 01/24/2008, -2/+12If as an individual you make more than $75,000 you won't be getting anything. If you and your spouse make over $150,000 together, you won't be getting anything. And truthfully, none of us are really getting anything anyways...
- tandrews, on 01/24/2008, -1/+11Sell-out politicians to the voters: "Please take this bribe and vote for us in Nov so we can continue to pimp ourselves to corporate America while selling your family down the river!"
- grat2001, on 01/24/2008, -0/+9I use to make burgers when I was younger, but I guess American don't have that job anymore either.
- Slungsolow, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10read the article:
People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple. - PhilMoskowitz, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11Cheques. Brilliant. In lieu of proper social infrastructure that exists in all other western nations, here.
- BadseedJR, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10Seriously, this is perfect. When the chief accountant for the entire country goes on TV and says we owe social security way WAY more than we could ever afford to pay, I don't think we should be giving out 600 dollars to everyone. Maybe take all that money, give it to someone OUTSIDE the government to invest, collect interest on it, then use that to pay our debts as a country. I'd much rather see that then a 600 dollar check
- JDoorjam, on 01/24/2008, -1/+10Most likely, Mexicans.
- aaronwolfe, on 01/24/2008, -2/+11China
