- pedo, on 07/16/2009, -4/+180what about all the money they would save on law enforcement, courts, prisons, etc.?
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -9/+1751.4 billion seems like a low estimate.
- Winkleman, on 07/16/2009, -14/+167Yea, but how much of that money would the state spend on dorito's?
- jimbo92107, on 07/16/2009, -7/+152Legalizing pot would also make California the #1 tourist destination in the whole world!
- dannybht, on 07/16/2009, -7/+150Tobacco is taxed and it's significantly more dangerous to your health than weed.
- CodeAnxiety, on 07/16/2009, -6/+77We have a right to do what we want to our own bodies, as long as we aren't breaking someone else's rights in the process...
If we want to smoke pot then that is our RIGHT... regardless of the fact the government can weasel some money out of us in the process. - sjbdallas, on 07/16/2009, -10/+77I'm so torn. I mean, I hate taxes so much.........almost as much as I love weed.

- tofagerl, on 07/16/2009, -1/+55People would magically become lazy from the introduction of a law allowing what they're already doing illegally? California is weird...
- WhammX, on 07/16/2009, -3/+55I live in Los Angeles county and on an almost daily basis can sell the sweet herb around my neighborhood or my drive.
When I used to smoke on a daily basis I remember meeting new people daily, through friends that would toke up.
Simply stated, it's amazing how many people smoke weed.
I've passed at least 4 smoke shops earlier today, just seems like its gonna happen. I remember hearing somewhere that even if its taxed like hell, it'll still be much less expensive than having to drive all the way out to meet my dealer and pick up a small bit of herb.
I've experience L.A. completely baked, driving to Little Tokyo (eating Shabu Shabu) to riding the rides at Universal Studios baked.
*It's gonna happen.*
Hell, maybe even this year...in the crisis Cali is in and all the talk about the subject, & or course the CBS polling showing people have eased up on the matter.
Tip: Pinks Hot Dogs+Being Baked= Insert Image of god cooking a hot dog here - weber805, on 07/16/2009, -5/+55just legalize it already
- frelk, on 07/16/2009, -1/+461.4 TRILLION dollars!!
- eMximeR, on 07/16/2009, -1/+41As a Utahn (no mormon), I'd make a drive out to CA
- QreepyBORIS, on 07/16/2009, -0/+33Dugg for "no mormon".
- noangelcame, on 07/16/2009, -1/+34Weed does not make you lazy. You just know lazy people who happen to smoke weed.
- OrangeTide, on 07/16/2009, -1/+31I hate taxes, but I love donuts. Donuts have always won for me.
- Gravedigger3, on 07/16/2009, -1/+29I would gladly pay a tax if it meant weed getting legalized.
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -4/+32and California would still be 20+ billion in the red
- Dream0Weaver, on 07/16/2009, -6/+34Does anyone think it's weird that California can over-tax so... so greatly, but yet get in a budget deficit?
- oldhick, on 07/16/2009, -2/+29That brought a smile to my face. Thank you.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -2/+29COOL STORY
- oldhick, on 07/16/2009, -1/+28I've known some lazy pot heads in my life, but none that lazy. Smokers will work. They'll work so they can smoke.
- paradigmxx, on 07/16/2009, -2/+26This figure is absurdly conservative, as it fails to factor in the surge of multi billlions followed in food indulgence.
- oldhick, on 07/16/2009, -4/+28Very, very, very not true. It is extremely easy to cure tobacco. Who the heck have you been talking to? Everyone around here grows and smokes their own tobacco.
- djskyler, on 07/16/2009, -1/+24sorry for making you feel uncool
- govtdoesnotwork, on 07/16/2009, -0/+21Doritos are also taxed, heavily. Win win.
- ashes0, on 07/16/2009, -0/+20Good for you. Your life will be a hell of a lot cheaper now.
- Yimyack, on 07/16/2009, -0/+19What crime is that?
- noangelcame, on 07/16/2009, -0/+19Right now,. an ounce of good marijuana goes for $300 to $400. Do you think it's normal for a plant, which can grow almost anywhere, to be nearly worth it's weight in gold?
When weed is legalized,. an ounce of it should go for under $20 easy. Even if they taxed it $50 on top of that,. it would still be a huge deal compared to what we are paying for it now. And I won't have to visit a shady dealer with dirty hands,. when I could just get some at the local 7-Eleven,. or Walgreens. - Gravedigger3, on 07/16/2009, -1/+19I agree considering California would become the equivalent of the Netherlands in Europe as stoners from all across the US and even other countries would flock to the state to take advantage of the new law.
Tourism, an already booming industry for us Californian's, would get one hell of a boost which = good news for everyone. - noangelcame, on 07/16/2009, -8/+26Can we stick to calling it WEED, please? Pot sounds like what your parents call it.
- floodo1, on 07/16/2009, -3/+20While I applaud the movement for using economics as an engine to drive legalization I fail to understand why it deserves some special tax beyond sale tax. It doesn't have nearly the health care related costs that tobacco does to drive the tax. It's really just an oppurtunisitc tax scheme.
That said I'll welcome the 9-10 dollars of total tax on a typcial eigth (if cost drops down to $30 or stays at the typical $50), if it means I can be free of worry from the cops, and not have to resort to abusing the medical marijuana system. And more importantly if it means that so many people won't have to goto jail for one of the most ***** crimes ever. I wish we could retroactively prosecute people like Anslinger for being knowing liars and racists. - frelk, on 07/16/2009, -2/+19What about all the people in prison who would save a lot of being-deprived-of-their-freedom time?
- bman1984, on 07/16/2009, -0/+16Cannabis production is cheap. Prices are inflated due to the high risk of production. Take away that risk, and the price will fall.
- Spire3660, on 07/16/2009, -1/+17There is going to be a town on the California/Nevada border that will be off the HOOK! Build it right on the border. Gambling and hookers in the front, pot in the rear.
- zinc6471, on 07/16/2009, -1/+17still if given an option to buying a pack of cigiweed vs having to maintain and grow your own, most ppl would just buy for the simplicity.
- centran, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16I wonder how companies will react to a change in the law. If marijuana becomes legal will we see many companies still insisting on drug testing and not hiring or firing due to THC?
- inactive, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16If you wonder what the impact would be, all I can say is this: Let's find out.
- jman583, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16Well it's REAL name is cannabis.
- TritonX, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16Unemployment would go up. But not for that reason. It would go up because of all the prison guard, jail staff and lawyers you won't need anymore.
- kourck, on 07/16/2009, -1/+16We can put them in our handy imaginary black hole where it doesn't cost money to round up people entrenched into society and nothing has repercussions.
- oldhick, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15No. It's California. That's how they 'roll'. ;)
- johnomaz, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15Somehow I doubt news is the only thing you are a junky with.
- Shazbuckle, on 07/16/2009, -2/+16Hell, I'm in Ireland. I'd ***** move to California.
- enantiodromia, on 07/16/2009, -1/+15i guess you think a Xanax nation is much healither, eh?
- noangelcame, on 07/16/2009, -0/+13The reason why they can get away with over taxing weed is because at the moment,. people are paying $300 to $400 for weed on the street. When weed is made legal,. the price for an ounce of weed should drop below $20 no problem. So,. taxing it $50,. it would still be a huge deal compared to now.
I know a lot of us who are smoking now,. wouldn't mind a damn bit,. we'd be too busy smoking and counting all the money we've saved since it becoming legal. Additionally,. we'd be proud,... for a while,. to be doing our part to help the state economy,. and to help prove the act of legalization a success. - Barackalypse, on 07/16/2009, -2/+14I suspect they'd still be in second place behind a place with legalized pot, prostitution, and gambling.
- yocouchdigga, on 07/16/2009, -1/+13read in the voice of Jim Breuer.
- Gravedigger3, on 07/16/2009, -1/+13Correlation does not equal causation. Maybe lazy people are just attracted to weed.
