- HeyyyJoe, on 11/10/2009, -0/+23wow, time really wants legal weed! its good to see some reliable media outlets strongly support legalization...just a waiting game..
- agreenerplace, on 11/10/2009, -2/+19Amount of money each state could make taxing marijuana:
http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/taxes_marij ... - bunghole59, on 11/11/2009, -0/+14it's legal to make your own beer and wine and maybe that is popular where you live
- bobburn1, on 11/11/2009, -1/+14Yes, because alcoholism sure has stopped Alaska from having a gainfully employed populace...wtf are you talking about?
- theaverageidiot, on 11/11/2009, -0/+12@toothbrush12345
1) "Pot addicts"? There's no such thing. Marijuana isn't addictive - certainly not more addictive than sugar, anyways, and far FAR FAR less addictive than tobacco or even alcohol, if it is at all.
2) Medical marijuana is legit. It could have saved my girlfriend's father her life - he died because he couldn't eat anything due to cancer. Her father died when she was only 16.
3) So what if it's a ruse, anyways? It's not harmful, it would bring in billions in revenue, would save jail space, and would give the police more time to worry about real crimes like rape and murder. And it's not harmful. And the government shouldn't be able to tell you that you cannot use it even if it WAS harmful.
So ***** OFF, and go watch a documentary like "The Union" or read a medical journal or a book or ANYTHING and get some real facts. - Tddupre, on 11/11/2009, -0/+12This doesn't factor in the savings from using less resources to go after pot users or the money that would be made from industrial hemp
- bunghole59, on 11/10/2009, -0/+11share this video with your friends and elected officials where you live.
- lennynumberone, on 11/11/2009, -0/+11You mean it hasn't been proven to shrink tumors, increase appetite, and make you the fastest ***** swimmer in the world? Damn, you stupid.
- beelz, on 11/10/2009, -0/+8http://www.taxcannabis2010.org/
- S7aind, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7Expected a Bel-Air or something
- SakisRakis, on 11/11/2009, -0/+7NO WAY REALLY?!
- Propethic, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6So what's stopping your neighbor/imaginary friend from smoking pot?
- bobburn1, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6Seriously, what are you smoking?
- yocouchdigga, on 11/11/2009, -0/+6should have been pro-pot.
- gvoakes, on 11/10/2009, -4/+9Haha yeah that story owns, glad you liked it, because it's completely made up
- gandhi7, on 11/11/2009, -0/+5Was I the only one who felt that the narrator for this video sounded like he was making a video for his high-school computer class? I was kinda surprised this was on TIME
- Propethic, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=4522
You also realize that there are more than 2x the amount of people in the city I live in then the entire state of Alaska right? - laxmidd50, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4The same could be said about tobacco
- PlasticHotDog, on 11/11/2009, -0/+4How many people do you know who grow their own tobacco?
- poprocksandsoda, on 11/10/2009, -0/+4I can't wait until weed is legal and the ATF, FDA and IRS are all involved with it. The pro-pot champions are getting exactly what they want.
- obeythefist, on 11/11/2009, -0/+3My idea of winning the war on the war on drugs is a point where possession, growing, smoking, and sharing non-addictive, non-deadly, natural, mind altering plants is something that the government ignores.
My nightmare of the eventual outcome of the current "tax and regulate" line of thinking is that Phillip Morris gets involved and it becomes a lobbyist's dream and a marketer's a cash cow. - bunghole59, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2http://digg.com/politics/Republican_Mom_Speaks_Out ...
- Benjerama, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3Is it just me, or does the voice over guy sound like he just took a huge hit?
- TheFurnace, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2or the resulting wave of increased junk food consumption
- obeythefist, on 11/11/2009, -1/+3It will be a glorious day when all you pro-tax potheads are just *furious* that pot is unfairly taxed so highly and that government involvement in our lives extends to the things we do in the privacy of our own homes.
- malex, on 11/11/2009, -0/+2That would be pretty glorious... because it would mean that the last 90 years of draconian prohibition laws would be a forgotten memory.
- TheFurnace, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1you have to be realistic though, if you had the option of taxing food and clothing as apposed to big screen tv's and snowmobiles, you'd choose the latter because they are not necessary.
weed is a recreational drug for most, and can be religious for others, but taxing it wouldn't be wrong at all. In fact, I'd support a very high end tax, not only because the government could use more money, but it would curb people's frequent use of it. No matter who you are, it is still a drug and shouldn't be used outside moderation.
if you're looking for a taxless society, there's not a single industrialized nation that doesn't have a tax. It is just the way it has to be. - and303, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1...and you just accept it with open arms, eh?
- beakerbite, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1I don't see it as wrong, you're being taxed based on what you purchase and utilize. Its not a punishment. Taxing income is a more severe punishment as you have no say in how much your being taxed. With sales tax, you are taxed according to what you want to spend. Thus, the more lavish a lifestyle you live, the more you pay into the federal coffers. And you are taxed for everything you purchase. When you go and purchase eggs and get taxed do you see it as your doing something wrong?
Sales tax is a good thing man. - celust, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1http://www.californiacannabisinitiative.org/ ftw
- lukedamonkey, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1If it's cheap enough, no one will want to grow/sell due to the low profit margins, I think most of them will go legal if they're doing it for the love of the herb.
- beakerbite, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1Why are you so offended by what people to in their own time, in their own home, with their own bodies? People get tattoos, drink beer, get fat, have sex with as many adult sexual partners or whatever sex they desire as they want, and put ***** in as many parts of the body as can be imagined (piercings). And no one, doing any of those things has ever affected my life and made it less meaning full. So, to put it simply, when someone decides to live their life and their way, they do not harm anyone.
And if you so desire to throw out the argument that they are hurting their families, well all I have to say to you is so what. I hurt my in-laws when I told them I was atheist. I hurt my mothers feelings when she caught me with a girl in my room. My point here is, anything can hurt someone's feelings, if they let it.
My dad was/is a an alcoholic and a prescription drug abuser. He was so ***** up half the time that he would flip out and yell and scream for no reason, and then other times he would be barely responsive. He eventually was caught in a 6 month affair with another woman and my dad ran away across the country with her. Then I found out this was his 7th affair. And of course the divorce was about as ugly as can be, there where even suicide threats.
I had plenty of reason to hate him and I decided not to. I talk to him all the time (and this happened only two years ago btw) and I still care about him. So moral of the story: If its not your life, GET OVER IT! - malex, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1You think corporate involvement and marketing is the worst case scenario? That some taxes and regulation are worse than having your home searched and being sent to prison?
What exactly does "a lobbyist's dream" entail, anyway... ridiculous subsides for hemp bio-fuel? And wouldn't a company like Phillip Morris prefer to sell cannabis _without_ the unfair taxes you're complaining about?
I believe what you're experiencing here is "perfection being the enemy of the good." You may want to adjust your priorities before you get out of college. - celust, on 11/11/2009, -0/+1probably sold it to TIME after turning it in on time :D
- gasherthegrey, on 11/11/2009, -0/+0*Starts the slowly building clap*
I almost dugg you up for that piece of well-written nonsense.
Almost. - vapn420, on 11/11/2009, -0/+0Wake up, we get taxed for EVERYTHING
- and303, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1I don't think using taxing as a scapegoat for legalization is the answer, or good enough. Taxing, while not as severe as incarceration, is just another way of punishing people for doing what they want.
It isn't a step in the right direction because you're still promoting the idea that medical marijuana users are doing something wrong and deserve to be debited more than someone who is not. - celust, on 11/11/2009, -1/+1http://www.californiacannabisinitiative.org/ ftw
Just read the bills. Way more comprehensive / less government screw-ups than Oaklands 2010 bill. Read it for yourself. - allisonV12, on 11/11/2009, -1/+0Just medicate them already.
Put the weed in with the disability check and forget about it. - sbluetruck, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1Sounds like his balls just dropped
- and303, on 11/11/2009, -2/+1Taxing someone for doing what they want with their own body is still wrong.
You can argue that it is in "the right direction". But it isn't, it is just encouraging punishing people for doing what they want with their time and money. - zvoidx, on 11/11/2009, -4/+1Don't get me wrong, the video presents a very sane situation...
Let's say pot became legal everywhere for anyone over 21; what would happen to unlicensed marijuana dealers? Everyone would be trying to grow and sell it. What would be the penalty?
Wouldn't the hunting down of a significant percentage of the population, fining and/or prosecuting be similar to the War On Drugs and tie up resources?
As far as taxing legal marijuana; wouldn't a large number of smokers just grow their own for far less, rather than purchase a branded pack at a convenience store? - gvoakes, on 11/10/2009, -23/+17I came home this afternoon after work and I smelled something funny from my neighbors house. I went over there and the door was unlocked so I went right in. Sure enough there was my neighbor and two of his friends smoking to their hearts content. I told them they had two options, one- they could put the joints out or two- I would put the joints out for them. My neighbor had run ins with me before so he knew I meant business so he threw his joint down and told me to leave. I said you made a wise choice but I'm still calling the cops and then I turned to leave. My neighbor then got up off the couch got behind me and said a few cuss words and told me to mind my business. Well that did it. I turned around, took off my shades, looked him straight in the eye and said "lets get high". I then front kicked him a good 8 feet in the air. Then his other friend came at me with the bong, I grabbed his arm, snapped it and then hit him in the stomach with the bong. His other friend ran into the kitchen so I went after him. He was in the corner crying so I said "this is your brain" and then I grabbed a frying pan and said "this is your brain on drugs" and then I hit him in the head as hard as I could with the frying pan. After that I called the cops and they came over and arrested my neighbor and his friends. As I was leaving the sarge shouted out to me thanks. I turned around, took off my shades, looked him straight in the eye and said " well you know sarge, perhaps if we build a freaking dunkin doughnuts on this street it would give you guys a excuse to ride up here once or twice a week and keep the crime down. I then threw my shades on the ground to let him know I meant business. I feel pretty good about what I did for my neighborhood today.
- toothbrush12345, on 11/11/2009, -10/+1LOL, medical marijuana is really a ruse by pot addicts to make it legal
- digggroupie, on 11/10/2009, -17/+3My apartment smells like cigarette smoke when i open a window. I can't wait till i can have this awful smell accompany that. I think punching a hippy in a wheelchair may be more satisfying.
Criminalize Health Care Avoidance - akchrs, on 11/11/2009, -18/+1Alaska: 2.8 million. That's what it cost to pave a 20 foot road. Stupid excuse to make everyone drugged out jobless zombies. What a fail.
