- jshare, on 12/02/2008, -0/+3The nicest thing about VAT is that when you buy something in a store, the price advertised is the price you pay i.e. there are no 'surprises' at checkout. But there's no correlation between VAT and income tax. France and Israel have both, for example.
- MMarquit, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2While it would be nice to get rid of income tax and just go with VAT, I don't know how feasible that is. We just spend waaaaay too much and expect too much from our government to get rid of the income tax. But maybe if we had VAT as well, we could reduce the income tax.
- neubert, on 12/02/2008, -0/+2The U.S. should have a VAT and get rid of the Income tax. Tax spending not work.
- MMarquit, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1You make a good point. Many people forget that we in America pay a great deal less in taxes than they do in much of the developed world.
- wisequeen, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Most of us in the world have vat(sales tax) and income tax they are two separate taxes and have been there as long as I can remember. Vat or value added tax is included in the price of the product or service you buy. Companies like myself who have a vat number, are required to pay this tax over to the Govt. Vat is payable on any service, phone bill, electricity bill, doctors bill. Please be aware that most of us in Europe pay between 32 to 45% of our net income in income tax too. Count yourselves lucky.
- MikiSaxon, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Politicains may come and go, but the lobbyists are forever and you'll never get a VAT past them. Of course, for a short-term fix, we can save the $12 Billion a month we're spending on the Iraq war. That's a start!
