- KaiserAce, on 08/28/2008, -7/+65This story is bull.
As a not so proud employee of Target (and trust me, I love shopping there, just hate working there), I know that cashiers CANNOT tell you why coupons or discounts are rejected. This discounts are usually tied to your credit card account which is private information. Nobody at Target is ALLOWED to know that information. Just because one stupid woman decides to complain to the Consumerist about her coupon being rejected, doesn't mean they're 'The Big Man Trying to Bring the Little Man Down'. - fani, on 08/28/2008, -6/+32Its getting fashionable to make a big deal out of every little thing, jumping to conclusion based on littlest of facts and start bashing everyone ( taking out frustration ? ).
This is not news. She should be ashamed for posting this and consumerist equally ashamed of posting little things like this.
I regularly shop at Target and had no such issue. My 10% discount was properly applied. So, one Target didn't give her her 10% and they didn't have access or knowhow to figure out who used her coupon. Is that really digg-worthy ?
I'm sorry but people are getting annoying acting like kids and behaving petulantly at every chance. "Hey, shock and awe at what Target did to me. Hear my story."
Just like those stupid newscasters - "You'll never believe what they put in your coffee these days.. Coming up at 11".
Idiotic story. - KirbyMeister, on 08/28/2008, -0/+23Or you could, you know, pay the bill in full and not get hit with interest.
- Sererena, on 08/28/2008, -3/+23"My 10% coupon doesn't work!? Just you wait till the internet hears about this!"
- KirbyMeister, on 08/28/2008, -8/+24The cashier made up a story and said "it was probably used". Which makes perfect sense, people who work at Target have a predisposition to make stuff up to try to satiate a customer so they can get them out of their hair before their register marks that transaction as taking too long.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+13It's still money you don't have to pay if it offsets sales tax.
- DrNovacaine, on 08/28/2008, -1/+12Working for Target as a lowly cashier, this sounds like the 'guest' was trying to use the 10% discount without the using the Target Visa. It's printed on the back of the coupon, but I've been yelled at by the wonderful 'guests' for the same thing. The cashier probably did not know about that, or may have been new, or from the floor if it was busy and not used to working up front. The GSTL could have taken the suggestion that the card had been used from the cashier, and just passed it off.
But that is all I can surmise from the story.
The Red Card is lame, I know, I try and pass off and try not to get in the 'guest's' face about it, or be a bother. Get the Check card if you shop at target a lot, you don't get the initial 10% but you do when you get 1000 points/dollars if I remember from the terms and services, its alright. I need to read it again.
Really, I am sorry for asking, if any of you all come to my line. - Alex2, on 08/28/2008, -3/+13So.. you can't just walk out on the cashier without completing their sale?
They don't want to give you your discount.. don't give them any money.
And let them put the crap back on the shelves.
Don't put up with crap from retailers.. walk out on them. - KirbyMeister, on 08/28/2008, -0/+9Heh.... The worst thing is that the employee discount is also 10%, and that just absorbs the sales tax. Still, there were plenty of people that came in with 10% visa coupons, either from the initial signup or the rewards program.
However, it is possible (or at least was a year ago) to use the Visa and Employee discounts at the same time, resulting in a much better 19% discount (since they are applied separately) on a 42" HDTV. Although about half a year later when I got another 10% coupon they wouldn't let me use it with employee discount on an iPod Nano, the cashier ignorantly claiming that it wasn't possible. Management never appeared to notice or care...
...Just like everyone else who worked there. - rukeypoo, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8I just love it when you know it's gonna be a consumerist.com story. It expedites the burying process tenfold.
- Alex2, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8Aint the customer's fault.
Why should the customer have to deal with i? - thehuntedpossum, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6As a Target manager, I got to say I'm sorry you don't have a good experience working there. You should come work at my store!
- kinseyincanada, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7making a big deal out of every little thing is what the Consumerist was founded on
- Twee, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6I'm a cashier at Target as well and feel the same way. If they actually were using the Target Visa, I'd just ask the GSTL for permission to give them 10% off under the discounts screen to avoid causing a scene.
- SirBruce, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4But that's completely illogical. Imagine if they offered you a 10% raise; would you say "it's not that much"?
- gubbie, on 08/28/2008, -3/+7This comment is spot-on.
- Another (former) Target employee :) - laurarena, on 08/28/2008, -4/+7i work at another department store, and i agree. this person needs to quit bitching, buried, seriously.
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3People in all kinds of jobs make up stories. I was working guest services the other day and a guest tried to return some software that she couldn't get to work on her computer. She wasn't happy that she could only exchange it for the same software. I asked if she called the tech support for the software and she said she had. She said the tech support people told her to return it to the store. I told her that the person at tech support just told her whatever it took to get her off the phone.
/Wow, my writing style is crappy today. - draterrojam, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Pink is the new black and Target is the new Wal-Mart.
- STARTSOMETHING, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Have you worked retail? The person putting your ***** back up on the shelves. Had nothing to do with your 10 percent. Way to stick it to the man, man.
- triont, on 08/28/2008, -3/+6It wasn't the cashier's fault, why should they have to deal with it?
- cann3dheat, on 08/28/2008, -4/+7I used to actually like the Consumerist. They were a site that really showed you some of the seedier stuff that happens, especially in upper-management areas, where the average Joe normally doesn't have access. But lately, they've just become...one of "those people".
Any small gripe is a HUGE deal, even at low-level positions. Your coupon didn't work? Tough titty. Welcome to the real world where ***** doesn't always work the way it's supposed to. The occasional story of someone getting royally screwed over by a store when they were obviously in the right is fine by me, but don't blow your ***** horn to a website every time something doesn't go your way.
Bury me if you want to, but I try to live in the real world where this ***** just happens. - thehuntedpossum, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4They give us the CEO's contact info, why not Nancy's too?
- thehuntedpossum, on 08/28/2008, -1/+4Are you retarded? This isn't a program they have, it's a stupid consumerist article defending a single person.
Buried. - maley, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I also work @ Target! Wow lots of us here on Digg.
But this happened at our store earlier this summer, there was something wrong w/ the credit system and for a day it wasn't recognizing the 10% coupons and she must have gone that day. And this store probably wasn't informed yet. - Skunkhair, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3god i hate the consumerist
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3I don't know why you would get dugg down for saying this. Maybe people can't believe that there are people who work in the same position as them are *****...
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I like the news teases that are like "find out what common product in your house can kill you, tonight at 11" What if it kills me before then?
- kovac9478, on 08/28/2008, -5/+710% off is one of the most stupid ploys ive seen for a new credit card. Most ppl dont realize that it barely covers the tax and in fact opens the door for some to endure years of financial hardship at the hands of Home Depot, sears, target, etc. most of these cards also have HUGE apr rates...
that being said.... would you like to sign up? - tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2My favorite is "I will never shop here again" Sometimes I want to ask if they would promise.
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2No, it is spelled out pretty well that for every dollar you spend at Target or two dollars somewhere else (with Target Visa) you earn a point and every 1000 points you get 10% off a whole day's shopping. It is in the credit agreement that nobody ever reads before signing up.
- musicbear, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Well said ... and as is always the case from the consumerist, its only one side of the story. There's no telling what actually transpired there and just what kind of follow up was given. Did she go to the customer service area and ask for help? My best guess though... this is made up. Well maybe a kernel of truth to get back at target for something? Or it's a lie. She passed the coupon already, tried it again and they wouldn't make good for a squeaky wheel so here's the story on consumerist. Or, someone in her family used it when she didn't know. It happens. If you work in retail you know it happens a lot. Bottom line, it's the consumerist... take it with a grain of salt... and MAN UP!! 10% off for a credit card sign up? SUCKER!
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I think the stupidest ploy is giving away 2 liter cokes for signing up; they were doing this at K-mart the other day. Actually it is great for the company; a long time ago we did this at Target too. Just can't believe something so cheap can influence people's credit decisions.
- ccordero, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1classic consumerist story...bs
- orlyfactor, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I never take those offers. The last thing I need is another credit card, bad enough my current ones keep raising my limits.
- kovac9478, on 08/29/2008, -0/+1$10 item assuming 8% tax
Normal Price= 10.80
10% off $10= $9
$9+8% tax= 9.72 BUT most stores charge tax on the original price, not the discount.
$9.80= new price of item
you save 1 dollar. wow....
guess what... the APR is MORE THAN 10%.... so after one month, you are already paying back that discount unless you pay it off in full every month. and the discount is only on the first purchase. - itsradBrad, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I block it because I never, ever buy or subscribe to anything based on a web add.
I DO subscribe to Netflix, buy Adagio tea and have a Digg hat and tshirt. I did all that because I really like Diggnation and I wanted to support them.
PS Netflix is badass and I guess I subscribe because I like them but still, at least I used the Digg promo code. - x0f0x, on 08/28/2008, -4/+5I didn't realize a privileged 10% off for doing nothing but signing up for a credit card was worth bitching about, let alone negotiating and contacting the CEO'S of the company. ***** baby, deal with it.
- ryrocker, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1um....
its called interest and other misc. fees
=/ - Phrase, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1As a current GSA at Target, it makes me pretty sad to hear about her story. Who she needs to talk to is the Guest Service at the store where the coupon malfunctioned. Then the story needs to get straightened out and then if need be the work begins to look through her past purchases and whatnot. Details are so scarce really that it's hard to reccomend what to do.
>> This comment is written by me and has absolutely nothing to do with representing Target or any of their affiliates. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1no, i will blog about them.
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -3/+4the consumerist is like the wart on an ass
- inactive, on 08/28/2008, -1/+2dugg for being a woman, just so long as you give me head. otherwise, buried.
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1I had to digg you up for knowing that the combination of two 10% discounts was a 19% discount. Don't know how many times I have had to explain that to team leaders.
- tacojohn48, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Common sense at Target, we can't have none of that.
For the grammar Nazis out there, I meant to use double negatives. - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1Wow, I just read 'Speaker Nanci' in the description. I will have to stop reading the political section of Digg.
- AROERS, on 08/28/2008, -0/+1boo hoo,
