- agentsrecord, on 03/15/2009, -1/+111My criminal master plan has just been foiled. CURSES.
- inactive, on 03/15/2009, -1/+105This is going to hurt Hollywood screenwriters more than anyone else.
- Pseudorious, on 03/15/2009, -3/+99So we're left with the Cayman Islands, Bermuda, Antigua, Sark, Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco, Anguilla, Guernsey....
- str3ama, on 03/15/2009, -10/+86that sucks..now it's time to move all my money to the caymans:
Cayman Islands guy: [laughs] I'm sorry, but I cannot divulge
information about that customer's secret illegal
account.
[hangs up]
Oh, crap. I shouldn't have said he was a customer.
Oh, crap. I shouldn't have said it was a secret.
Oh, crap! I certainly shouldn't have said it was
illegal.
[sighs] It's too hot today. - HeDiggMe, on 03/15/2009, -4/+79Hello Liechtenstein
- shig, on 03/15/2009, -4/+79Super colliders, direct democracy, and their own currency?
- sturmgiest, on 03/15/2009, -0/+57cayman island banks are about to get a big boost
- ddr5, on 03/15/2009, -13/+69It's a sad day in banking....besides watches, chocolate and neutrality, what does the Swiss have, but cool banking policies?
- inactive, on 03/15/2009, -4/+58I'm sorry, I can't disclose any information about that customer's secret, illegal account.
Oh, crap. I shouldn't have said he was a customer... Oh, crap. I shouldn't have said it was a secret... Oh, crap! I *certainly* shouldn't have said it was illegal! - darkciti2, on 03/15/2009, -26/+72I think this will ultimately expose a lot of criminal activity. I don't think all Swiss accounts are invalid, but more transparency and better audit trails are a good thing.
- rrc7cz, on 03/15/2009, -10/+53I disagree; we simply have lost a source of financial anonymity. A direct parallel can be made with anonymous systems on the Internet: Freenet, Tor, etc. Absolutely they can be abused and used to break laws. At the same time, however, should you be shutting them down because the potential for abuse exists?
China would consider Freenet illegal because it breaks their national firewall. What about citizens who believe their finances are being immorally monitored or stolen from? Take your pick of countries (Zimbabwe, where you're forced to sell products at state-set rates, etc).
The same arguments that favor shutting down secret bank accounts can be applied to shutting down anonymity on the internet. Yes, you will catch criminals.. but at what price? - Rogor, on 03/15/2009, -3/+45Cuckoo clocks?
Swiss army knives? - Greenrascal, on 03/15/2009, -3/+40Nestle, Novartis, Rolex, ABB, UBS, Credit Suisse, Lindt and Swatch just to name a few, pretty impressive considering there is only 7 million people here. It also has the highest standard of living in the world. Clean air, great skiing, pretty girls, good beer, great great food. Educated populous, really loose pot laws and really good pot:) Central location with easy access to all major European cities, amazing Pay (Starbucks pays 18 dollars an hour here) and Panoramic views where ever you are, view from my place is the alps, Zuerich lake and the city and thats average. Come to Switzerland, You will love it
Im an American living in Zuerich and you couldnt pay enough to move back. - consonance, on 03/15/2009, -2/+38And you would've gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for those meddling countries.
- alextolman, on 03/15/2009, -0/+36Actually the Caribbean banks will begin to get squeezed as well as many of them are under the control of the USA and EU countries (British Virgin Islands, etc). Other popular havens such as the Isle of Man, Jersey, Liechtenstein, etc are all under the microscope right now for the same reason.
I think we will see a rise of offshore banking in the Middle East and Asia. - sjbdallas, on 03/15/2009, -1/+36Just as well since I only have $2.75 in there from the ponzi scheme I started at work a few years ago.
- odigity, on 03/15/2009, -3/+30Killing financial anonymity will not end crime, it will just reduce liberty. The big crime boys will still run the system for their own profit (you know.. the ones *in* government). This is not an attempt to make the world better, but rather an attempt by the big boys to monopolize crime, make it impossible for any small-timers to exist. It's just monopoly gangsterism. They're still making nearly a trillion a year off Iraq alone. The Federal Reserve scheme is orders of magnitude bigger than that, even.
The biggest victim is honest people who just don't want to be subject to the big mob's abuse and control. - bluehard, on 03/15/2009, -0/+26Damn before I could even get one.
- a3r0, on 03/15/2009, -3/+28Guys in funny clothes that guard the pope?
- cabdirazzaq, on 03/15/2009, -0/+24Poor Krusty.
- smacksaw, on 03/15/2009, -0/+24It's not like it was any sort of haven compared to other places like Panama and Cayman Islands anymore anyway.
This screws the average Swiss more than anyone else. I guess after hundreds of years, the Swiss are finally losing their way. Too bad. - manitoba98xp, on 03/15/2009, -1/+24Vatican City is a separate nation. It is _not_ part of Italy.
- inactive, on 03/15/2009, -0/+22Hot chicks :)
- videotape, on 03/15/2009, -1/+23Too hot today?
- nuketrap, on 03/15/2009, -0/+21Oh man I so wanted one even if I only put little bits of money in, I just wanted to say "I'll put it in my Swiss bank account"
- HeDiggMe, on 03/15/2009, -1/+21*****, thats what I get for commenting only on the headline. Hello Grand Cayman.
- ryanonfire, on 03/15/2009, -5/+23Hello: The Bahamas, British Virgin Isles, Dubai, Gibraltar, Channel Islands, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, or Isle of Man.
- Bobboq, on 03/15/2009, -1/+16Answer him damnit! My move depends on it.
- darkciti2, on 03/15/2009, -7/+22You've clearly never been there.
- whoreable, on 03/15/2009, -12/+27To the Swiss: Enjoy the rise in taxes, you smug *****.
- Pixelante, on 03/15/2009, -0/+15Actually a Swiss account is the last place you want to put your money in if you're about to be investigated, because a legal warrant is all that is needed to have your account scrutinized. The Swiss banking secret is mainly about not having your accounts spied into without a solid reason. The issue with some nations is that under Swiss laws putting your money in a foreign account in order to avoid taxes is not a penal crime. The issue with some other nations (namely limeyland) is that they don't want any competition for their failing financial business.
- kolobcreek, on 03/15/2009, -3/+18BYE BYE Swiss GDP
- sturmgiest, on 03/15/2009, -3/+17they make pretty fancy guns too
- localzuk, on 03/15/2009, -0/+14You can remove the Isle of Man from that, financial controls are very strict there, including transparency. They just have nice low taxes.
- IKORKYI, on 03/15/2009, -1/+14i don't know who told you that, but that is incorrect
- Ne007, on 03/15/2009, -1/+13The U.S. sucks. They want to tell other countries what to do and want to know everything that goes on with everyone in the world.
- ZeeZee2k, on 03/15/2009, -0/+12How much do they charge you for a coffee?
I can't afford it - whoreable, on 03/15/2009, -5/+16Actually I live in Florida. We pay no state income taxes here. If my state's tourism all the sudden ceased, I would expect all other states to say " Florida: Enjoy the rise in taxes, you smug *****"
- wily6, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12Good thing I have nothing to hide but damn dirty drug money.
- Elliuotatar, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12You know what someone should do is create some kind of secure facility where you can store anything, access it with a security code, and pay your yearly storage fee in cash. With no record of customer names, no money trail, and no keys that can be traced back to a specific locker, you could store your money and valuables there and nobody would ever be able to track them down. And since you could literally store anyhting there, and the owners wouldn't know what you're storing or even who's storing it, there'd be no way for the IRS or any blood sucking lawyers to go after it.
- dball48, on 03/15/2009, -1/+12He's got +18 / -0 ....You seem a bit slow.
