- ubernoggin, on 12/22/2009, -0/+49That's quite a Saab story.
- vault, on 12/22/2009, -2/+27I don't blame Swedes for being pissed. What awful timing GM has...imagine all these Swedish auto workers and all the companies that support Saab who won't know if they have a job right before the holidays.
- MacBookForMe, on 12/22/2009, -1/+10But I love Saab (95 or 93 Aero)
- MattRoss1968, on 12/22/2009, -2/+11I see what you did there.
- DrCraigis, on 12/23/2009, -1/+9Its been said before, but SAAB's decline began back when GM first bought their stake. Not to say that GM is wholly to blame, which is simplistic, but the current SAAB isn't really worth saving. Even most Swedes prefer other brands besides SAAB. Really a shame because they were awesome and unique vehicles, once upon a time. Not sure what exactly a company like Spyker would do with the brand; hate to say it but it would make better sense to just sell it to the Chinese, just like everything else. Of course, it's the workers who will get shafted no matter what the ultimate outcome.
- jbmcb, on 12/23/2009, -0/+8Saab Cars was sold off by Saab AB because it couldn't turn a profit. Why would Saab AB want it back?
- bobbknight, on 12/23/2009, -0/+6They tried to sell Saab, no one wants it, at least for what it's worth.
GM needs to get rid of red line entity's to pay the new Union Owners and the Feds. - exxon, on 12/23/2009, -0/+5Its against the law for the government in any EU state to subsidize business its anti competitive against other carmakers in EU and factories competing for the labour.
- Dou6, on 12/23/2009, -1/+5I don't understand why the government won't keep the doors open till a buyer can be found.
- Dou6, on 12/23/2009, -0/+3Saab is worth what someone will pay for it.
- jbmcb, on 12/23/2009, -1/+4> SAAB's decline began back when GM first bought their stake
Saab *never* turned a profit. The only way they stayed in business in Sweden was from tax incentives and heavy subsidization from it's parent company, a major defense contractor. GM made the mistake of thinking they could buy some Euro-cachet by buying a brand that was marginal to begin with.
Did Saab make good cars? Sure, but making good cars isn't enough - you have to make a profit as well. - lazyslacker, on 12/23/2009, -2/+5Saab makes great cars, it would be a shame if it died.
- moulinneuf, on 12/23/2009, -2/+4Nationnalize
look up what the buyer who bolted wanted, make deal with them. save the jobs. - jbmcb, on 12/23/2009, -0/+2Who would want to buy *any* car company right now?
- Raumschiff, on 12/23/2009, -0/+2Is that english for "Usch då"?
- Phyltre, on 12/23/2009, -1/+3I have trouble being shocked and don't understand how this might be surprising. Corporations don't have souls by definition--they shouldn't have as many rights as an actual person. Every day is a business day in some fashion or other, it's not like there's some kind of bizarro magic that happens during Christmas that makes bad business decisions a good idea. It's just that "good business" and "any shred of humanity" almost never line up.
- explodingzebras, on 12/23/2009, -1/+3*Saab made great cars
there, corrected it for you. - DerangedPenguin, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1General Motors and the UAW couldn't manage their way through a game of Monopoly OK I am not being really fair the UAW has done a great job of managing its fleet of private jets logging more hours than GM executives did. And the UAW as done well managing its executive golf course. And now that GM is under the guidance of the same bunch that manages AmTrak and the Post Office, GM can continue to piss the tax payers money away for decades.
The Swedish government should never have allowed the deal to go through in the first place, one look at GM's records should have warned them that they were about to bit into a plate full of luke warm Lutefisk. - tmonster1, on 12/23/2009, -1/+2I was gonna....you bastard!
- carlosos, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1@jbmcb, because they won't be as cheap in the future?
- bmiami69, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1I loved the looks of Saab in the late 80s and early 90's but they do suck when you are driving them.
- frontaxle, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1Uff da!
- Eurynom0s, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1Maybe because they turned it into another generic GM brand?
- bobbknight, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1LOL
- pimpstarz, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1I absolutely love my 2005 Saab 9-2X. Especially since it's been snowing for 2 days straight here in Quebec City!!
- frontaxle, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1My grandmother in Saskatchewan said it all the time. I think Uff Da is when you drop your gum. Usch da is when it is in a chicken coop.
- dhughes, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1 On the news it said GM dumped $25 billion into Saab since it became involved with the company and it still didn't make a profit, Saab seems to have died many years ago but nobody wanted to admit it until now.
- InactiveUser, on 12/23/2009, -1/+2SAAB went to ***** when GM started making the cars with GM engines and parts. They started to become a GM and not the wickedly cool cars they had a rep for being.
- Prosequi, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1It was in GM's best interests to move money away from SAAB and Sweden's higher tax burden to show profit elsewhere. Sweden and KPMG determined this a few months ago:
"Sources from within Saab have told automotorsport.se that GM has never been interested in reporting taxabale gains in Sweden. Revenues from US sales were never declared in Sweden, but rather went straight to GM."
http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/swedish-governmen ... - sdave007, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1Why not package Saab, Hummer, Pontiac and Saturn into one company. Offer it to the public, let the people decide the value, and let the shareholders nominate the corporate board???
- wayne247, on 12/23/2009, -0/+1Fun fact: Did you know you're actually driving a Subaru Impreza?
You probably are, but that fine 9-2X has nothing to do with Saab. - tsotha, on 12/23/2009, -0/+0The value of that new company would be less than zero. Nobody would buy the stock.
- Bondheli, on 12/24/2009, -1/+1I thought Koenigsegg had already bought Saab?
- drifter, on 12/23/2009, -3/+3The cars aren't that great if no one wants to buy the company.
- pimpstarz, on 12/23/2009, -0/+0Yes I know. I like it better than a Subaru though, because of the uniqueness... I've seen like only 3 others 9-2X in over a year, while I literally see hundreads of impreza each day on my commute.
I'm also glad it's an impreza, as this might help when itM's time to sell it, if Saab is out of business, there still is Subaru dealer! - ButterBuddha, on 12/23/2009, -3/+1Saab should be bought by Saab AB, the aerospace/defense company...
- Dou6, on 12/23/2009, -5/+1The EU, what a joke.
- seltaeb4, on 12/23/2009, -8/+1In before a bunch of of right-wing assmunches show up and blame the worker's union.
