- hashijouzu, on 10/22/2008, -0/+6Marketing guru, Seth Godin, had an interesting post on his blog recently. He mentions that a huge percentage of this year's Inc 500 were started in the months after 9/11.
Bottom line: Yeah, it's going to be really hard to get VC for a long time, but on the other hand you have a large population of talented and hungry people who are desperate to succeed. The big difference now is that the start-ups are going have to think very deeply upfront about how they plan to make money, and then go out and prove they can make reliable revenue even if it's on a smaller scale. With good concept and execution, we may end up seeing some really amazing companies grow out of this.
Honestly, I think this is a better approach than the "Hand a bagful of money to the next ex-Googler with a Comp Sci degree from Stanford that walks through the door" system that has been prevalent in the last few years.
Here's Godin's post:

The pressure will be on to actually making money from day one instead of hoping you make money eventually while being under the warm blanket of a venture capitalist.
- humanerror, on 10/22/2008, -0/+5I'm a denture capitalist.
going for the old people market - kgdoom, on 10/22/2008, -1/+6Of course. If it's hard to get a loan for a house, it's going to be hard to get a loan to run a business--any business. What part of economic crisis didn't you people understand?

- Haysoos, on 10/22/2008, -1/+3Yeah, cause things are going GREAT in the islamic world. I bet everyone on digg wished they lived in a place where they could get suicide bombed any day of the week...

Or not. - mythicflux, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2I once read this book a friend loaned me, had these words on the back: DON'T PANIC. I strongly recommend reading it.
- AlbinoRaven, on 10/28/2008, -0/+1Just thinking about this the other day.
As IT guys that came through the dot.bomb. We were shorted to death when it bombed. I'm still trying to figure out why the same bastards that slit IT's throat (banks) were given the special privilege of not getting shorted. I swear I lost on a couple hundred grand of cash because of it. - frequentFlyer, on 10/22/2008, -1/+2who let you out of your cave, hadji??!!
- Jexie, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1I'm Canadian you ***** moron. Looking at my profile would have showed you that.
- donnyg16, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1Decreasing funding for start-up companies will not last long because right now internet based companies are the fuel of our economy. They are creating tremendous opportunity for people to finally go independent and own their own business
- Haysoos, on 10/22/2008, -0/+1lol, so someone can make a blanket statement about other religions, but I can't make one.
You missed my point entirely. All religion ends in failure, none are the "solution". The solution is to keep your faith, get some morals, and stop spreading this "us against them" belief that right NOW is causing people to be suicide bombers. Everyone joining under one religion will happen only one way: force and genocide. The "solution" is to care more about the people in the world than what religion they follow. It's called tolerance and humility.
One note, I dont have a triple masters in religion, so hey, maybe theres a religion out that that is all good and doesn't promote "us against them". That type of religion doesn't end in fail, but it's still not going to be the solution. - AlbinoRaven, on 10/23/2008, -0/+1While in heart I would agree with the comment. Honestly, if you have a good idea it is possible to build it all by oneself. Never in the four businesses (IT businesses) started and sold have I ever taken a loan. That's the beautiful thing about computers is making a working, functional anything is pretty damn easy.
I can't even begin to think about "cloud" and how much money/time was wasted on larger fonts sizes based on popularity in a box. That's the sort of thing that gets developed. I've been pitched by young and hungry and typically I can only say a couple of things.
Bring it working and bring a business plan. Otherwise I'm really not interested in the next paradigm of whatever rank system is there. It's also good if you show up with customers under your belt to. I can understand expansion, I don't understand giving money away for something I (and I assume you) do in your spare time anyways. If you believe in what you are doing, take time off, go knock on doors. That's how business gets drummed up in the beginning, it's only after that people will actually start to phone you. - soso33, on 11/17/2008, -0/+0

It's a sign of maturity to realize that 90% of the people are morons.
It's a sign of wisdom to include yourself in those 90%.

The real Joe is no where near the ability to start his own business, he doesn't even have a plumbing license. Oh and he owes backed taxes.
