- numberneal, on 01/12/2008, -17/+203i think it's a mistake by both companies; who will honestly go to mcd's for a latte? and those stale breakfast sandwiches in starbucks look like they belong in madame tussauds wax museum.
- spudnic, on 01/12/2008, -11/+136McDonalds has the problem that it will never be cool, or a nice place to sit and enjoy a coffee.
They could sell the best coffee in the world, and people would still go to Starbucks.
Bright white lights, garish yellow and red colours, plastic seats, and screaming families of obese people? I'm not a fan of Starbucks, but I'd rather them to McDonalds every single time. - GiJoeBob, on 01/12/2008, -13/+104Now you can buy horrible coffee at TWO corporate chains! Hurray America!
- swagv, on 01/12/2008, -9/+85For two years I've said this retarded media comparison between McDonald's and Starbucks for "coffee supremacy" is about as relevant as a beauty contest between Joan Rivers and Courtney Love...
- Hellman109, on 01/12/2008, -4/+60We have that already in Australia (McCafe) and they do a pretty damn good coffee, beats allot of coffee places IMO.
The McCafe parts (they are generally a little seperate to the main service counter) also sell the normal cafe stuff, biscuts, cake, etc. - inactive, on 01/12/2008, -23/+67Fat Americans obsessed with filling their bodies with more crap.
- mbrindam, on 01/12/2008, -4/+43Actually, I've been to one of these McD's and they remodeled it very nicely.... definitely had more of a coffee bar feel than a mcdonalds feel. Was quite surreal, really.
- compupawn, on 01/12/2008, -3/+37Screw these corporations. Go to local / family owned places.
- hpymondays, on 01/12/2008, -0/+29Why would anyone visit the Starbucks or McDonald's websites?
- nfollmer, on 01/12/2008, -6/+34Well, McDonald's is about a half mile away from me, and Starbucks is 40+ miles. If McDonald's started selling better coffee, I'd go there. I think for this to work, it all depends on the stores locations to one another.
- m1a2c2kali, on 01/12/2008, -1/+27wow i didnt know that there was anywhere in the world let alone in the US without a starbucks around the corner
- Tarnum, on 01/12/2008, -2/+28Too strong? That's how the rest of the world drinks their coffee.
Only in American people drink tasteless brown water and call it coffee. - mbrindam, on 01/12/2008, -3/+28O RLY? How many personalities do we have?
- SteveKubrick, on 02/11/2008, -2/+25Screw them both! Support your local coffee joint or sandwich take away. The best coffee and sandwich's in the lakes come from a small independent deli. They put more effort into the food and service because their business is based on their reputation.
- betobeto, on 01/12/2008, -0/+19If what I've seen on my local -Costa Rican- McD's is any indication, the idea is to create two ambiances in McD restaurants: Typical McDonald's, and a McCafe, separated by decor and menu. This has been around for a while here. While it sounds kind of practical, the idea in real life sounds more like a disaster - specially when you see people with bratty kids passing from the restaurant to the cafe area with their Happy Meals, sodas and whatnot, ruining the whole experience -for me anyways. Fancy a double espresso reeking of fries and beef?
BTW, we have no Starbucks around. Yet. Which is probably a good thing. Indie coffee shops FTW. - KamikazeeDriver, on 01/12/2008, -4/+23I'm American, and I approve this message
- wattersm, on 01/12/2008, -6/+23Have you driven a Ford lately?
- Elliuotatar, on 01/12/2008, -5/+21I live in NH, and around here we don't have alot of Starbucks. Because of this, my experience with coffee house pastries has been Dunkin Donuts until recently when a Starbucks opened up on the local main street. There is simply no comparison. The coffee at Starbaucks is better, but the FOOD... my god, the stuff Starbucks makes is delicious. I have not had the breakfast sandwiches, but I have had one of the cold chicken sandwiches with some kind of dressing and cranberries and it was as good as the ones I get at fancy restaraunts. Fresh wheat bread, fresh cranberries, fresh lettuce and tomato. I have no idea how they do it, but the same thing goes for all their little cakes and things too. The blueberry coffee cake blew me away. Nice big tasty blueberries. Moist as the best bananna bread I've baked for myself. I can't even get pastries that good from my local supermarket bakery.
I know I sound like a shill for them now, but seriously, if you haven't tried the baked goods and sandwiches at this place because you're used to getting crap elsewhere, you shoudl give it a chance. I haven't had one thing there yet that I have not liked, even though I'm sure with each new thing I try there that it's going to be dry or tasteless like I get everywhere else somehow. But it never is.
Damn, now I really want one of those chicken sandwiches. So I'm gonna have to make a trip. Curse you Starbucks! - hollygolitely, on 01/12/2008, -3/+19So true, so true. But I just want to say that McDonalds and Starbucks are all over the world in large numbers, not just America.
But, we are still the fattest. - majortom1981, on 01/12/2008, -5/+21The starbucks breakfast sandwiches have been around for a while. They are actually pretty good.
- JasonMaloney101, on 01/12/2008, -3/+18Have you been in a remodeled McDonald's lately?
- amiches, on 01/12/2008, -4/+19Those sandwiches are actually pretty good - they don't sell you the ones in the cooler. Try the bacon avocado wrap...mmmm
- MortalynFlux, on 01/12/2008, -3/+17I've always regarded Starbucks as the McDonald's of coffe. The first Starbucks I went to was in Austin. I only went because I was meeting up with some friends there. I didn't understand why they would want to to there while there were several quaint, unique, bohemian, coffee shops within a short distance. Where the people serving you coffee could have a conversation with you on film directors, cool spots in town, and the latest up-and-coming band.
Starbucks is not a "faux living room." It's faux bohemia. And their coffee is horrible. Small selection, bitter and lacking flavor and subtlety. A mocca is NOT coffee mixed with cocoa. Mocca is a type of coffe that smells a little like cocoa.
I think people go there because they don't know better, not because they are "finicky coffee-orderers."
Here in Dallas we have Cafe Brazil and Central Market. There you will find good coffee. Not Starbucks. I never saw Starbucks and McDonalds as polar opposites. I would not be surprised if they merged. - cowsgonemadd3, on 01/12/2008, -0/+13Its more like starbucks vs panera bread.
- FuQboiroi, on 01/12/2008, -1/+14We have those here in Japan too. The sad thing is the coffee is better at McCafe then Starbucks
- veilrap, on 01/12/2008, -0/+12System is not broke. Learn how it works
- atbnet, on 01/12/2008, -1/+12This article is stupid and misses the main arguement. Read the one in the Wall Street Journal. The WSJ points out that Starbucks is faltering because people most people don't have time to sit in a cafe and would rather get their stuff and go. And to save time, these same people would rather only visit one place to get their coffee and breakfast/lunch/dinner. This is where McDonald's can capitalize. It may not be the cool est place to chill, but most people aren't chilling to begin. McDonalds can combine their existing full menu with an additional coffee service to take away more of Starbucks customers.
Plus recently Consumer Reports ranked McDonald's coffee above Starbucks. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/food/beverages/ ...
I still love my Mocha Frap from Starbucks, but if McDonalds can provide them cheaper I'm there. - pwnerofnoobs, on 01/12/2008, -0/+11siamese twins
- proliance, on 01/12/2008, -6/+16McDonald's already has better coffee (my opinion, yours may differ) so why not make the building itself a nicer place? Maybe for once I'll actually go in the place instead of always using the drive-thru.
- jetboyterp, on 01/12/2008, -6/+16McCappuccino !
- asauterChicago, on 01/12/2008, -1/+11I can't find the source on this, but I year ago I saw a 20/20 or Night Line episode on coffee places in America. The funny thing is, even people who said they hated the taste of Starbucks coffee, in blind taste tests, almost always picked Starbucks coffee as their favorite :-). I think it's more likely that people hate what Starbucks stands for (chain, big business, yuppies) than the actual taste of their coffee.
- skyteria, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10I'm not buying McD coffee unless it comes with a free ***** plastic toy!!!
- asauterChicago, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10I was in a remodeled McDonalds in London, of all places, last summer. It was crazy, it was like a high end lounge/night club. Chrome, mood lighting, big leather chairs, it was kind of disturbing... actually. It was weird eating a quarter pounder with cheese, leaning over a chrome table in a plush leather chair...
- smacksaw, on 01/12/2008, -2/+11Interestingly enough, McDonald's around here sells SBC - Seattle's Best Coffee. Owned by...Starbucks.
Had one tonight. It's excellent. Next to Tully's it's the best of the big coffee chain coffees we have. Charbucks is of course the worst. - KMartSheriff, on 01/12/2008, -0/+9Anyone? You mean the world?
- zydeco, on 01/12/2008, -1/+10McDonald's also has another advantage: the playlands. There's a McCafe test store near me, it's quite nice, and I see tons of moms drinking lattes and other coffee contraptions while watching their kids burn off steam on the playground equipment.

- converge, on 01/12/2008, -2/+10Do you live in Antarctica? There are like 40 Starbucks within a half mile of me.
- mediaspree, on 01/12/2008, -4/+12Do NOT speak against the McRib.
- hangtown2004, on 01/12/2008, -2/+10We have tried Starbucks Breakfast sandwichs and the are really good.
- po43292, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8Far from very healthy, but it's certainly classic.
- jcdigger, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7I can see where this is going...Starbuckdonalds! I can't wait to sink my teeth/straw into an Egg Mcmochafrappacino.
- brundlefly76, on 01/12/2008, -2/+9McDonalds does have another advantage - the drive-thru.
Very few Starbucks have drive-thrus. - NathanielJ, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8Seinfeldking apparently missed the other comments mentioning that what this article is talking about is already in place in many other parts of the world.
- dlown77, on 01/12/2008, -5/+12I wonder if all their (McDonald's) new drinks will be loaded with the same fresh ingredients as their regular coffee: sodium phosphate, sodium polyphosphate, Di-Acetyl Tartrate Ester of Monoglyceride, sodium stearoyl lactylate, tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium hexametaphosphate, sodium citrate, and carrageenan
- asauterChicago, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7I hope so, I love me some sodium hexametaphosphate.... hmmmm.... *drool*
- polarbobbear, on 01/12/2008, -0/+7We have them here in Germany too. It is actually good coffee and cheaper than starbucks. But im not sure that will work in the states.
- Treason, on 01/12/2008, -4/+11This man speaks the truth.
- sdigroup, on 01/12/2008, -3/+10Tim Horton's ftw
