- Lucas123, on 01/28/2009, -0/+68What! They're closing 300 stores? That only leaves 15,700 Starbucks. How am I ever going to find a cup of coffee now!
( But layoffs, no matter how small in comparison to a $10 billion company, really bite). - infamousjr, on 01/28/2009, -1/+50So instead of 3 Starbucks in a 1 mile radius only two?
- TheFlippin, on 01/28/2009, -1/+36Crazy, just over a year ago Starbucks was like the model business they were preaching to us about in my business classes- creating a strong brand, passionate customer base, global expansion, etc.
- FlyingCaveman, on 01/29/2009, -0/+31Most of the ***** you will learn in business school will turn out to be wrong.
Marketing theory does not equal economic reality. - WordsnCollision, on 01/28/2009, -3/+33Closing 300 stores? On what grounds? (bada boom)
- onClipEvent, on 01/29/2009, -0/+22Starbucks simply opened too many stores too quickly. The "strong brand" and the "customer base" gets heavily diluted when there's a store every couple of blocks, much like a neighbourhood corner store.
Their tactic of saturating an area with new stores (to kill off any competition), doesn't work in a slow economy, since they're just cannibalizing their own sales. - Bukowsky, on 01/28/2009, -2/+24Hopefully they'll close one of the two in Houston that are directly across the street from each other.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLxY640EFyg - AdamaObama, on 01/28/2009, -4/+25Their coffee tastes like twice burnt ass.
- richmomz, on 01/29/2009, -2/+22Who would have thought that people would quit paying 5 bucks for a cup of coffee in a severe recession? /s
- inactive, on 01/28/2009, -3/+23drink some nice folgers coffee
- boulderomen, on 01/28/2009, -2/+216,700 partners in 300 stores doesn't add up, a lot of these layoffs are part-time workers. Partners who are not AVAILABLE more than 75 hours per week.
Also, the problem does not lie in Starbucks business model, it's the luxury of coffee during a recession that is slowing down sales. - vinceislegend, on 01/29/2009, -0/+19In their defense, all 300 of those stores were on the same city block.
- sjbdallas, on 01/29/2009, -2/+20Start posting lolcats on digg.
- Bloake, on 01/29/2009, -0/+15Oversaturation = biting Starbucks in the ass...
- roebeet, on 01/29/2009, -0/+14It's a severe recession - this is really no surprise. If you're out of work or scraping pennies, Starbucks is going to be low on the priority list.
- Ravenlark, on 01/29/2009, -1/+14NOOOO! Now I'll have to walk THREE blocks to find a Starbucks!
- TwwIX, on 01/29/2009, -1/+14I never understood the fascination that people have with this *****. You're paying several of dollars for a cup of ***** coffee.
No wonder that people are losing houses. You need to get your priorities straight. - ihatediggcom, on 01/29/2009, -1/+13Starbucks is overrated, I'm sorry. It's true.
- L0NER, on 01/28/2009, -1/+11There are 4 starbucks in my mall. way too much.
But there is one in my downtown district. and I love it, lots of plugs for laptops, a fireplace, 50 cent refills and good people - FlyingCaveman, on 01/29/2009, -2/+11They've been on my ***** list for a while now. Say bulk coffee goes up $.10/lb they'll raise their prices $.10/cup. Now i'm sure I'm paying too much.
Grind your own beans, save money and time, and then go hang out someplace else. - hrdrck, on 01/29/2009, -0/+8Has it occurred to anyone that Starbucks don't have a marketable product? Has anyone who has drunk a Starbucks coffee actually ever drunk real coffee? Starbucks makes an unrecognisable, burnt black liquid that they call coffee, and perhaps the message is creeping through the coffee drinking community that what Starbucks sells is a very bad fake.
I hope so. I'd like to see them completely removed from the streets of the world. - Haoie, on 01/29/2009, -0/+8Just goes to show: Don't expand for the heck of it. The bubble always bursts sooner or later.
- Elohir, on 01/29/2009, -0/+8Good. Any business that refuses to use the terms small, medium and large doesn't deserve to stay in business.
- sangjmoon, on 01/29/2009, -1/+9I never understood how Starbucks succeeded in the first place with its ridiculously expensive coffee. But then, I'm a frugal spender and would just go to 7-Eleven or Dunkin Donuts if I needed buy coffee out. The success of Starbucks is probably the reflection of our silly societal spending habit like this Wall Street Journal article describes a family who made a combined $180,000 a year but still racked up a $25,000 credit card bill: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123319134864127065 ... . The economic downturn may be just us coming down from an abnormal high back to reality.
- yhan, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7On the other hand, they're opening lots of them across the atlantic here in sunny Portugal.
Except I haven't guessed yet how their 5+ euro coffes are going to compete with all those infinite cafes in every street corner selling 0.60 euro espressos. - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7you mean people go to Starbucks to buy *plain coffee" ?
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+7Manually making your own coffee is always better. Not saying I can't afford to buy coffee from Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts etc, (and I spend big bucks on food and electronic gadgets) but I never felt the urge to buy coffee from a coffee shops. They are just totally unnecessary. Just for once make your own coffee and see how much satisfaction you get. It doesn't take a long time if you got an electronic coffee maker and in the end you will end up saving a lot of money as well. Coffee shop business is totally unnecessary. I don't even know why people cared to start businesses such as this in the first place.
- ibeetle, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7Interestingly enough both McDonalds and Dunkin Donuts, as well as locally owned independent coffee shops all report sale increases and profit gains.
It may have something to do with offering cheaper coffee by as much as 60% over Starbucks and services like free WiFi, but thats just me. - m0n0kr0m3, on 01/29/2009, -0/+7I think the sbx upper management needs to take a 5% hit on their salaries until things turn around and maybe get rid of stupid drinks like the vivano until summer time. If they really want to save money. The rest is just a band aid at this point.
- fiatjustitia, on 01/29/2009, -1/+7Since when did anything having to do with Starbucks have anything to do with the whole Liberal vs. Conservative thing? Sweet Christ, you people see the culture war on fronts it can't even exist on!!!
- richmomz, on 01/29/2009, -2/+8That and the $5 price tag for a ***** cup of coffee.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6 Wish it would happen to Wall Mart....
- M3wThr33, on 01/29/2009, -0/+6And those are just the ones closing in downtown Seattle.
- Smuikas, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5Wait, their baked goods are tasty?
I prefer the coffee shop down the street.. they buy their muffins, scones, bagels, etc from local bakers in the neighborhood.. You can pay the higher price for fresh ones, or pay a lower price for the day old ones.
Either way, it's fresher than the ***** they sell you at starbucks.. - StarFingHipster, on 01/29/2009, -1/+6@wackyrepublican
You know I was going to crack on Starbucks, something a long the lines of "so that means only a Starbucks on every other block now?" But you sir, have forced me to delay that, and say this: The second half of your statement has some validity, but the first half shows only a deep rooted ignorance (read: homophobia) and generally undeserved and unnecessary air of general contempt to others common to to many republicans. Come back when you can intelligently uphold real conservative values like small government and low taxes. Until then, GTFO. - tinkafoo, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5Location (just spin around in circles, you'll see it)
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q& ... - sjbdallas, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5Sun burnt, oven burnt, or indian burnt?
- nonymous666, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5In other words, "don't try to be a coffee elitist because I've been one for over 10 years".
- Trocveth, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5I've been there, and Dugg for inevitable Lewis Black reference.
- inactive, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5Make Porn...
- Trocveth, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5And I can get a cup of plain coffee at a chick-fil-a for $0.39; and 90% of the time it will taste better than Starbucks.
- edjenkins234, on 01/29/2009, -0/+5i have a friend that works there and they throw them out or give them to the employees at the end of every night?
perhaps you should not post things like this - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -1/+6You hijacked the words right out of my mouth. 'Nuff said sir. If only they would understand!
I used to work for a millionaire electronic wholesaler businessman a while back. He never bought coffee, tea, lunch etc from outside and always encouraged me to do the same. He always brought lunch and breakfast from home and scolded me when I bought them from the restaurant downstairs. He was more like a mentor to me than boss. This guy owns three houses in Long Island, NY and two businesses.
I used to think of him as cheap and jaded when he used to teach me how not to overspend on stuff I can make manually by myself, but now I totally admit he taught me a set of valuable lessons of life. If only our average joes and janes would listen to people who are more elder and experienced in life than them! - skamper, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4I'm not sexually confused.
- edjenkins234, on 01/29/2009, -1/+5get jobs at the new dunking doughnuts
- sjbdallas, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4Nah, they'll just turn one into a Starbucks Express.
- drudometkin, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4I mainly go there when someone gives me a gift card that's it.
- pingudownunder, on 01/29/2009, -0/+4/echo that.
Starbucks closed two-thirds of all of their "stores" here in Australia earlier this year:
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,2 ...
which is fantastic news because their "coffee" tastes like crap. Not sure if us Australians are really the "discerning" coffee drinkers that we think we are (you can't beat the French and Italians for that) but if something tastes even worse than Fosters then we simply won't drink it. - teleporter, on 01/29/2009, -0/+3Well said. It's amazing that this time, nor the last time Starbucks announced mass closings, it was never mentioned anywhere what McDonald's was doing. If there is any company that can take business from Starbuck's, its McDonald's.
