- reflex768, on 05/02/2008, -1/+56To combat the trend, Starbucks is going to expand horizontally into the cosmetics industry. Hence my prescient and entirely intentional choice of an image. :-|
- quomen, on 05/02/2008, -1/+40I'm surprised that they don't even have free WiFi yet.. WTF? This isn't the year 2000... It seems like I can find an open wireless network anywhere BUT starbucks.
- jaytek13, on 05/02/2008, -2/+41Starbucks dug it's own grave. When they started, they were popular because they sold great coffee. The atmosphere also contributed to it's success. Due to pressure from stock holders, they decided to start selling a cheaper product for the same price, over expanded, and lost the friendly atmosphere turning into just another corporate machine. They went a completely different direction from which they started, trying to become the "McDonalds" of coffee, and obviously it didn't work out too well for them, especially now that McDonalds is now taking it's place as the fast food coffee provider.
But, the old President has stepped up and retaken his place as CEO and plans to bring Starbucks back to it's former glory. Will it succeed? Who knows. But he has already said that they are going to refocus on the things that made them such a success in the first place; great coffee and a friendly environment to drink it in. - RodgerE1, on 05/02/2008, -0/+34This must be due to piracy. They need to start suing people for making coffee at home.
- djm101, on 05/02/2008, -2/+35We're not going through a period in time in which people can afford to pay ridiculous prices for coffee, this doesn't surprise me one bit.
- brstilson, on 05/02/2008, -2/+28momsshizzle: "Hi there, I'd like a Venti Caramel Macchiato Chai Charger with extra whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles
starbucks: "That'll be $5.35"
momsshizzle: "Are you KIDDING me?! FIVE DOLLARS for a SIMPLE CUP OF COFFEE?!?!?!?" - 360news, on 05/02/2008, -4/+23I am not very surprised. I purchased a Starbucks Coffee recently, but I took it back because it was too weak. I got another coffee, but it was still one of the worst coffees I have ever had. How can they charge so much for poor coffee ?
- Chirp08, on 05/02/2008, -1/+18This blows my mind, every time I walk into a starbucks the ***** is packed. If you go to SF there are literally starbucks across the street from starbucks, and both will be packed. Obviously they need to control their spending because they sure as hell have enough people drinking their coffee to make money.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -6/+21First of all, I agree with someone above. It's not $5.00 for a coffee. It's $5.00 for a latte/mocha/white mocha, and that's if you get the largest one. Regular coffee tops at $2.00 and even the lattes are only $3.00 for a small one.
I was a Store Manager with Starbucks for three years, I left the company only six months ago. Yes, Starbucks has changed from what it used to be in the 1970's, and I don't think it's for the good. But we all know the real reason that Starbucks, along with many other businesses, sales are declining. It's the horrible economy that we're in. Why spend $2.00 on coffee or $4.00 on a latte when I can use that for my gas tank? Pretty soon you will have to make the choice between food for your kids or gas to get to work the next morning.
And what the hell is up with the image of lipstick? - inactive, on 05/02/2008, -3/+17In related "News", 21% of the population learned what mediocrity tastes like.
- brufleth, on 05/02/2008, -0/+14They can stay in business making crappy coffee because most people going there get milk, sugar, and syrup with perhaps some coffee flavoring or even a shot of espresso in there somewhere. Add enough sugar and flavoring to something and you can hide how much it sucks.
I've had similar experiences where I'll get a Starbucks coffee and it A) can't be consumed for two hours because it is just below boiling and B) tasted like absolute crap. I've purchased their bagged coffee beans at the grocery store before and it makes pretty good coffee. So the only reasonable explanation is that they suck at making it in their stores. - marx2k, on 05/02/2008, -2/+15But packed just means you have some douchebag buying a 'coffee beverage' and then sitting there for a few hours hoping someone notices his MacBook Air.
- Dylson, on 05/02/2008, -0/+12Oh no! They are going to have t put 4 on every corner to make up for this!
- brstilson, on 05/02/2008, -0/+11Bottled water costs more than gasoline. So does perfume, deoderant, cans of soda, and campbell's soup.
- momsshizzle, on 05/02/2008, -14/+25Who cares? $5 for a coffee?
- tgarza17, on 05/02/2008, -1/+11Check any list you can find of "X ways to save money", and every single one will have "Skip the morning latte - make your own coffee" on the list. Only now with gas prices going through the roof, people are starting to take those more seriously.
On a brighter note, here in San Antonio, Valero Corner Stores (like 7-11) give FREE coffee the next morning every time the Spurs win a playoff game. It's decent coffee, too. Go Spurs Go. - inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+10True, it's more vertical since Starbucks already peddles overpriced pretentious vanity goods.
- jetboyterp, on 05/02/2008, -2/+11They're blaming the housing market for drop in revenue? Ugh...Starbucks is a prime example of a company that got too big. But most of all, their coffee always tastes burnt, and it's way overpriced. For my money, Dunkin Donuts has the best coffee. Even McDonalds coffee beats out Starbucks. Starbucks is all about image..."Oh, look at me with my Starbucks half-caf, double-decaf latte-chino-esso with a half-carafe of half and half.
I like regular, unflavored, black coffee. Ordering that in a Starbucks, I actually get crazy looks. Stickin' with Dunkin Donuts on this one. - ICWeener, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9Starbucks coffee costs more than gasoline. Even the bad Starbucks. That might have something to do with it.
- minox, on 05/02/2008, -3/+12I can't believe it took people that long to realize that it tastes like *****.
- MrFurious2k, on 05/02/2008, -0/+9They've been devaluing their brand and over saturating the market. How can they be surprised about this when they've increased costs, reduced the quality of the coffee, and they're giving "elite sophisticates" less reasons to feel less "elite" and less "sophisticated." Now people can go to other coffee houses, pay less, and get a better product. Not good news for them.
- cheesey, on 05/02/2008, -7/+16Seriously man, stop with the cliche...it's not "$5 for a coffee." That statement would be correct if you said it's "$5 for a mocha/latte/macchiado/frappachino"
Regular coffee is anywhere from $1.60 - $2. - AndrewDB, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8Lets see, a gallon of gas, or a small (burnt tasting) coffee.
Hard to choose here. - DteK, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8well a gallon of gas cost just as much as a damn tall caramel macchiato. Do I need that cup of joe or an extra 35 miles in my tank?Im going with the gas and a 1.25 coffee from D&D
- bsmang, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8Looks like lipstick to me. First comment of the story explains.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8I think their small is a "tall." I don't care what happens to the Walmart of coffee.
- OwdenBowden, on 05/02/2008, -0/+8The fact is that you have people who cry about paying 4 dollars a gallon of gas but these very same people have no problem paying over $22.00 a gallon for Starbucks. Maybe the public finally woke up.
- jerrycan, on 05/02/2008, -3/+11I liked starbucks. when I used to travel to the US, it was the only place to consistantly get a half decent cup of coffee. (Coffee in the US, sucks)
- Asianwaste, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7Is it any coincidence that both McDonalds and Starbucks have a history of lowering quality to increase profitability?
- jbmcb, on 05/02/2008, -1/+8They say they're going to focus on great coffee - but now they're going to sell fruit smoothie drinks? Last time I went to a Starbucks it looks like they were getting rid of most of their sell-through garbage and had a better selection of coffee beans to buy, but they're still not focused on the coffee enough. I go to a local chain of coffee houses that hand-pull espressos, have actual coffee cups, and feel more like your living room than a McDonald's run cafe. That's the atomosphere Starbucks needs to recapture to be successful again.
- Dumbledorito, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7We've got this semi-trendy area with loads of foot traffic, and the Starbucks there actually went out of business. I can't remember ever seeing that before...
- footodors, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Then lower the prices! Duh!
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -2/+8For a long time they've got away with overcharging for what is just coffee. Now that the economy is down its businesses like this that are the first to feel it. Its entirely predictable, their whole business model is over-exposed to economic downturns.
It reminds me of Homer Simpson investing all his money in pumpkins just before Halloween and expecting share prices keep going up. - luseton, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6In another news, US residents finally realized that they have been played by Starbuck's for a cup of coffee that cost an average $0.30. Sales of coffee machine doubled in the last month.
- mik3pass, on 05/02/2008, -2/+8Hahahah!
Take that, you Yuppie bastards! - marx2k, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6I am. *sip*
- hdberk, on 05/02/2008, -4/+10What the hell is this thumbnail?
- orlyfactor, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6And this is why the stock market is *****, the stock is up almost 3% pre-market. WTF?!
- JQP123, on 05/02/2008, -2/+8Starbucks is caffeine for people who don't really like coffee and have too much time and money on their hands. Almost anyone can easily make a better cup of plain coffee than Starbucks.
- DeskFlyer, on 05/02/2008, -12/+18Because they know their customer base can afford Macs.
- nandasunu, on 05/02/2008, -2/+7why should fair trade = crappy taste?
- DickyT83, on 05/02/2008, -1/+6"Austin, it is *****."
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5As Starbucks expanded, they had a pretty aggressive policy of putting existing, independent coffee shops out of business. And the policy did not exactly just leave things up to the market either. So it's too bad about people losing jobs, since Starbucks does provide health insurance, which is laudable, but maybe they just created a lot of bad Karma in their youth, and it's coming back to bite them. To me they symbolize the growing depersonalization and yuppification of the world, as do book chains like Borders. They can all rot.
- inactive, on 05/02/2008, -3/+8this makes me happy....
- brstilson, on 05/02/2008, -1/+6well, the 'a' and the 'o' keys are only 7 keys apart.
- my10cent, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5You mean that boiling water with one bean McDonalds calls coffee?
- davewelsh79, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4BEE-EER?
- fr3ddie, on 05/02/2008, -7/+11HAW HAW, ***** COFFEE!
- interglenn, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4Careful, the beverage you're about to enjoy is extremely hot.
- ICWeener, on 05/02/2008, -1/+5But even perfume and deodorant taste better than Starbucks.
