- ThatOtherGirl, on 10/25/2007, -3/+1Several things on this list I haven't seen before.
- notthemama, on 10/25/2007, -1/+19But they are very weak items. They rub their necks when lying? Touch their noses? Speak slower and stumble over words? This is nervious behavior and GOOD liars don't do this stuff. The article is pretty useless and won't protect anyone from a halfway decent liar.
Of course, I could be lying.- jbird123, on 11/15/2007, -0/+1Your right, you could be. Let me see, did you rub your neck when typing that? C'mon now, be honest :P
- Bodhinature, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1You haven't seen them because they're *****.

- silverchrysalis, on 11/05/2007, -3/+21so- now when one of my customers says "i'll think about it and come back" while rubbing their neck- can i just scream "LIAR!!" and tackle them? Please?
- notthemama, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2Yes. And if anyone asks you who said you could, tell them it was me.
I'll deny it, of course. - cmpshotty, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1No, that's the job of Terry Tate!!!!
- alperea, on 10/25/2007, -0/+0yeah this is BS I rub my neck when I'm tired, sometimes when talking about the work I did. doesn't mean I'm lying. Or does it? (rubs neck)
- notthemama, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2Yes. And if anyone asks you who said you could, tell them it was me.

- CH3CH2OH, on 10/25/2007, -6/+9If you want practice at spotting a liar, there's a host of resources out there where you can see experienced liars at work. Here's one of my favourites:
http://www.youtube.com/user/RudyGiulianiHQ - goofporter, on 10/25/2007, -2/+8I trust no one, but I behave as if I naively believe everyone. "Don't worry about it, pay me when you can" is a phrase I use often.
Lucky me. My business is seasonal and usually repeat. Clients can easily screw me and go elsewhere, but elsewhere they get inferior service and higher prices so they generally come back.
I always forgive, but I never forget. I keep records so when a deadbeat client comes back I gently remind him/her that I haven't been paid for last year. I get paid for last year and this year and the world spins as it should. It's a bit of a drag to wait a year to get paid, but I lose few clients and am rarely screwed for more than a year.
I realize that not every biz can do this, but repeat business is better than getting the most money in the fastest, most efficient way and then losing the client.- LooseSeal, on 10/25/2007, -2/+4You sell drugs?
- mrsammercer, on 10/25/2007, -1/+5Yeah!! Time for the autumn crack rush.

- vondur, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Remember, its not a lie if you believe its true--George Costanza Seinfeld
- 11Heather, on 11/05/2007, -2/+7This stuff is served up from the 1970's - waaaay back when 'researchers' made anecdotal observations and made wild assumptions in isolation. Body language is one of many clues, and it's only pattern breaks that give a real and dependable indication. This stuff is dangerous as best, as these signals can mean so many things. Please do your own research and don't believe this rubbish.
- beeudoublez, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1"when 'researchers' made anecdotal observations and made wild assumptions in isolation."
Good thing we stopped this practice.
- beeudoublez, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1"when 'researchers' made anecdotal observations and made wild assumptions in isolation."
- Alphabet, on 10/25/2007, -2/+6this is a ***** stupid list. A good liar can lie to you without any hesitation or change in appearance. What's worse about this list is that you're bound to have false positives. The only decent way you can spot whether you should proceed with a deal or not is by finding out their previous history either from other clients, the Better Business Bureau, or even the internet. If all else fails, just have them sign an aggreement that it must be on time or penalties shall occur.
- sgtpppr, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1I agree 100%. Obviously, this list is meant to pick out budding liars or amateurs. Talk to a corporate sales person who has been in the business for 10 years or more. They would not have been doing it for that long without learning to be good at what they do. They know what questions you'll ask and all possible answers. Then it's more like reading through the same script over and over.
This list is like 'how to tell if someone is a bad actor' as opposed to 'how to tell if someone is a professional actor'. - yojiffyskippy, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1But unless you work in politics, most people you work with are not good liars.

- mphree, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4Yeah, I'm gonna have to call ***** on a lot of that. Neck Rub? Maybe I slept wrong, it doesnt mean I'm a liar. Rubbing my eyes? Maybe I just woke up an hour ago. Maybe your lights are taking some getting used to...
And handwriting? That whole idea is *****. I write terribly. Because over 90% of what I write is on a computer, my handwriting sucks. Even if I write a note to my mom and end it with "Love you" the O's are going to be scrunched up and not hallow. Doesnt mean I'm full of *****, it just means I fail at handwriting for the day.- BNash577, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3I think that maybe you are just a compulsive liar.
- mphree, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2Never...

- sdcarter, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3One of my best friends gave me some of the best advice when it comes to determining when people are lying.
"Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear."
It's a ***** way to live; but it works and it keeps things simple.- spiralspirit, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2http://www.answers.com/topic/believe-nothing-of-wh ...

- SnottsdaleAz, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Who actually handwrites a letter anymore??
- Bodhinature, on 10/25/2007, -4/+1What does the CIA know about lying? They've been torturing people for decades which causes false confessions. This guy is stupid. Besides, everyone has a different "tell."
- cmpshotty, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2They know plenty about lying, and their best methods for getting information is NOT torturing.
- jtmeyer, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1is your name really supposed to mean Campus Hotty?
- cmpshotty, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2They know plenty about lying, and their best methods for getting information is NOT torturing.
- ACityInOhio, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4I recently took a course in Organizational Behavior, and discovered that most of these are actually just urban myths, with no real basis in fact. There was, however, a guy who could detect a liar 98% of the time, through reading "facial microexpressions."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Ekman
My prof was one of his grad students, and apparently with two hours of training he can get your detection ability up to 70~80%. His grad students all were around 90~95%. As you can imagine, I was pretty damn careful what I said during class. - heystoopid, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1A perfect description of a resident chimp at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue Washington DC !

- blest, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1Very interesting article. I will have to keep my eyes open for these things.
- uttertosser, on 10/25/2007, -2/+1step 1 is the potential liars name George Walker Bush?
- dildoolielly, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1If people in the work place didn't lie, they would be out of a job. Same reason we have a paper economy.
- ichauffeur, on 10/27/2007, -0/+0some of the points importants are actually true. most people who are lying actually rub their noses and also do look up even if you aren't that tall.
- Chicken2nite, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1This reminds me of True Romance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIzHOfC0cMU - jeffselan, on 11/05/2007, -0/+0These things still hold true, not to the trained liar, but a co worker or man on the street kind of mind. Nothing like this is correct 100% of the time, but, they are good signs to watch for. It is all meant in the context of the conversation.
