- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -1/+20Recession is a bitch.
- Sheepsterbaby, on 01/23/2009, -2/+18Not really surprised by Sony, but by LG, yes.
Interesting. - Thorpe, on 01/23/2009, -3/+16PlayStation 3 took a big chunk out of that. Selling consoles at a loss still?
- TonyTheTerrible, on 01/23/2009, -2/+13The first thing to go are the overpriced toys
- DannyTMurphy, on 01/23/2009, -0/+11It really makes me wonder what will happen if this Recession lasts a few years or more. I invested in some extra ammo a few months ago just as a guess... and yep, can sell it for twice as much now.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/23/2009, -0/+10You mean you can't say that you're surprised.
- cubicledrone, on 01/23/2009, -3/+11It's starting to sound just a little too doomy and gloomy. The hyperbole is getting a bit thick. "Deep pain" and "brutal downturn?" That's called "piling it high and deep." It's *****, and it has the same fragrance as what most chicken-***** middle managers have been shoveling recently.
America would be in fine shape economically if we were designing and building and selling our own products. When you fire all the good, smart, productive people because you're too cheap-ass and immature to employ degreed professionals, you're firing your customers, jackass.
America would be in fine shape economically if some of the productivity gains had gone to the people who produced them. But they have ALL been pocketed by the irresponsible running sores that manage companies in this country. Wages have grown ZERO percent since 1972. That's 37 years of stagnant paychecks.
Personally, I don't give a ***** about the economy, because unlike the rat ***** liars who are too incompetent to do their jobs, my team has a running game. I don't spend all my time crying about "downturns." My team is busy moving the ***** chains. - FredFredrickson, on 01/23/2009, -1/+9They will be for years to come.
- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -2/+9LG should make better phones before it starts complaining about sales
- bnitro, on 01/23/2009, -1/+8I really wish Sony had bitten the bullet and dropped at least $50 bucks from the Ps3 price. This would have really given them a big push during the holidays. These are not good times.
- firext0l, on 01/23/2009, -2/+8They got their '10 year plan'.
Sadly(?), their plan sucked, and still does. - livet0ski, on 08/17/2009, -0/+5interesting microsoft wasn't included in the title...
- craftyguy, on 01/23/2009, -1/+6Oh! I know how to fix all problems with this industry! Throw money at it (bailouts)! Yea!
/sarcasm (<-- for those who support legislators and senators in the 2008 congress that supported the other bailouts, and thought I was serious) - Dumbledorito, on 01/23/2009, -2/+6People already have too much clutter and things they never used. Either they're getting rid of that stuff, or they're being content with what they have.
Further, those who could afford a new major purchase are waiting for prices to drop. Deflation is fun!
It's also bad timing for Sony. They just now realized that they overpriced their PS3 as compared to other consoles, and now that they're dropping the price even more, the market is going ice cold. - punkcat, on 01/23/2009, -0/+4he can't say.
- droogieboy, on 01/23/2009, -1/+5 The first thing to go is the toys.
- YumYumTruck, on 01/23/2009, -2/+5the economy sucks :(
- LethalGeek, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060219-6216 ... $800+, I remembering hearing the $958 dollar amount at the time too.
They were banking on their name and didn't stop to consider how their equipment traditionally being the least powerful of each generation and therefor being able to do pricecuts at will being a bit part of why they were selling so many. Whoops. - briLo, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3People are starting to realize that we've been living way above our means for quite some time and we're learning a word that our grand parents and great grand parents knew all to well; frugal.
We didn't experience the ***** they went through but unfortunately we're going to get the opportunity to go through the trials and tribulations that they got to experience! - sadilak, on 01/23/2009, -1/+4I think every electronics company will be hit hard especially televisions as buying $1500 46 inch televisions does not make sense anymore. Same goes for Blu ray and Gaming and Washing machines and Refrigerators and Ovens etc etc.
On the other hand, I am sure that these jerks can reduce the price by half and still make a profit but only if they stop being greedy pigs. - psychohog, on 01/23/2009, -0/+3"the PS3 on the other hand cost $958 to make a single unit"
[citation needed] - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -1/+4I could understand Sony's issue, but LG is a top manufacturer in necessary electronics and such. This might be leading to signs of internal issues rather than sales.
- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2They make great TV's though.
- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Mad Max 4 will become a reality TV show.
- Elranzer, on 01/23/2009, -1/+3They do make good phones. It's just, if you bought them from Verizon, you wouldn't know it.
- macmcraeart, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah - Lession 1: $200 internet devices are what people want. Not $2000 ultra thin macbooks.
- HCviolence, on 01/23/2009, -0/+2Yeah it was in the article after all.
- ronaldinho, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1People should have seen it coming sooner. I mean, no one is going to buy high-priced ***** these days. Either you are broke and need to rein in previously crazy spending, or those that still have money are waiting for more deflation. Note to companies: everything overpriced will not be bought, so PLEASE LOWER THE PRICES!!
- dandonia, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1LG just went through a boom, this is the back end of that for them. Huge TV's are not something people buy on a regular basis.
- KingHarvest00, on 01/24/2009, -0/+1i played lbp and i was far from hooked.
- inactive, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2My Nokia E71 > All your base
- MacroDaemon, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2Seems like we're going to have a proper fun 2009.
- KampfGherkin, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2Apple's Q1 profits are up 58% though. Clearly they're offering something that others aren't and can continue to demand a premium for their items as such.
There's a lesson in there somewhere. - dandonia, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1Not really as bad though and we can have a much more enjoyable life these days to ride it out. More over, this is just the end of a boom period and the market will sort itself out again in a couple of years. This was one of those times where it needed to crash in order to let new buyers back in.
- bratterscain, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1And all that is inspired also by cheap-ass consumers yet those same consumers want high pay equal to everyone elses. It just doesn't work.
- omgwtflawl, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1I found a picture of cubicledrone here:

/scarcasm - BinaryDelt, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2Agree. Market share will eventually lead to profit. They really have a great product in the PS3, it just costs too much for the average gamer. Plus, the marketing for the PS3 has been TERRIBLE. Show a commercial of people playing LittleBigPlanet or Metal Gear Solid 4 or one of the other great games and having fun.. That's it. It's easy.
- diggrim, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1not always http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?st ...
- KampfGherkin, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1"Personally, I don't give a ***** about the economy, because unlike the rat ***** liars who are too incompetent to do their jobs, my team has a running game. I don't spend all my time crying about "downturns." My team is busy moving the ***** chains. "
Dugg for the ballsy/*****-git 'er done-attitude. - inactive, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1LG got hit Because of falling HDTV demand.
- superterrorizer, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2That's so true. The original marketing campaign was so arrogant, I literally laughed out loud when I saw it. There's a lot of great games out for it as well. Just let someone play Resistance 2, LBP, or Uncharted, and they're hooked. It's a shame Sony chose to go the route they did with PS3. I love my PS3 though, and I play it much, much more than any of my other systems sans my PC. I hope sony takes their heads out of their asses and gets busy on a solution to their woes.
- diggrim, on 01/23/2009, -1/+2not really, many companies are just re-arranging the books to claim losses (and fire a bunch of workers) so that next year's books look awesome and they give each other bonuses. No body would blame management with how "bad the economy" is.
- bigtoes, on 01/23/2009, -0/+1DUGG!!! Use the word stunned when they start selling insulin & gas .
- briLo, on 01/23/2009, -0/+0I do believe there was a lot of discussion over Microsofts laying off of some 5,000 employees, just not on the comment section of an article on Sony and LG.
There has been quite a few problems with the PS3 which has not helped Sonys profit lines (Blue Ray problems, the PS3 40gb problems, lots of dead units).
I'm not quire sure where you came up with 'over priced', however it does seem odd that MS was able to take a cost hit on every 360 sold but Sony cannot. What does that tell you? It tells me that the profit margins are not there in the other areas that once carried Sony (Music, Movie, Cameras, Phones, Notebooks, Audio hardware). - Elranzer, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1Sony losing profits? Oh no! Blame it on the consumers!
- mammamiaisme, on 01/23/2009, -0/+0I was sitting in a coffee shop trying to have a quiet drink when a man sat down at a table next to mine and proceeded to chat about world events. When he introduced himself as a financial advisor I braced myself for the inevitable pitch. And certain as death and taxes he glibly told me that personal basics such as electronic were actually becoming more affordable.
I asked him what he considered personal basics and he replied "You know phones, entertainment electronics, and the like"
"You are ***** me" I scoffed " What planet are you from where THINGS like electronics are suddenly more basic than food and shelter! Which the blind and stupid like yourself might want to know, are casting most of us into wage slave rolls and working poor status"
He sat starring apparently unable to determine or comprehend what went so wrong with his pitch
No Sale I am saving my money honey - mammamiaisme, on 01/23/2009, -0/+0true that
- macmcraeart, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1"dire profit warnings" why do knuckleheads use that phrase? Nobody talks like that. Well maybe william f buckley did - but he was a douche.
- Elranzer, on 01/23/2009, -1/+1Rich idiots aren't affected by the recession, yet.
