- Lalaki, on 10/27/2009, -2/+39It looks like they just figured salary and not cost of living. This is stupid.
- idavidtang, on 10/27/2009, -0/+20It does not include other factors such as CPI which will make the chart more accurate because even with a salary increase, if the price of goods is more expensive then there isn't really any real change.
- Liam000, on 10/27/2009, -1/+20Where can I move so I don't have to compete academically with east asians? they're like 3% of the population and 40% of grad school students.
- arbysrocks, on 10/27/2009, -6/+25i'd rather make less and not live in the sticks
- bbhill, on 10/27/2009, -1/+19who comes up with these ***** color schemes?
- acroyear2, on 10/27/2009, -0/+16The sticks.
- mr_ziy, on 10/27/2009, -0/+13Wish they made one of these for the whole world >_>
- smashTasker, on 10/27/2009, -4/+15Hmm, get paid less or move to the south. I guess it is off to Canada for me!
- NoLibertarians, on 10/27/2009, -1/+12I've worked for companies all over the US without moving. The best of both worlds is living in a low cost of living area and working for a company that is headquartered in a high pay area. They generally pay on the scale of what is paid in their home office region. Why not have it both ways? But I buried this because the assumptions and conclusions here are way off base
- DiggerLater, on 10/27/2009, -0/+9New Mexico looks like a winner, until you remember that the average salary here is like $2.50.
- theartfuldodgr, on 10/27/2009, -2/+10I'm pretty sure San Antonio has a cheaper cost of living versus LA.
- Ghostalker, on 10/27/2009, -4/+12Alabama - 0%
Gotta have jobs before you can have statistics about them. - ZombieSociety, on 10/27/2009, -0/+7Really? Because it kind of says "salary change" about 84 times.
- googooly, on 10/27/2009, -3/+9http://xahlee.org/Periodic_dosage_dir/lanci/canada ...
We welcome you.

Lemme make the joke easier on you. I know math is hard, but I'll put it in real world terms.
There are zero new messages in my inbox. If in 1 hour there are zero new messages in said inbox, then it can be recorded as a 0% change.
The joke was Alabama had no jobs, thus nobody is recording salaries going up/down, as nobody is receiving a salary. - acroyear2, on 10/27/2009, -3/+9Agreed.
- TatsuTerror, on 10/27/2009, -0/+6I should consider moving states based on data collected between Q4 2008 and Q1 2009? Fat chance.
- Dougman82, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5So you're saying I should move to Hawaii?
- scamper22, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6we're everywhere.
You can't even flee to North Dakato. Whereever there is a gas station, we have a man on the case. And his children will go to grad school. - ell0bo, on 10/27/2009, -3/+8I'd take the south. Women are better down there then up north. Granted you have to live near a lot of idiots, but you can always move back after you've made some money and found a decent woman.
- stburke, on 10/27/2009, -0/+5I'm a bit surprised at the salary change (-2.6%) in North Dakota, who has not seen nearly the economic downturn that the rest of the country has seen. What perplexed me more is that Grand Forks, ND had the 9th highest salary increase. Is there fallout on the western part of the state that's not on the eastern? Wait...I'll stop since I'm pretty sure I'm the only Digger from ND.
- pensivewombat, on 10/27/2009, -1/+6The joke there was that the change in salary is 0% because nobody has a job. Hell, that's why I got out of there.
- ELiTe185, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4So basically, we all should move to Hawaii? I could have told you that!
- TatsuTerror, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4It wouldn't be pretty...
- somepuertorican, on 10/27/2009, -1/+5Damn I need to move to this East cost!
- taylorhempel, on 10/27/2009, -0/+4You are not alone, and I thought the same thing as you. Things seem fine (normal) in Fargo. Though big companies like Bobcat are cutting a lot of jobs, maybe salaries are getting cut along with them.
Take our state's population into account as well. 100,000 salaries getting cut here is going to move the number a lot more than it would in say NY or CA. - Lalaki, on 10/27/2009, -1/+5@ Got Banned Again
I did not say that West Virginia has a comparable cost of living to California. What gave you the impression that I said this?
I was born in and currently live in the northeastern US. Do some basic research on the cost of living and median salaries of any metro in the DC to Boston corridor, then compare it to a metro like St Louis. The difference in pay isn't that much, but the difference in the cost of living between these areas is enormous. - rugabug, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Actually, he moved back to Dallas.
- mkellogg999, on 10/27/2009, -6/+9This is misleading. It is representing CHANGE in salary - not actual salary.
- c3rb85, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3Theres no depends about it LA is expensive. I live in the San Fernando Valley and I pay $800 a month for my half of rent (for a 2 bed 2 bath). I was looking at getting a 1 bedroom or studio when my last roommate got married and I figured I could do $1,000 a month and all I could find were ghetto apartments in Van Nuys. I don't live in an upscale apartment building but I also don't live in a ***** building.
As well I have a friend that has an apartment in Hermosa Beach that's a 1 bedroom with a loft that he shares. The total rent for the place is about $2700 (from what I remember him telling me). As the same as my place it isn't upscale the only really great part about it is the balcony faces the ocean and its a block from the ocean.
I have friends that live in San Antonio and live in pretty nice apartments, pretty much same level as mine and pay about $400 a month for a 1 bedroom.
Cost of living is a huge factor - metalhead3767, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3I'd like to see the change in my home state of Rhode Island but its covered up with a white dot indicating what state it is.
- acroyear2, on 10/27/2009, -1/+4It depends.
- LiquidIse, on 10/27/2009, -1/+4Ah yes. Red is good and blue is bad. nice.
- theCoffee, on 10/28/2009, -0/+2Yeah what else could it be?
- gotbannedagain, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3Oh come on - you're really telling me that West Virginia has a comparable living cost to California? Not even. It's not stupid, because salary amount is typically adjusted based on cost of living in the area. I mean, seriously, that's common sense. Why would you go somewhere to work when you can't afford rent?
- diggydougie, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3Need overlay with industry. What good is it living in a high salary area if your skills only get you a job as a fry cook or a maid?
- Lalaki, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2@ Penis Wombat
Salaries are actually dropping in many of the low cost of living States, and the State with the highest increase in salaries is also one with a ridiculously high cost of living. I suggest that you re-examine this graphic. - Maelok, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2But you can't blame the title for being inaccurate.
- Lalaki, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3@ Got Banned Again
You're making no sense. My scope includes every state and not just whatever states might make this stupid graphic look the slightest bit useful. Unlike you, I do not like to cherry pick information. Besides, even when you just include the states that you have cherry picked we are still not sure what the cost of living is or where the salaries even started. This graphic really is completely useless. - ruckus49, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2THE SOUTH WILL RISE AGAIN!!!
- Lalaki, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3@ Got Banned Again
There are numerous reasons why someone lives where they do. Salary and cost of living aren't the only factors that most people consider when determining where they wind up living their adult lives.
Regarding your second paragraph, I fail to see how you've reached this conclusion about what I believe. Please explain yourself. - linagee, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Salary growth is largest around states bordering DC? No way.... </sarcasm>
- gotbannedagain, on 10/27/2009, -1/+3@mono - Then prove otherwise.
- mrgreg, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Grand Forks here too, dude!
- lindsayjc, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Dakota*
- tnvwboy, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2TN has great wages, but be prepared to run the rat race to get them.
- Elranzer, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Clearly PENIS started by PENIS is PENIS working for PENIS!
Wait, isn't that how MadLibs work? - freonchill, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1what about "cost of living" increases?
- MacBandit, on 10/27/2009, -2/+3Well that's fine with me more of the, "sticks," for me.
