- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+63Hmm. There are many, many, days where I buy absolutely nothing. In fact, those days are the majority of my existence. I guess this isn't aimed at me.
- whataboutdave, on 11/02/2007, -2/+32So let me get this straight: We are supposed to stock up on things ahead of time so that we don't have to buy anything on a given day? We would still consume as much and do so less efficiently. Its not like participants are going off the grid - they are just changing when they buy things they usually buy.
- chugger1992, on 11/02/2007, -1/+26tomorrow: buy twice as much day!
- konklarii, on 11/02/2007, -0/+17How about Shop at a Locally Owned Store Day? They could use your cash!
- meruru, on 10/25/2007, -2/+16What is the point?
- sammyc53, on 10/25/2007, -0/+12You should go to the MSN My Money Forums. People there partake in 'Buy Nothing' MONTHS. Obviously, the necessities need to be bought, and the bills need to be paid, but at the end of the month it's amazing the dept you can eliminate, or the 401K contribution that can be made. And when you look back - you really didn't miss out on anything. Life goes on...
It's great. - mywhitenoise, on 10/25/2007, -1/+10and by stocking up, they'd probably spend more on ***** they don't need for the next day.
- jamie06260, on 11/02/2007, -2/+11This doesn't seem to make sense.... Or about as much sense as the whole "Don't buy gas on [insert date here]
I doubt that it will really help anything... - jiqiren, on 11/02/2007, -2/+8I hope this catches on... shorter lines when I go shopping Nov 24th!
- fnaqzna, on 10/25/2007, -1/+7Exactly. I think 75% of my days are no-buy days.
Sounds like a silly idea to me. Impact to retailers will be minimal at best. - Bdog2g2, on 10/25/2007, -0/+6don't worry, the tax cuts are doing that for us....so they say. I mean the White House wouldn't lie to us, would they?
- mywhitenoise, on 11/02/2007, -1/+6November 24th, eh? The second day in the After Thanksgiving sales? Sounds like these people just want less competition.
- SquigglyP, on 10/25/2007, -0/+5It's pretty ***** sad that people actually need to have a day like that set before them before they will stop throwing their money away on stupid *****. It's true that 10% of the people own 80% of the wealth, but that's not really accurate. What's really going on here is 90% of the people are giving 10% of the people all their ***** money for stupid trinkets and ***** they don't need. Then the 90% of people demand that the 10% spread the wealth. ***** hilarious and hypocritical.
- aliengoods, on 10/25/2007, -1/+6Also, this is aimed at the post-Thanksgiving shoppers. Good luck trying to stop a woman when something is 'On Sale'!
- shortarabguy, on 11/02/2007, -2/+7Is the creator of this idea perpetually high or just an immense douche bag? What rational human being would not go buy stuff, if only gifts, on Black Friday?
- NJPENSO, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4ok, maddox
- vsujohn2, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4That would probably happen to be the day you run out of toilet paper
- dafragsta, on 10/25/2007, -0/+4That would be less of an empty gesture than "Buy Nothing Day." I'd wager that at least one day every two weeks I buy absolutely nothing.
- aliengoods, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3It pisses off Tyler Durden.
- handsoffme, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3Did posting that make you feel good?
- joot2112, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3I think it's to promote the idea that life is more than consumerism and material accumulation. Reflect and appreciate what is truly important to you. If Black Friday is "go out and buy things so you can give them to people in December to show you love them", then Saturday will be "hug your kids/mate/cat/dog, call your parents/friends, go for a walk in the park, etc".
- TheAssMan, on 10/24/2007, -0/+3you are the economies bitch!
- graphak, on 10/25/2007, -1/+4be a man, take a stand
- teh_techie, on 10/25/2007, -0/+3no, probably means what was said...
- Ellipsys, on 11/01/2007, -0/+3Do you work for ConAgra? Wal-Mart? Pathetic. I buy local, organic groceries whenever possible, as do many others who are sick of the production methods of factory farming these days.
- NoobieDoobieDo, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2I've been buying nothing for a while now.
Now go back to your jobs so you can earn more money to buy crap you don't need. Then in 6 months a new version of the same crap will come out and you can rush out and buy that also. - itschop, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3This is ***** lame.
- beautification, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2Buy Nothing Day is another day where people with money show others that they have money by choosing not to spend that money. I'm so sick of all these "liberal" well to do do-gooders. Instead of a Buy Nothing Day we should be promoting a Steal Something Day, where the poor and lower classes are also able to participate. If you are protesting the capitalist system it doesn't make sense to do so by showing your economic standing by choosing not to buy something - you should be stealing it
- Gimpishi, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2How about buy only from local the manufacturers this holiday season. Put some though into the gifts you buy and don't just go walking around department stores and malls throwing money at a meaningless item. That would seem more effective, or at least more fulfilling, than just buying nothing on one day, and buying double the next.
- jumisko, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2I'm in the same boat as you - I go about a week without buying stuff - because I do my marketing weekly. It is clearly aimed at the mainstream consumer. I also like what Sammyc53 said about trying it on a monthly basis - I'll bet even I could save some dough doing that!
- joot2112, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3I'm glad it's a Saturday. You could really ***** up the stock market with even a rumor about this.
- KOSmurfy, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2"From "what's the point?" you extrapolate that the person you replied to buys a lot of useless ***** and is apathetic"
Well, I guess you do if you're an idiot. When did buying anything turn into buying "a lot of useless *****?" - tehxen3, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2You socialist ***** who support this make me sick. I'll buy ***** whenever I feel like it, guess I'll buy 3 times things as usual on this day.
- DavidYeah, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3In a culture where shopping is a social past time, I think people could use a day off.
- Clp727, on 10/28/2007, -0/+2In the current economy I am privileged enough to encounter several "Buy Nothing Days".
- Hosalabad, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2This is stupid beyond recognition. It's like a gas out. Don't buy gas tuesday, stick it to the man! Except that everyone who 'participates' will just fill up on monday/wednesday. Changing the purchase date doesn't do anything if you don't cut the consumption out.
- inactive, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2This idea was started by someone who wants to get all the best sale items without having to fight the crowds. Black Friday is big, but so is the whole weekend, since many people still work the day after Thanksgiving
- urbandistrict, on 10/27/2007, -0/+2This is foolish...thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather "Live as you would any other day" 2007
- sequethin, on 10/25/2007, -0/+2adbusters has beeing promoting buy nothing day for a while now. I think it's a good idea to point out that so many people are conditioned to buy things. It's sort of like the movie They Live - you put on the magic glasses and see that the ads really say CONSUME and OBEY. it's worth trying to see if you can do it. if you find yourself thinking omg I need to buy I need to BUY I NEED TO BUY!!!! maybe you have a problem?
- Christ0s, on 10/25/2007, -1/+3Its people like you that are destroying the economy start spending all you desposible income on useless stuff right now.
- doctorbasic, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1http://www.amazon.com/Not-Buying-Year-Without-Shop ...
- heybitch, on 10/28/2007, -0/+1Whats better: "Buy less in general for the rest of your life" day
- HanSolo69, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1i don't know about you, but having the time/money to go shopping is somewhat of a luxury to me and most of the people i know.
- alternateheaven, on 11/21/2008, -0/+1Ill take freedom over your communist alternative any day of the week. If you abhor the capitalist countries so much I suggest moving to the starving nation of North Korea and bask in some of that Juche goodness you would no doubt claim to be paradise.
- jf518, on 10/27/2007, -0/+1I am not sure who this is targeting, but it sure isn't me. The exception for me is when I do buy something; i only buy food on a daily basis, and I am not going to not eat for 24 hours so...
- shinelikeitdoes, on 10/25/2007, -1/+2seriously the stupidest thing ever.
- HanSolo69, on 10/25/2007, -0/+1huh. that seems to go against my reasons for choosing to live in a capitalistic nation. i don't get it.
- doctorbasic, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1Stocking up? This is aimed at "Black Friday". The day after Thanksgiving when most every American starts their holiday gift shopping. It is one of the two biggest days in the retail industry. What retail items could you possible have to stock up on? My interpretation and understanding of BND is to realize how much our lives revolves around buying things. It is an anti-consumer movement. Plus so much more. The day after thanksgiving will head massive profits for many industries. Food, oil, ect. anything people will be buying on their big day out. Think of how much fuel will be bought that day. How man cars will be driving around. The parking lots of the malls will be filled. Much fuel will be emitted into the air. If you've taken a environmental science class you'll probably conclude the results on your own. Of course this is all long term effects. People here are addicted to shopping. QUIT buying useless *****. Fight Club
- dnafrequency, on 11/02/2007, -0/+1You sheeple are pathetic. You have all been trained so well, to shop, shop, shop, just little capitalist pigs. Oink! Oink! And the saddest part of it all, is you are so brainwashed that you are absolutely horrified at the thought of going one day without shopping! Beam me up, Scotty, I can't take it anymore.
- doctorbasic, on 11/08/2007, -0/+1If you love shinny things, BND is not for you.
